@M G I am the same I found a position to be relatively without pain. Lying on the pain free side with pillows propped up under the pelvis. May I also suggest you get a wheatbag or two. Much better and softer against a sore butt, the a rubber hotwater bottle. Hotwater bottles are too harsh! All corderoy wheatbags are the best! They caress better! As soon as I am starting to cramp up with lots of pan, I retreat back to my bed. One wheatbag on my sore ankle, one on my hip. The heat helps to stop the cramping. It takes 6 weeks? Wow! I am 3 weeks in and it is getting somehow better. At least, I do not have to fear the 1st toilet run anymore!. Trying to sit on a cold toilet seat, crippled with pain! (Horrible situation!!!) I even warmed the seat, which helped. But this horrible cold wind is making it worse again! Stay out of the cold! The other thing that also helped with the pain was Ibuproven tablets, against the inflammation! But only take them in absolute need. Same with panadol, it gives a break from pain! The clamp exercise helped me. Both versions! And lying on my stomach, with elbow arch for 10 minutes. PAIN IS SO EXHAUSTING!
Great video! However I have tenderness in the piriformes and pain in the sacral area when I slouch😫 I would consider myself an athlete but my sciatica seems to be getting worse.
After the CT myleogram--I do have and HAVE had sciatica ( nerve root compression and disc issues--THO there are many people who have disc degeneration without any pain at all.) BUT also have the secondary, the piriformis pain in the bumm. BOTH issues are far less problem than the reversal of my necks curve and more nerve root compression as well as narrowing of the space in my spine. The mid back pain? Is really rough. Makes it difficult to even take a deep breath.
No pain down the back of my leg but extreme stiffness first thing in morning or sitting in one place for too long. Hips ache, underneath shoulder blades stabbing, sharp and aching pain. I just saw a chiropractor for several weeks and I'm worse now.
Appreciate Video! Excuse me for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard about - Parlandealey Leaving Pain Process (just google it)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for learning how to cure Sciatica minus the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my cousin after many years got cool success with it.
I’ve got it as well and it wakes me up at night too but I’ve noticed that yoga stretches help a great deal but it’s very temporary. You must keep doing them.
Evelyn don. I am the same I can't sleep or lay in bed I have to sit in a kitchen chair the pain is unbearable in bottom of back and leg and buttocks it's horrible
I’ve been dealing with piriformis pain for 6 months. Nobody can figure out what’s wrong and my MRI was NORMAL. I’m finally seeing a orthopedic doctor tomorrow. I’ve been to 2 neurologists and even had an EMG. Everything is NORMAL. No herniated discs and no nerve impingement or damage. 🤷🏻♀️
I've dealt with this off and on for like 7 years. It only ever hurts in the upper center of my butt. The pain is really bad but never travels to my legs or feet. Think that sounds more like piriformis??
Yep, I have piriformis then. I had to go to the ER a few years ago. I had so much pain in my leg and thigh I could barely walk. My leg felt like it was on fire. I was in tears. It hasn't gotten that bad since then. I keep down inflammation (the thing that caused the burning sensation) with anti inflammatory things and foods. Now I just get numbness in the back of that leg down to the feet, and it spasms often. I make the spasms go away with magnesium. Now I am looking into exercises that will relieve the pressure that is on the sciatic nerve. I also know what caused this for me. One day i got the not so bright idea to do 100 squats in one go without preparing or stretching or whatever. 😐 The next day, here comes piriformis performer syndrome. 😑
@@mmueller1473Thank you. ☺️ it's gotten better. Some days I'll m just fine. Then on some days, the spasms or the back pain comes back. Right now I have the lower back pain, but stretching seems to make it go away. I hope things are going good for you. 😊
My doctor had me walk on my tip toes and then on my heels and I felt no pain. I'm having sharp pains in my upper left buttock area to about the center of my waistline. It's a very small area where I get these pains. Trying to determine if it's true sciatica or if I injured the piriformis.
So about 9 months ago I think i tweaked my back. Since then Standing for log periods of time causes radiating pain and numbness in my right butt down my leg. This is also paired with pressure on my lower right side of my back, as if someone is standing on my lower back. The piriformis stretches seems to relieve it alot. I dont feel pain when i sit but my leg does tend to go in and out of numbness at times. Would you say that I its the piriformis?
I might be too late here to get a response, but this video has been really helpful and raises a question: is there a relation between pyrifomis syndrome and trochanteric bursitis? Several years ago I went through physical therapy for the bursitis diagnosis, with pain that was excruciating. Therapy was difficult at first, but wonderfully beneficial! In more recent years I sometimes experience mild pain that is reminiscent of that. The past few weeks I've been having a bit more pain after a strain, and I'm sure from your video this is pyriformis. So is there a relationship to trochanteric bursitis?
For everyone's benefit, it took me 9 months to completely heal sciatica/herniated disc. McKenzie exercises helped me greatly. I avoided stretching the glute muscle since it may aggravate. I did not see a doctor at all and healed it by doing a lot of stretching based on Bob & Brad's videos. I also sometimes took Ibupurofen and turmeric pills. I got herniated dsic due to sitting in a bad posture for a long time due to office work, so I bought myself a standing desk.
Three years ago I fell & broke my hip & shoulder on the same side. Last July 2019 I fell again on the same side. Now, 3 years later Im still in pain & cant walk good. My therapy ended last June. Now do I now whats wrong with me or even know what I have? My Dr. said just condition exercise which I have been doing for 3 years. What can you suggest?
Thank you so much, now I know the difference. I was really confused about this and you cleared it up very well. So what I have is Piriformis syndrome and the pain comes from my left hip down to the foot. I DONT FEEL PAIN WHEN I'M SITTING BUT WHEN I STAND ITS LIKE Hell on earth and walking is an alien to me 😭 I have been like this for 3 weeks

Piriformis is the worse for me after I've been on my feet all day at work, i come home and lay on my bed or lounge on my back, getting back up again is almost impossible. The pain almost paralyses me. It feels like I have no strength or control through my right side\ buttock

I have been dealing with muscle spasm just below where you pointed out, it never goes to the or left but stays generally in the same spot just below where your hip pocket bottom would be in pants. What causes it to act up is long sitting like driving long distance or at the movies even sleeping on my back aggravates it. When I walk to stand it settles down. I have been to PT twice and it always comes back even though I follow the exercise regimen I get from PT after I'm released but it always comes back. I have found that one of those hard exercise balls if I put it where I'm sitting with a folded face towel on it I get instant relief but it never lasts. I've been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. Sciatica symptoms with no pain just discomfort in my buttock. Fine sitting down and standing up and a lot of walking. Sometimes I have to use a tennis ball to massage buttock area.
You mentined only stretching for piriformis syndrome but sometimes the piriformis doesnt need stretching. Sometimes the piriformis muscle is having to work too much & you need to strengthen the muscles around it.I find that when you strengthen the minimus ( muscle opposite the piriformis ) the pain from the inflammed piriformis/sciatic nerve goes.

I just found out that I have piriformis syndrome. I was at the hospital for an unrelated issue and mentioned my sciatic nerve pain. She examined it and ordered an MRI. It showed arthritis but there want bulging disks. I'm comfortable with her assessment. She is a hospitalist (internal medicine) and a DO. I've seen two MDs that diagnosed me with just sciatica but treatment has not been effective. I've also been to a Chiropractor and had limited results but I've still been in pain. Maybe now that the riot of the problem is discovered I can get proper treatment.

It is more rare to have both. But the treatment of true sciatica usually takes priority. As some of the positions for treatment of piriformis syndrome could irritate sciatica. If you find no relief from the stretches/exercises you may require hands on manual treatment to deal with one or the other before treating it yourself.

I got piriformis syndrome after doing gym, especially with exercises for the butt and legs, like squats and lunges. It’s still hard for me to diagnosis. Most of the pain is from hip down to knee. Never to the foot. When I do a groin stretch, as in, sitting Indian still with bottom of feet together and push down on my knees to stretch the groin, that’s when I have the high level of pain. In the hip, butt, thigh area. Is that a sure symptom of one or the other?

Everything I've read online says that piriformis syndrome is exacerbated by sitting. You say just the opposite. This is very important because my wife has had two back surgeries that didn't alleviate symptoms and a recent CT myelogram of the lower back that didn't show any abnormalities .so now we're trying to find a true diagnosis because it's getting worse overall and she is miserable and her symptoms get exponentially worse when she sits down and pain and discomfort is alleviated by standing.. any thoughts?
That bit was weird indeed. As far as I know and from my experience, the pain in piriformis syndrome gets worse both with standing and sitting, it only gets better when laying and not on the side you have pain. The pain gets temporarily better when you change position (from sitting to standing etc.) and it starts getting worse again after a while from the change of position, except when you lay, then it continues getting better. The morning is the moment when it's better.

Im currently doing stretches for my piriformis syndrome (Ive had it for 4 years now) and my butt and legs are feeling better.
I’ve got it as well and it wakes me up at night too but I’ve noticed that yoga stretches help a great deal but it’s very temporary. You must keep doing them.
I recommend a Physical Therapist. They know how to deal with muscles and nerves
Do you sit a lot? If so, sit less and be sure the seat is comfortable when you do.
Evelyn don. I am the same I can't sleep or lay in bed I have to sit in a kitchen chair the pain is unbearable in bottom of back and leg and buttocks it's horrible
Excellent presentation

I’ve been dealing with piriformis pain for 6 months. Nobody can figure out what’s wrong and my MRI was NORMAL. I’m finally seeing a orthopedic doctor tomorrow. I’ve been to 2 neurologists and even had an EMG. Everything is NORMAL. No herniated discs and no nerve impingement or damage. 🤷🏻♀️
I have been in pain for 6 months. Is it horrible.
Very helpful video clearing up some confusion with the overlap between the two issues.
Thank you!
The next day, here comes piriformis performer syndrome. 😑
Stupid hurts and I'm talking about myself>Im in the same boat floating across the sea of pain

Did you find out? Sounds like where my pain is
So about 9 months ago I think i tweaked my back.
Great, clear concise info. Thank you.
I got herniated dsic due to sitting in a bad posture for a long time due to office work, so I bought myself a standing desk.
can you have both? how to treat both at the same time?

Piriformis is the worse for me after I've been on my feet all day at work, i come home and lay on my bed or lounge on my back, getting back up again is almost impossible. The pain almost paralyses me. It feels like I have no strength or control through my right side\ buttock
You’re left handed, you place your right foot forward when leaning. The left side of your back is stronger, shorter and stays flexed whereas you find it hard to actively flex the right side of your back. Am I right?

I have been dealing with muscle spasm just below where you pointed out,
it never goes to the or left but stays generally in the same spot just
below where your hip pocket bottom would be in pants. What causes it to
act up is long sitting like driving long distance or at the movies even
sleeping on my back aggravates it. When I walk to stand it settles down.
I have been to PT twice and it always comes back even though I follow
the exercise regimen I get from PT after I'm released but it always

it where I'm sitting with a folded face towel on it I get instant relief

Great video.. I definitely have a piriformis problem.

2:29 "More pain when you sit".
What if you sit with an intentional lordotic posture?
I just found out that I have piriformis syndrome. I was at the hospital for an unrelated issue and mentioned my sciatic nerve pain.
She examined it and ordered an MRI. It showed arthritis but there want bulging disks.
I'm comfortable with her assessment. She is a hospitalist (internal medicine) and a DO.
I've seen two MDs that diagnosed me with just sciatica but treatment has not been effective. I've also been to a Chiropractor and had limited results but I've still been in pain.
Maybe now that the riot of the problem is discovered I can get proper treatment.

What if you have both? What is the treatment then?
It is more rare to have both. But the treatment of true sciatica usually takes priority. As some of the positions for treatment of piriformis syndrome could irritate sciatica. If you find no relief from the stretches/exercises you may require hands on manual treatment to deal with one or the other before treating it yourself.

MUSIC SPOILS THIS TOTALLY? SWITCHED OFF
Everything I've read online says that piriformis syndrome is exacerbated by sitting.
@@nephtis84 I agree sitting is the worst with piriformis and sitting for hours is often teh cause. His presentation was good except for that. So frustrating for all of us.
