    Such a great fucking podcast. It's awesome seeing cynical Mike start to take pride in it too. This episode he was especially passionate, while still keeping his humour of course; but there was a very obvious shift in his approach over the past few episodes that culminates here for me. Love to see it. Talk about fucking games

    I remember when you were able to have a chat with the employees about the new games out and they could talk to you like another buddy. You'd buy more on recommendations because you felt you knew the employee better and could trust their judgment on games. Ever since they were forced to act like robots people stopped going because all the flavors and soul went away. You didn't trust the employees anymore. You became suspicious of them.

    I like how weird and unorthodox the Gameboy Mario games were. With odd (even for Mario standards) enemies, places, and such. SML2 is also dripping with Japanese folklore monsters, like the umbrella goblin/demon.

    I've been shopping at the same Gamestop regularly for over 20 years, though for the first few years it was still a Funcoland. I've only had problems a couple of times and after hearing stories like Ryan's I always feel bad about the first one. I was cancelling a pre-order for Front Mission 4 because they had gotten Suikoden II in and I knew I wouldn't have enough to buy Front Mission 4 when it came out after buying Suikoden II. I knew the employee I was dealing with pretty well but when he said my canceling the pre-order would get him in trouble I honestly thought he was joking because he would joke around with my friends and I when we came in.

    I played through Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins again a few months back and it really stands the test of time. I wish that Nintendo would develop more games like that.
    Doodle Jump, Dr. Mario World, and Pokémon GO are my favorite mobile games I’ve played. Those all have a lot of gameplay without making you feel like you have to spend money.

  • @StylixDS

    I don't usually bother with mobile games too often but I have a couple that I felt were worth the purchase.
    Ridiculous Fishing is a simple game where you try to guide your lure as deep as possible by avoiding fish and obstacles. After you do hit something the lure gets pulled back up and you try to hook as many fish as possible before it gets to the top. The fish are all then thrown into the sky and you shoot them before they fall back to the water. The game has plenty of upgrades to unlock, and there are NO transactions outside of buying the game.
    10,000,000 is another interesting game. It's a match 3 game but it has an extra element to it. At the top of the screen your character is running through a dungeon. The tiles you match correspond to your actions on the top screen. For example if you reach a door or chest you need to match key tiles, or if you're fighting a monster you need to match swords to attack and shields to defend. The idea of the game is to accumulate 10,000,000 points to win (hence the name). There are plenty of upgrades to unlock that will help make your runs longer. Much like the previous game I mentioned this one also has NO transactions once you buy the game.

    Super Auto Pets is a great "auto-battler" free mobile game. You make an account to track your progress, and you can share the account with the browser version or the Steam version to play on a PC or Mac, so you have your progression no matter where you play.

    Game Stop seems to refuse to change with the times. That's why they are in the crapper. No one really cares about going to a game store to buy games anymore. ESpecially when they shove unnecessary bullshit that doesn't matter in today's times. The internet has evolved significantly. Pretty much everything you used to get at GameStop you can get online with less hassle. Any strategy guide you need you can find on RUclips. Visual guides are better than written ones anyway. If the corporate big wigs had actual brains they'd try to evolve. That's why even Reggie Fils-Aime left their board. He knew that company will soon close.

    • @Asf_932
      @Asf_932 2 года назад +1

      @@spellbinder7036 its funny, cause Mario All Stars SNES was my first experience with Mario and probably gaming. Back then, it was the easiest to immediately pick up and play and get into gaming as a kid in the 90’s. Love the vibes it gave off. But honestly and sadly, i never owned Super Mario World. I’ve dabbled in it over the years, but the most experience i have with it, is watching the youtuber Dashie play it in Mario Maker. I do agree its freakin fantastic and still holds up well though. and i dont blame anyone for having it as their number one. Super Mario games are just so damn good. (Even with the wonky ones like Sunshine, there is fun to be had.)

    The thing is with the Gamestop shift requirements is they're completely unnecessary. There's a local independent store here doing retro and modern games with a large 2nd hand stocking. They give you either less in cash or more in store credit for used things. I love going there trading in some things I don't need and then getting a discount on a new game, no fuss no muss. No warranty sales, no pre-order BS or magazine added sales. It's great. They've been there for years, the staff seems to have a good time, they aren't understaffed either and they're doing good business. As long as they have a good margin on 2nd hand items I don't think any store needs to pressure their employees that much.

    I disagree that SML2 is difficult. I think it’s one of the easiest Mario games, with Mario’s Castle (and the Wario fight) being the exception.

    • @colt5189
      @colt5189 3 года назад +1

    I would suggest for mobile games: Piffle. It's a brick braking game where you launch balls out like breakout but you're launching a bunch at the same time. It has a few levels that seem impassible without the power ups, but if you're really good at the game you'll gather enough power ups to never feel like you need to buy anything. I've finished the main levels, have lots of power ups and there is still a daily challenge. I think I bought something really cheap early on, but once you do it takes away all ads.

    Another great episode guys, on the point that Mike was talking about with the video thumbnails, I definitely appreciate the art you guys use for each episode and it isn't the typical click bait stupid open mouthed wacky face you see on every other RUclips video.
    It is a shame what the mobile platform has become, because those first few years really had some good games, then whale hunting became the norm and the platform is ruined, and honestly, I don't think it will ever reach it's initial potential because they make way too much money with how it's been modeled and people are normalized into accepting it.
    A few of the games I really enjoyed before the platform became what it is, I will exclude all the SquareEnix ports but those are mostly all great.
    10000000, Game Dev Story, Pixel Dungeon, Plants vs. Zombies (original, not the second which is P2W!), Spirit (the developer is Jackyl since searching just spirit has tons of results, Mike I think you will definitely like this one), WordFued, and World of Goo. I am an Android user so I don't know what of these are available on apple's app store.

    I have to stay serious when near pay to win and microtransaction games. Back in 2019 I spend the budget of august in a matter of minutes on Quake Champions, really embarrassing stuff!
