Probably the most friendly woodworker on RUclips. 😊
Thank you.
The shop teacher I never had.
Dave, absolutely a brilliant idea. Excellent presentation & guidance. Only problem I have is you state "make this bench for under $150 (in materials) & for a few more dollars add some accessories, including the UJK part guide system. This bench will not work without the dog holes, consequently the UJK part guide system should be used to locate the holes. I find the cost of the UJK part guide system(in Australia) cost prohibitive & makes your work bench an extremely expensive project, especially for a DYI person(who are essentially the bulk of your audience). Still, an excellent job & brilliant design. Congratulations.
Thanks for the compliment! Re the Parf guide, I know of a lot of people who have purchased a parf guide system as a group, Men's sheds especially. Are you a men's shed member? They might have one or be interested in getting one?
Was just about to drop $$$ on an MFT. Found this video just at the right time to save a good chunk of change. My wallet thanks you.
I am analyzing build vs buy…I am starting from absolutely zero…I don’t even have a track saw or clamps…buying the PARF system is $250 USD…seems like buying squares, dogs, clamps, fences, rails, T-tracks, frame, dust extraction is getting me between $3000-$4000….
What is the thinnest table with tops and frame can be made so I can hang on wall and still park a car when table not in use?
That's a tough decision, but it sounds like you're really weighing your options carefully! 18 mm is the thinnest I would advise. That is the thickness of my benches, works with lots of accesories.
Excellent video and concept.
My only comment is what you said about painting, yes it might not stick on the waxed wooden surface but it will stick on the t-track and the anti-slides, so a newspaper or some nylon will be needed underneath.
You are correct! Thanks for watching!
Dave, you're a good teacher you don't seem to miss out any tiny little thing it's so nice to hear somebody talk like you ,and include, All the Little niceties, it's when you explain something, so many good technicians who do not know how to teach. great video but it was too short, thanks.
Very welcome
Nice video. No small talk, very eficient, very precise. I love his perfect English. No slang, no hickups. Like Pierce Brosnan. Nice tips and tricks. Thanks, I learned a lot.
Wow, thanks!
Dave, just got the Festool Slideway Non-Slip tape from eBay, the last part I really need to buy. I' think I'll use MDF at 1" thick, but I'll test drill some scrap first to see if the Quick Clamps will have enough clearance to install If Not 3/4" Birch Ply will work just fine. Yep I'm home for good in a little over a month!
Thanks, nice job on the video and nice job on the table.
I'm trying to decide between a table saw and something like this. I already own a Makita plunge saw and track. With these tables I'm trying to figure out two things: 1) how do you balance the track so that it is solid against the work piece. Wouldn't you always have to have scrap of what you are cutting around so that is is the same thickness to put on one side or both of the track so that it is supported (such as with a cross cut). Or if I wanted to rip a 2x4, wouldn't I need another 2x(?) just to cut the one? 2) how do you keep from cutting up your table? If you are using the stops and have the wood directly on the table, every cut would have to be amazingly accurate with the depth to cut all the way through the stock and not into the table.
Thank you
Hi Robert Phillips! My plans come with detail on a track support so no packing is required, I never cut on the table. My bench has a unique design to avoid that. A table saw or a circular saw with a fence will be required for ripping 4 x 2. Check out my Mk 11 version. ruclips.net/video/bHHfaE0RjOk/видео.html
i hope you got a table saw
Super, beaucoup de bonnes idées j’ai bien aimé !
Thanks jean-paul MAZEN!
Not everybody can afford that parfdog ,,,how about making it with common tools,,,
OK, go for it. Please post a link for your video when you fininish it
Dave, True Brit follower here. Could you advise on the type of non slip tape you are using please. The only stuff I can find appears to have a grit embeded which I assume yours does not. Any help would be great.
It is the Festool tape for their guide rails.
absolutely love this project and the versatility of such a small platform. This is definitely a work multiplier.
Couldn't agree more!
I have been looking at the MFT's recently and thinking it shouldn't be that hard to make something similar for a fraction of the price. This video came up on my feed like someone was reading my mind lol
Thanks Happy Daddy! Plans available in video description.
I love this mate. I'm definitely making it and it will be so handy to put in the van and take with me to work. Keep the great ideas coming. 👍
yes its good eh
Nice work. Good ideas for using existing tools and clamps on hand. I’m thinking of converting a 1960 36” square card table to something like your with legs.
Great video Dave, can you slide the Kreg clamp into the T-track?
David Newman, if you replace the dome head bolt with a 5/16th inch x 1 inch t bolt.
Does wax get onto your projects you make on the bench?? Would polyurethane be a better choice??
Hi Andre P. No problems with the wax. You can use poly if you want to.
why didn't you wax the surface before routing the grooves? that way, no need for the tape. Great Idea though
Hi Tony Tanner! I don't like cutting through wax with the router.
Nice. What happens to those anti slipping bands covered with dust?
It takes a couple of seconds to dust them off with a brush or shop vac. They are designed to work in a dusty environment without getting any dust permanently sticking.
Gday again, where is that anti slip tape available from, cheers
Hi Dave another quick question , the aluminum oxid pad used on the wax where do you get them and what is the proper name. Also is the traditional wax good for the jarah box I am making or do you suggest another finish. One pf the boxes i am making is Tasy ash which I am going to stein with a wattle stain, can I use the wax over this ?? I am also in the future making the above work piece up in white Melamine for a portable work bench as my Garage workshop is not big enough for a standalone bench. When I am cutting on it I will put down the foam I got from Bunnings so I don't mark the top its excellent when using Festool track. Cheers Kim
Hi Kim Dalzell. Festool vlies. Get them here www.carbatec.com.au/vlies-abr-disc-150mm-0-hole-superfine-stf-d150-sf-800-vl-10?aff=3
@@DavidStanton Thanks for that
At 13:22 you mention you have a pad on your orbital sander. I hear vy-lies. What is that?
Hi Lee Dabkey. It is spelled Vlies and pronounced fleece. An aluminium oxide pad that Festool does.
When designing a bench to accept the Festool standard rail clamps, what is the minimum clearance distance required between the bottom of the 3/4" work surface and a parallel surface below it? Thanks.
Hi Michael Schuler! Enough room for a clamp to rotate underneath.
@@DavidStanton Thanks. Understood. I was hoping you might have discovered the actual minimum clearance dimension in your work developing your benches, perhaps for guidance as to how high to set the standoffs you use under the portable model.
Lucky you, my local Home Depot sell full sheet 76$ and quarter sheet 21$. Most of the time quarter sheets are cut from damage sheet, go figure :(
That is strange!
What is a quarter sheet of plywood. 2' x 4'?
A quarter sheet of plywood that is 2' x 4' is a smaller piece typically used for smaller DIY projects.
I may make something similar or even exact... love it!
Send me a photo or two when you have finished it.
Hi Dave. Those Kreg hold down clamps: You said in one of your many videos that you replace the bolt underneath with something else that'll fit in a T-Track but give a greater area inside the track to withstand the pull from the clamp. Can you remind me what bolt you use please? Keep up the great work!
Hi Paul Roussell! I used 5/16th inch T bolts, 1 inch long.
Awesome table!
@16:00 ... that's one more reason to have a good* rotary tool. Small, lightweight, and smaller cutoff wheel.
(* - Sadly, Dremel has failed me too many times. I've gone through a gauntlet of rotary tools in the past few years and discovered that a certain one (that only costs under $40 US dollars) is amazing. It's a... /ooof it's tough to say the name without feeling ill/... it's a Black and Decker RTX. Best thing... IT ACTUALLY HAS SOME DEGREE OF TORQUE!?!?!? I never tried before because everyone said it only has 3 speeds... but clearly theyve never used it. Its variable speed wheel, with 3 marking (L M H) on the wheel. )
So, just thought I'd throw that out there. I used to whip out angle grinders, or die grinders, far too often for tiny jobs, and it just wasnt necessary. Its like using a chainsaw to cut laminate lol.
Good idea.
@@DavidStanton I only have 1 arm that isnt paralyzed, so I have to adapt. Lol.

David Stanton you have saved me from sleeping on the couch! I’ve been in a tussle with my wife on creating a portable workbench that would have taken away space she wanted for shelving. Your solution allows me to have my custom MFT and her shelving. Bravo!
this is what happens when you get your shit together. im still using saw horses and a workmate.
genius my friend!
Thanks graham!
I have a question 20 mm versus 3/4 inch ? 3/4=19.05mm . is this dogs loose in the holes because of this one millimeter difference?
Every so often somebody comes up with a brilliant idea for a product that every one will want or want to make. I think, Dave, you've just done it. Congratulations! Could this be another 'Workmate' type success story?
Thanks Richard!
@@DavidStanton how come we don't see u on RUclips any more David
Matthew, I'm on every week
I am just getting into this woodworking habit, bloody expensive as it is too, and I am watching lots of RUclips.
Anyway I was looking into the Waxing and then sanding with the Aluminium Oxide pads, can I ask you this (as a numpty) do you buy the sanding pads specifically for your sanding machine or do you buy blank sheets and then fix it to your own sanding machine?
Great channel with fabulous content!
Hi Richard Illingworth! I buy the Festool pads for their machines.
Brilliant idea and job Dave. Made one of these myself (99% copy of yours) with the exception I used wood threads. I bought a set of the Wood Whisperer's thread cutters (both metric and imperial) that have a much tighter tolerance than metal taps. That way I can flip the table, screw in the risers and cookies from the "bottom side" and now have a raw surface to use my Festool track saw on. As long as I keep the depth to 1mm+ sheet good thickness I don't do too much damage to the table bottom and preserve the track and the anti-slip strips in tact. Using the bench dogs to position the track it will be in the same spot all the time (may need a little fiddling lining up the sheet) but the kerf in the table will be in the same spot.
Well done Alex! Flick me some photos to davestantonfans@gmail.com and I will put on the live stream.
Nice job snd excellent video, you always deliver the best!
Being that I'm lazy and if i can save 10 mins i will, i would have waxed the top before routing for non slip tape, then no need to tape up the channel with masking tape.
Can't believe i exerted myself to write that last paragraph 😉
Thanks! 👍
Well, that's got me thinking.
I was planning to build a big workbench with table saw, drill press, thicknesser and mitre saw built or mounted around the perimeter. I'd planned to cover half of it in MFT style dog holes, but I now think your idea is way better. I could leave your raised MFT table in the new bench centre with dogs and various clamping tools left attached for ready access. Meanwhile I can make the main bench more solid with a much thicker surface.
It's got me twitching with anticipation.
Sounds great!
Only just discovered your channel. I have recently moved to an apartment after retiring so no longer have the space for a dedicated workshop so something like this bench top would be ideal.
Plans available at my website. www.stantonbench.com.au
What was the pad you put on your ROS to help with the waxing and where did you get it? Didn't quite catch its name. Another brilliant video BTW
John. It was Festool Vlies. Get the 800 grit version.
It looks like my inserts for 5/16" only need a 3/8" pilot hole. People should check theirs before drilling. Thanks for the video David. It saved me a lot of time when I drilled my benchtop.
Yes, 3/8" is correct.
I make cigar box guitars and have a very limited work area, it's either in my RV or on the picnic table under a tent. Thank you for this video. Also I've never seen a hand plan with a detachable side piece. What brand and model is it?
Thankyou Will Bonner! The jointer fence is from Veritas.
Man, why can't I find MFT tops in the US for the prices I'm seeing people in the UK paying. I found a site that only ships to the UK and it's about $40 for a 2ft x 4ft MFT top while in the US the cheapest I've found them for is closer to $200. Bora Centipede is about $100 but then it's two pieces of 2x2 (I believe) and I've seen a lot of comments about it not being flat.
Thanks for the video. I'm going to see if I can find a local cabinet shop or CNC shop to make me one with some plans I found. I just can't justify the crazy pricing for the guide jig for $250 when I know I'll only use it a few times over the next probably 5-10 years.
Hey Dave, Couple of questions I wanted to ask if I may: On the Kreg clamp you were using towards the end, will the nut on the bottom of it secure it in the T-track slot too so you can use that as a fixing point, and do you know what size the tread is on that if you need a T bolt for it? The other question is can you please tell me what the details are of that drill stand you were using (it's sat on the bench side at 5:27 in), is it any good and where did you get it? Have been wanting one of those for ages but the only ones I can find are absolute crap and there's way too much play in them to do anything remotely accurate. Have been and bought the plans for the bench from your website so will have plenty to keep my busy! Cheers, Steve
Hi Stephen. The drill stand is ok but has its limitations., purchased from Carbatec. The Kreg jig can easily be mounted onto a plywood base that in turn can be fastened to the Stanton bench T Track.
Great video! Great system! Do you know if the UJK Parf Guide System is available in the US? Because with limited funds the shipping from the UK would be out of site.
I think Lee Valley sell it. Thanks for watching Frank. Share the video around if you liked it!!
What a brilliant video Dave, got a few things going on just now, but this is definitely getting added on my to-do list. Thanks for sharing. Calum
Thanks Calum!
Your added tips and commentary are tremendously valuable and really make this video special!
Straight away this caught my eye, so I had to leave the previous film, I'll catch up on it later! Very interesting indeed!
Thanks AoToGo!
What an amazing job sir!
Thank you kindly!
Very nice Dave!! Looks very handy! I admire your attention to detail sir
Thanks Jim!
Exactly what I need.... well almost. I will be building one next week I don't think I have ever seen such a versatile portable bench that's as affordable. Thanks for making this video.
Good luck!
Absolutely brilliant Dave. Just found your channel and have been engrossed for a few days. I can see you are going to be a bad influence, already ordered up some mag switches, and now I can see I am going to have to knock one of these up too. Cheers from Florida...
Hi Steve, it's a slippery slope! Enjoy the ride, thanks for watching!!
Hi Dave
Absolutely brilliant, I don't have a lot of room in my workshop but could tailor fit one to my table saw which would give me a nice work area and when I'm finished with it, it can sit down the side of table saw. Thanks for the tutorial.
Regards Edd .
Thanks for watching Edward!
Hy Dave i made my first recline bench whit the parf guide sistem! Your video are so great!! Thank you so much
Glad it helped!
Just saw your board, WOW!!!! how can I make one & save a ton of MONEY!!!!
Hi Bubba Morales! Check the description box for links.
I have had a few comments relating to using shorter screws to hold the t track in. I like the fact that if the bench is used "upside down" that you know exactly where the steel screws are if using a track saw.
Thanks for posting this well conceived workshop staple!
That screw/saw blade conflict issue is 1 of 2 reasons I use epoxy for this task instead. The 2nd reason is that the short embedment of the short threads easily pull out of the plywood if there’s a strong enough load applied to a track fixture, and the continuous adhesion of the epoxy will not allow that to happen.
Why would that worry you? You surely wouldn't be planning to let any saw cutting be hitting that piece in any way, would you? I know I wouldn't, I actually wouldn't mind making one for myself, thank you for posting this video. I'm going to go and check out your other videos Re: the construction of this table and the positioning of the holes etc. I was thinking you were just using longer screws due to after routing, there wouldn't be a great deal of meat left on the plyboard, so you would want the screws to at least be past the self-tapping thinner tip, and have all the screws in deep enough to have the full thickness of the gauge of your screws and just grind off and file down as you did because they would be in the way otherwise, I like SuperBardley's Idea and I may use Epoxy Resin when I do mine :)...
Hi Dave! I was looking at a new tool by Kreg Tools which I think would be a good accessory for this bench. It is a bench clamp with a base that can be inserted into a 3/4 inch or 20 mm hole. I see the clamp base is also sold separately. I just wanted to pass info this on to you.
Thanks Harold. Yes, it is another innovative bit of must have kit from Kreg!
I love everything I see in you Chanel the best is the way you have everything in you shop congratulations and thanks for teaching to us.
You are so welcome.
Lagendary!! thanks sir
Most welcome!
Thanks for sharing. That's a good looking workbench there, and some great ideas which I hope to copy. I like the way that you added the legs and how easy it is to set up anywhere. The bench dog system has proven itself effective for clamping all kinds of things, particularly carcasses.
However, IMHO bench dogs are NOT GOOD for registering angles as the workbench holes top and bottom rims get damaged when the dogs twist under clamping pressure.
Thanks Jeff. Can't say that I have had that experience with the parf dogs as they are such tight tolerances.
I enjoyed watching this series on making a portable MFT bench. I have watched Peter's video on the UJK system and plan to order it from Lee Valley in the near future. The interesting part of the video on the mft3 bench was your use of the Bench Cookie(s) from Rockler. I had seen the bench cookies over the years and never paid much attention. In preparation for building your workbench, I order eight Bench Cookies from Amazon. I just so happen to begin working on a home project that required me to cut some 4 x 8 sheets of plywood. Rather than drag out some timbers to separate the plywood sheets for cutting, I used the Bench Cookies. I was amazed at how they kept the sheets from sliding apart and then how firm they held smaller pieces when making more intricate cuts. I still plan on using the cookies for the portable bench, however, I may need another 8 for working around the shop or in the home. Thanks for the tip. I enjoy the RUclips videos and the super chat on Sunday.
Regards,
Chuck
The bench cookies are very surprising! Thanks for watching Charles, hopefully I can keep interesting content on my little channel.
Hi new to your channel and really like it
Thanks for coming
Great concept. It is a shame the bench cookie standoffs were 3/4 instead of 20mm. Only wobbly cpmponent
Nothing stopping you from putting a few more brass inserts in the top, thanks for watching!
Dave, what wax do you use? I couldn't quite tell.
uBeaut wax, EEE.
Dave I really enjoy watching your videos. You are a very good teacher. Did you teach for a living? You have a great way of making your points, no wasted time and wrapping up at the end. Good topics too.....
Thanks for the compliment. No, not a teacher. I am a retired builder who works part time a couple of days in a tool store.
So when sawing you just run your blade into all that metal? Maybe it is good for glue-ups and such but it will useless for the things where MFT shines.
This is great! I've been thinking of building a table. But this is something that I could do much more quickly. I would love to be able to put this on the edge of my table and be able to use to hold things for my Domino. And now... I'm sure it will be great for cutting with my TSC 55 I got just today. Loving your channel
Hi Angie, the bench is a great 3rd hand! Thanks for watching.
So anyone in the uk know where I can get these 5/16 imperial size unheaded threaded inserts? Everything seems to be metric here now ..
Great video. For the Craig Clamp....put a T-bolt on it with a theaded nob (or flange nut) and slip it into the T-Track. Then you can use it anywhere along the T-Track, and remove it relatively easily.
This is something I have shown in detail in other videos, works reasonably well.
@@DavidStanton I actually just watched another one of your videos, and seen it in the background. I just found your channel a few hours ago, so I'll have to catch up, lol. Great work my friend, cheers.
This is great. Would love to see your attempt at making the MFT with legs. Been trying to find a really sturdy and minimal DIY leg design for my diy MFT
i would buy one from you love it
Thanks janna!
Very nice David. You brought so many handy shop items together and have them working in concert to create a super work surface that an be easily transported to wherever its needed.
Heaps of fun working it out and creating the bench Bob!
Perhaps Euro screws with predrilled holes would be an alternative to cutting off screw ends. You can get 6.5mm x 10mm for $22 for a box of 1000 from Trademasterjoinery.com.au. You might have to redrill and countersink the track holes.
I have those screws Stephen. Maybe an idea for the future?
As always ... great & informative show. Keep up the good work. I constantly learn about woodworking. Greg S from MA USA

That is quality, now package the whole thing up with all of the accessories and start selling them.

Enjoyed your video. I like the way you present the information you are sharing. Clear and concise. Thank you
How accurate is that drill guide? I've been looking for one for years, but I'm afraid all of them are going to have wiggle room between the rails and the guide.
Extremely accurate!
David thank you again I've not been subscribed to your channel long but in that short amount of time you have helped me out with my own shop so much. This is the best thing yet my shop is rather small so as I watched this Video ideas just started popping off in my head.
Thank you again.

Hi David, I really enjoyed watching this video. I recently purchased the UJK system and was excited to see your enthusiasm and endorsement. I hope to start drilling the holes in my new Paulk Compact bench tomorrow. However, I think I'll be building one of these too because it looks like another great addition to the shop and I have almost all of those accessories already on hand. How did the special 20mm bit perform in the ply? Keep up the great work!
I was very impressed with the tolerances and cutting ability of the 200 bit. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video! I bought the UJK Parf system when it was first released and I've made a couple of quick benches out of MDF. This Parf system should be one of the first tools for the new woodworker or any woodworker.

Glad you liked it Tim. Send me some pics when you make it!

You know Dave, those inserts are easy to put in with a drillpress and bolt, but I suppose most any method works. They go in nice and straight with the press although I'm not sure about how easy it'll be with a 2x4 sheet especially with my cheapo 8" horror freight press..
Nice project. I like it..
Even harder with a larger sheet of ply! Thanks for watching martino! Share the video around if you have any friends who may also like to do something like this.
David Stanton Of course I'll share.. Unfortunately I don't know many other people around town. I'm kind of new to these parts and I'm a bit of a homebody anyway.
How about 4 4x8 sheets all connected? That would be fun or life ending depending on how you look at things.. lol
Hey Dave very good invention I like it a lot, even people who keep their workshops tidy are talented !...lol you get the joke.
Cleanliness is next to inventiveness!
Hey, what grit burnishing pad do you use? Thanks
Thanks Dave for developing this bench concept. I've ordered your most recent plans and I have the Parf Guide system and I understand how to drill out the standard 96mm spaced 20mm holes, but I not exactly sure as to drill out the offset Rip (R) and Crosscut (C) holes on this Stanton bench. Is there a way to was the Parf drill guide to drill out these "R" and "C" holes while indexed into one of the normal 96mm spaced holes? Thanks
Thank you for your support and for ordering the plans! I understand your question and I'll do my best to explain how to drill the offset Rip (R) and Crosscut (C) holes using the Parf Guide system. Stay tuned for my detailed explanation in an upcoming video! ruclips.net/video/G59Xx15C8bo/видео.html
Looking forward to my ujk system to arrive and this type of worktop is first on my list. Followed by Timothy Wilmots MFTC. Thanks for another great video Dave.
Just subscribed.
Welcome!
Fantastic!!!! This is going on my project list. Thanks Dave!
Thanks Charles! Send me some photos when you are making it!!
Has anyone tried this using the standard MFT replacement top? Is it too flexible as compared to plywood? I was thinking the t-track slot would weaken it too much. Thanks
I did a video of something similar not too long ago. Next time I make one I'm going to use some Arm-R-Seal...buffing out 3 coats of paste wax wasn't fun. Looks like you'll get a lot of use out of that. Great video 👍🏻
This Is fantastic. I am always looking for ways to hold jobs especially when I am away from the shed.
Hope it goes well for you Rob!
nice video David Peter will be very pleased with your ideas many thanks
Maybe, maybe not? Peter is a perfectionist and using his drill bit as a centre punch may have annoyed him? Anyway, the backbone of this project is his system! Thanks for watching!
Have you found an alternate source for the non slip cushioned tape? Looking at what I've just had delivered from Festool it seems like it is probably just neoprene strip. I'm considering using quite a bit of it for jigs in our hackspace, so the Festool Premium adds up.
I used a few things but the Festool product was the one I kept coming back to.
Hi David, I live in Sweden and here in Europe we use millimeters. I have planned to build an assembly table and I have got hold of "bench cookies" which are thread 5/16. Where can I get ramp sleeves with that thread.
Thanks in advance and nice videos.
Sincerely
Daniel Ekberg
Have you tried ebay?
My wife laughing at you, thinking that's exactly the sort of thing that excites me! Love your Vids Dave, I will be building this when I get home in December! Outstanding!
Hahaha, well it is good that your wife knows you and I bet you have a giggle at some of the things she watches?
Spooky, ye know me too well?
Fantastic as always! Please would you mind sharing how you attach the Festool hose to the dust port of the Dewalt router? I have the same setup and the hose keeps slipping off, so am wondering if you cut off the outer clear plastic collar away and just kept the inner collar?
Thanks eddomak! Yes, you got it in one re the dewalt outer plastic!
David Stanton what type of vac system. Do you have a link
Good video Dave. Very creative. I also have Peter's Guide system.
Thanks Lou!
