The lyrics of „Vielleicht Vielleicht“ are a prime example for why it's not easy ("nicht leicht") to translate poetry or song lyrics from one language into another. In a literal translation the gist of the meaning is conveyed, but many nuances get lost.
This starts with the play (or dance) of words between “vielleicht” (“maybe”) and “leicht” (“easy”, “light” - in the sense of “not heavy” -, “simple”, “readily”, “facile”) In fact this “maybe-easy axis” forms the backbone of the whole song. But of course, in the direct translation the relationship between “maybe” and “easy” gets lost.
The same is true to the easy and fluent flow of sounds and syllables in the German original (“Und du bist süß, wie du aussiehst, wenn du genießt”). Or the rhymes like “Weil du siehst, was ich sonst niemandem zeige. Ich kann dir erzählen, was ich mir selbst verschweige” which in German “sounds so good”, as someone else remarked here in the comments. (“Because you can see what I don't show anyone else. I can tell you what I don't tell myself.”)
Then there's the “semantic rhyme” (i.e. not “rhyming” with similar sounds, but similar meanings) between “leicht” and “einfach” (“simple”) which do not sound similar at all, yet occupy the same “semantic field”.
In fact, the whole first part of the song with its endearing little scenes of an easily successful relationship where everything comes naturally, is one big variation on the theme of “lightness”.
Or the subtle way the theme of “time” (and hence transience) - "Zeit" - is introduced into the song: “Du gibst mir Zeit” (“you give me time”) - “Du magst jede Jahreszeit” (“you like every season”).
The repetition “vielleicht vielleicht” brings the German idiom “vielleicht, vielleicht auch nicht” to mind: “maybe, maybe not”. But the pessimistic, doubtful part “maybe not” is deliberately left out.
In the song “Hinter klugen Sätzen” (“Behind clever sentences”) Henning makes these doubts very explicit: “I am afraid to love, always doubting / Failure in the back of my mind / Because everything passes at some point / Because everything passes at some point.”
This knowledge in the back of the mind, that “everything passes at some point”, that nothing in this world "will be like this forever", is also implicit in the “maybe maybe” . But here in “Vielleicht”, it is explicitly denied by refusing the “maybe not” part - and by the defiant and confident interjection “Und ich glaube, das geht!”, which means “I think (or literally: "I believe") that's possible”; “I think that works”; “I think we can do that”.
So we have a beautifully light, easy, optimistic love song with a little tinge of melancholy (“vielleicht, vielleicht auch nicht”) which I also imagine to detect in the melody of the hymnal chorus and whicht makes the whole thing even more beautiful.
BTW: Here's a cute little animated cartoon with the chorus by German youtuber Plankton::

I’m learning German, and while I’m definitely nowhere near good, I think another lovely nuance of the song is how similar “vielleicht” and “wie leicht” sound, especially at the end of the song, when it’s just vielleicht repeated over and over. I think it makes the vielleicht both convey how easy and wonderful the relationship is, with “how easy” being able to be heard, and the desire for it to stay that way forever with the literal lyric being vielleicht.

Ach!!! I LOVE the Proberaum sessions, all of the songs arrangements are so much better/richer than the original ones, and I think the band really enjoys these sessions, too - it kind of oozes through. I just knew you'd enjoy this enormously, now that I've binged your AMK reactions. And I have to say it's been a great pleasure to find someone who is on the same path, because I have tried to force my friends to listen to AMK and they just smile & roll their eyes.. They don't know what they're missing, and I haven't had anyone who I can gush about AMK with. So glad I found this little corner of amazing fans!

It's fun and invigorating to gush for a band once more and to find other people who share your enthusiasm. It didn't happen to me since the 1990s with Nirvana. Okay, I have to admit, it's also a bit time-consuming to spend so many hours watching and listening (and re-listening) to AMK, searching “new” (at least new to me) videos, interviews or sometimes even songs by AMK on the internet, and watching reactions by other people to their music.
But hey, I have so much catching up to do. I only rediscovered AMK a couple weeks ago, around late January/early February. Since then, I've been on a fast-track training program to become a dedicated AMK fan. (Yes, and to be honest: I developed a major celebrity crush on Henning May. When I turn off my computer I will look at a photo of him as my desktop background … 😊 Am I weird or what?)

A very nice play of words in the lyrics: from "vielleicht" (= maybe, perhaps) to "leicht" (= easy, lightweight).

Relationship are tricky to find. First of the most dangerous thought that some people have is the question who is interested in you or who you can get - that is so distorting reality - it’s fact that the person that is right for you is the person that you are right for. So finding the right person is all about a thousand nos and one very obvious yes. The big problem is that there are two kinds of attraction/love we fall in love with people that are similar to us over time, but the instant/early love signifies a ability that she has that we need/admire - without the similar basis the latter can turn into resentment. So the main thing for love is patience, if possible don’t date but get to know people until things happen organically.

This is my favorite band and I love this song and your reviews but some of the lyrics made me scratch my head and I hope I misinterpreted them. As I see it, the object of his affection is extremely chill and agreeable, and happy with very little. Her value lies in the fact that she is easy to be with because she has endless patience and zero needs. And for all of that, she just gets a maybe 😮 That said, I still find myself smiling and singing along whenever I hear it and try not to look too deeply into the lyrics.

    • @TheSoewi1963

I don‘t think she only gets a „maybe“ - to me it‘s more the expression of his cautious hope that it may stay this good - maybe he doesn‘t really dare to believe in it?

    • @luciustitius
      @luciustitius 25 дней назад

@@TheSoewi1963 The lyrics are also quite self-reflective, imho. She is so sweet and innocent and loves him so simply and unconditionally. And he enjoys this but knows that he is far too complicated, erratic, even narcissistic and broken to maintain such a simple and easy relationship - and this "maybe" therefore also expresses sadness and despair. And the composition compliments that mix beetween joy, hope, sadness and dispair beautifully right in the middle of a harmonic minor and a mixolydian.
