● Description
Mini arcade machines seem to be on trend these days, but where's the fun in buying one off the shelf. Here's a DIY mini arcade cabinet I made in 2011 and only just got around to finishing this week. It's based on Atari's Gauntlet arcade and aims to be completely playable while retaining the original machines proportions and style. How did I do?

Thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed watching this revival as much as I enjoyed making it. It's so cool to finally have it finished. Yes we should update it from Windows XP, but right now I'm just enjoying the games...updates can wait a little longer. Maybe not eight more years though.

Neil - RMC
RetroManCave No. I’m jealous. :D
Putting ETA Prime out of a job!
You’re becoming The UK 8-Bit Guy. Very nice work Neil.
Excellent, fun project! Retro gaming is an amazing hobby/passtime,the unsung PC community.
@@DQSpider they do! They are wired to the minipac like the other buttons so I've mapped them as credits
In my opinion there's little reason to update at this point unless you want to run even newer games. I'm not sure how Pi 4 performance will pan out but will it be better than a good Core 2 Duo setup?
RetroManCave Think I’d like a retro road trip... :D
Did you find the side art or draw it?
There was something extremely pleasant about watching this come together. It's one thing to restore a mass manufactured computer or console, but it's another level of care that goes into fixing up one's old custom passion project.
Wonderful stuff.
I thought there was an extra level of love for this one, too. I mean I love my work and there's a bit of scope to indulge myself, but to actually have a project like this _be_ your work? That's living the dream, that is 👍
Agreed, I can't believe he isn't over a million subs yet!!!
17:10 in - All I could think about was "OK, Dougal.... These are small… but the ones out there are far away. Small… far away…" Cracking job, that looks like a lot of fun!
:D yay that was the reference. I love my brick.
@@RMCRetro classic :)
I must admit, this episode has really inspired me to make something like this, cheers for doing it :D an awesome show as always.
That's great to hear I hope you have a go at making something
I do enjoy the content that you put out on this channel. I love this mini Arcade love to get hold of one but I just do not have the space so i just keep watching your videos
Pico PSU was a revelation. Never seen one before......
Wow, that looks awesome. And great to see what can be done with some relatively inexpensive parts. Really nice finish with the artwork and the software.
what a joy :)
Thinking about it, a bigger monitor, the speaker(s) placed to bounce sound off the screen, and an acoustic maze/absorptive foam/whatever to improve the sound would probably be a good change. You'd be able to fit the speakers right under the control panel by the looks of it.
Oh, and above the main screen, one of those rearview-mirror screens that Ben Heck used on one of his pinball machines, for the particularly ambitious.
Very nice!
Great project. Well done. Sad to see they are US coin slots rather than British ones. 🙁
2:18 thought you were gonna say it was designed so long ago that you still had a full head of hair 🤣
An arcade machine without genuine sanwa arcade parts? UNSUBSCRIBED!!!!
Very nice music choice, love that retro synth sound :)
What's the song at around 15 minutes in?
@@elblanco5 Purple Voyager by ELFL
@@dragster40 Thank you! I was trying to find this too.
He always puts the music in the description which is very helpful.
That was beautiful. The custom artwork on the sides are a step beyond.
Just paint the plexiglass to cover monitor edges laddie :)
Och aye!
It's more traditional to stick something to the back underneath the "glass".
So you can change the bezel to match the game.
ya. also I wonder if clear plexi would've been better. the smoked glass on OG arcades was to diffuse the constant flash of bright photon guns to your eyeballs. backlit LCD is darker to start with and might end up too dark with smoked glass
Awesome stuff there Neil. It looks great, all those little touches really do make it look the part. You might have noticed my full sized Arcade machine project in my Avatar pic, thats been around 6 years in the making itself. It has a region free PS2 & a PAL Dreamcast inside, its been up and running for ages, its the cosmetics that need doing, such as painting, new T-molding, getting the side art on, etc etc but i just never round to it but this has video has inspired me to get working on it again this summer.
P.S. SEGA RALLY with a joystick?
I love how "Younger Neil" is addressed as a 3rd person !!
Great video *RMC* .
This is why I love your channel Neil. You have such a loving attention to detail in your work. It's a delight to behold.
This is indeed an epic machine!! ... well done getting this bad boy sorted after so many years!! The quality of this unit far exceeds most commercially available units!! Strong recommendation... build your own!! It’s worth it!! :-)
Absolutely gorgeous work Neil! I have neither the knowledge, tools or workspace to do this myself but damn if it isn't tempting. :) That custom reproduction artwork you did is extremely impressive.
I didn't know that HyperSpin was no longer being actively developed. That's too bad. As complicated and often frustrating as it was/is, it's still a very powerful tool. Though I suppose if it still works on modern versions of Windows, the most current release should still be fine.
Gosh I'm jealous of his skill levels, I'm just a STANDARD NERD, I can't do wood working or artwork like that, I get so much enjoyment from his channel, I wish I could afford to be a patreon, during Melbourne's almost 4 month lockdown his channel kept me sane... Thank you for this wonderful youtube.
Your views and comments are support enough Jon, I appreciate anyone who chooses to use their time here. Glad you like it!
Beautiful job. Get that disk backed up immediately.
Good lord, that is truly amazing - especially the artwork. Total Illustrator skills!
Gauntlet & Bubble Bobble would be two perfect compact-form Arcade machines.
Absolute brilliance. And the perfect choice of arcade machine as inspiration for the cabinet... Gauntlet is still my all time favourite game (well, Gauntlet II technically, but hey)
I'm glad this one found its way out of storage, the finished product looks absolutely gorgeous.
Awww man I 'wasted' so much time back in the 80s playing a full size version of this machine. This looks like it plays amazingly, well done! One last 'upgrade' would be a more modern much brighter LCD screen, as this one's pretty dim. Still amazing though, a real tribute. Like you many moons ago I bought an arcade machine, still have it, a Rygar full size game machine - jamma stuff ripped out, old monitor ripped out, replaced by a cheap PC mini tower and MAME.
4:24 I'm actually watching this on a windows XP computer I repaired last year! (it had a leaky cap that was causing it to blue screen) it's a Dimension 8400 desktop.
wow that pc is actually better than my day-to-day machine, the one i'm using now! scary
Same ;_;
I would love to build one of these, I do own a fullsize Video Wizard Arcade Cabinet but always wanted a Gauntlet Cabinet but no way have the room for one, it would be great to build one of these. Or maybe a full size four player control panel that i could use with my 50inch tv... regards Richard
Thank you for practicing art. This was 4 player game that was awesome after school pleasure for me.
I subscribed, immediately.
very nice work sir. been fixing & building a lot of my machines but always toyed with the idea of making a couple of mini machines running, say a 60 in 1 card or even a pandora's box
Do it Ollie, I'd love to see your woodworking skills on a Mini
Absolutely love this; fantastic work and end result. I love arcade machines but the closest things I have at the moment are three arcade sticks with various modifications!
I absolutely love the project! Masterpiece! Only thing I personally couldn‘t resist now would be to bring the arcade frontend to a modern state of the art by installing LaunchBox / BigBox / Rocketlauncher combo. (Which CAN be a b**ch to configure btw and will throw up a ton of 32/64bit compatibility issues at first with various emulators, especially when using the (rather dated) Core2 Duo / XP 32bit infrastructure ...) But that‘s only me. Would be a huge followup project... Others would insist on the (in)famous „never change a running system“... ;)
You waited till the OS it uses is also retro. I approve.
Have recently been toying with making a mini arcade machine like this but to use a spare lynx10b tablet as screen and the PC so only a speaker and joystick required.....
I made my arcade bar top in November 2018 with ras pi. I guess I should make a video of it! ;) In February I came across Batocera and decided to use a the same duo core.
I still have my Core2Duo E8500 PC...just haven't turned it on in about 7-8 years. I think I had 8GB RAM in it and both XP and Win7 (and probably a Hackintosh partition and Fedora partition). I also still have the AMD Opteron 185 PC I had before that...and the AMD AthlonXP 2800+ PC before that. Just can't seem to throw anything away, I guess.
I really enjoyed this episode. I remember the two of you making it first time around but never saw the end result.
Excellent. Some months ago, I have bought an arcade joystick set from ebay, that came with the joystick, buttons and a little usb board. That works fine. I think, with a raspberry pi, a 10“ tft and a tft board, an amplifier board, speakers and maybe some rgb led stripes, it could be fun to build an arcade from it :-) Maybe a touchscreen could be helpful. I have that on the display...
It's amazing! Just out of curiosity, is the 2 player button just for show? EDIT: Okay a minute after writing this in the ending speech you explained this all :D That's the disadvantage of writing a comment when the question "what do you think?" is asked in the video.
I knew it was going to be a Mini ITX when I saw the title :) Beautiful piece of kit! Very jealous! I bet it plays and feels so much better than a Pi too :)
Great video as always. A couple of additional changes that you could do to the cab are:
Take the bezel out, on the back of the bezel mask off the area where the LCD is displayed and spray paint the bezel "border" black (this way you get a smooth finish when looking from the front). This way the bezel of the LCD monitor is hidden and screen looks like it is "hanging in mid air".
Also, you can always buy the t-moulding that you want and use a sharp knife to cut the spline off and use some adhesive to stick it to the cab.
By far my most favourite video to date....
Absolutely fantastic mate...
The fact you've used the hardware you set out to originally, excellent!!
Amazing cabinet mate. What printer and paper do you use for the decals if you dont mind me asking?
Those of us who saw the sneak peek photo on Twitter thought this was a full-size arcade machine... and rightfully so, because it looks amazing. The reproduction of the artwork on the side of the cabinet is just stunning.
Wow I wish could get one like that.
Take usual T molding and cut the "I" off and double sided tape on, had to do this on one part of my full sized machine.
The kick plate is a nice touch. You are right about it needing some spillt cola splatter, and other wear.
Well this was just wonderful.
Beautiful work, my arcade took 5 years but worth every minute
Really cool! Looks great! But yes, getting all the software working is why I quit my project.. I do love Hyperspin though!
That does look lovely, even standing on it's own switched off, it would make a great talking piece in a room!
Thanks Larry I appreciate the approval of your experienced eye 🖒
Looks great and really cute and fun! Shame you didn't mount the motherboard further forward (or back to front?) so you could hide all the cabling inside. Also, what about a (black?) vinyl sheet cut as a surround for the monitor? Self-adhesive to the smoked plexiglass and would cover up the bezel nicely. Simple but extremely effective at hiding the "TFT Monitor" logo. Looking forward to version 2!
Some nice ideas thank you. I think a little bezel improvement can certainly be made, I was thinking of just priming and spraying the monitor bezel black. The reason for the ports and cables is explained at the end, this was a master unit for a slave to plug into
Brilliant, I wish I had the skill and the patience to build one of those!
A very nicely made arcade case. Why did you originally abandon this project after putting so much effort into it ?
Also, was there a reason why you still used XP (32-bit with 4GB of RAM) in 2011, 2 years after Windows 7 came out ?
Good questions. One answer involved a divorce, several house moves and a year in France.... the other... I really can't remember now why I chose XP. Probably just seemed easier at the time for the goal!
Fantastic Neil! It’s beautifully put together, and the panel artwork is terrific! Did you recreate from hand, or were parts live traced? Either way, great Illustrator skills! Hypercade looks fantastic too - I wonder why development ultimately stopped? The plexiglass scoring/cutting part did make me wince though...it’s like watching a loved one attempting to chop an onion with a blunt knife - you just close your eyes and hope that they don’t slip! Fingers crossed you’re able to find the sibling mini arcade and reunite it with it’s more attractive brother!
Thanks! Yes it wasn't my best moment of improvisation but needs must. On the art it was a combination of manual tracing and live tracing some of the more complex shapes, followed by manually tidying them up. A little of everything.
I was going to say something sarcastic (as per usual) but that artwork Neil is bloomin' brilliant Neil! You are one talented guy after all! P.S. Good to see no white vinegar is harmed in the making of this Arcade Cabinet. P.P.S. 1Click Whistle Song where art thou?!
Thanks Pierre!
My main memory of Gauntlet was how it would grass you up: "Elf shot the food."
Man, i'm really liking the DIY feel, plus i absolutely love the "kick plate", which is not necessary, but is 100% necessary :)
Heh, I still have the EVGA-made version of that motherboard. It powered my HTPC for years.
Brilliant Project. Great job. loved the video
Thanks! And to think just last week a real, full sized Gauntlet cabinet arrived here for the arcade museum, I’m going to have to get a photo of the two together
Great job, I really like the design of it.
It makes me want to build one too :)
Awesome video! Yeah it’s funny right after the Pi’s were released you didn’t see any hyperspin setups with a computer anymore really. My bartop is huge because I was going to put my laptop in it. Now it’s a tiny raspberry pi 3 based on the recommendation of my late friend.
Not 4 feet away from me, a mini-ITX case rests forlornly, with that same motherboard inside it, sporting a dual-core Pentium. My main PC, about 5 years ago.
Quick get some MDF!
What a great project. i am glad that you resurrected it for us all to see. The artwork is outstanding, and the choice of hardware makes for a competent machine. I have one question: how comfortable is it to play? It is too tall to put on a bar top, and if you put it on a coffee table you can’t get your legs underneath. I noticed in the video you were sitting sideways on the table. Not a criticism by any means, just wondering.
I usually stand to play it as you would at a real arcade and that's fine... but I also have a motorised desk and a stool with a lot of height range on it so between those two I can sit and play. The sideways angle was more for the camera shot there
i am building a full size one with a ps2 and a 21'' crt
Nice job ! and I'd stick with the HDD as an SSD will get destroyed by windows XP eventually.
Kick panel that looks like diamond plate is nice touch.
If I was a baby or a midget I would enjoy this very much.
Needs some ciggie burns for authenticity.
That thing looks amazing!!!! Great job!
breath taking ! I love it ! You could make a faux coin door to dress up the front as well.
That's high on my list of "things to make when I finally get a 3D printer" :D
@@RMCRetro Nice ! :D You could also make one with a mold & resin.
Awesome video. Nice to see something a little different too on your channel.
I also want to mention those Zotac boards from 2010-2012 allowed you to overclock the front side bus. I was able to push the E8600 which was rated at 3.3Ghz up to 3.9Ghz. I am sure you could push the E8500 to near the same level...depending on the silicon lottery, maybe even more. It really didn't change thermals that much either. It did help with the 32 bit era games.
Great tip thank you very much I might have a play with that
Awesome :) That came out really nice.
Did you print the artwork yourself, or send it out? If you did it yourself, what printer do you use?
Thanks Pete. No I sent the art off to be printed on the adhesive vinyl
Siiiiick, way to go using hypersin, I have a fuly complete Mame hyperspin should you want a copy
That is really nice, superb job and i want one !
Looks like there is a big variety of games on board. Love to have one a little bit larger with a 20 inch screen but still be a tabletop unit.
I think it came out beautifully, great as t job.
This is Awesome!!!!!!
A thing of beauty. Great episode.
The only thing that I would change is change the coin inputs to 10p!
There doesn't appear to be any cigarette burns... So much for authenticity.
That's fantastic mate. A marquee light and some t-molding down the sides would be nice but I suppose after 8 years you have to call it finished at some point!
(Edit: oh you mentioned t-molding at the end too)
Maybe v3 can fix that. The marquee light doesn't really bother me so much as the original Gauntlet didn't have one. Maybe I should put some LED's on the back to throw some cool light on the wall behind it while you play
I do hope you find some 10p covers for the coin slots :)
@RetroManCave Where did you get the illuminated credit push buttons at?
I'm really sorry but I can't remember. I've just looked through what links I have and they aren't there so it's going to be a google job I'm afraid
Beautiful work! Do the coin buttons give you credits in Mame? :)
They do yes. Thank you!
Very nice job.. My hats off to ya brother!
Fair play. Quality show and enjoyable to watch.
What is the name of the little white brackets connection PCB to the wood plate. Maybe a ebay link.
I think you're talking about the PCB mounting feet... rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F111969462514
RetroMan.........needs.........food........badly!
That's awesome man! keep making things
What's the song at about 15 minutes in when you do the reveal (the retrowave sounding track)? I don't see it listen in the music listing.

@@dragster40 awesome! Thanks!
That is absoulty amazing mate I'd love one of them
I remember playing Gauntlet back in the day always 4 of us it was a game you needed 4 people to really get into it
Gauntlet is a real social game I agree, happy memories!
Looks gorgeous, great job very jealous
Thanks Neil, your videos always put a smile at the end of the day...
That's a lovely thing to say thank you!
Neil this was great! We've all toyed with the idea of making a cabinet. This was executed brilliantly, good show mate 👍
