- This is a mid project video showing some progression and some methods used to enhance the ride film further. BTTF the ride is being restored slowly from several low quality sources like dvd's and vhs tapes.

This is fantastic! I am building a “Back To The Future” motion simulator ride for my nephew and was planning on using your 4k 2.0 version for the out of ride vehicle screen footage. Although you had done a remarkable job with the 2.0 version, I still longed for a bit more clarity and color saturation. But regardless of what I “loved for”, I was well aware that you had done an amazing job with version 2.0, given the limitations of the source materials you had to work with (and can’t imagine anyone could have done any better, nor do I think most people realize the amount of labour intensive work you put forth in your greatly admired achievement). But, having just now stumbled upon your recently posted progress on version 3.0 I am overwhelmed with delight! The large excerpt of footage from your new, 3.0 version is a dream come true (given with what you accomplished with the 2.0 version, 3.0 looks to be nothing short of magic). I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to make this discovery and will certainly be a primary and integral factor in making my up-scaled, DIY version of the Universal Studio’s “Back To The Future - The Ride”, a rousing success! I can’t thank you enough for all your time and effort. I wish you had a patrion (donation) page in which to help you in your endeavours. I also am infinitely grateful that each version (2.0 & 3.0) is solely the projected ride footage and NOT including any portion of the ride vehicle interior (or in-vehicle audio) as that would obviously conflict with my actual (motion simulator) ride vehicle and destroy the illusion. Do you have any possible, tentative time frame projection in which you think version 3.0 will be completed? Thank You again. G.
I finished the ice age and volcano section but am just having trouble with mapping the locations of objects that need to be rotoscoped in , in a bunch of areas. but at least those other two section are done and I might make an update video on it
I seriously can't wait until the final result comes out!

I have wanted to recreate this ride in VR for years, I'm so excited for this upgraded footage.
I appreciate your hard work. I remember when the ride footage was first released over 10-15 years ago and was disappointed how dull the colors looked compared to VHS tapes from the 90s.

Heya! It's me again, not sure if you can help out with the frame blending but I need help trying to frame blend some footage of Twister ride it out. I am trying to get the projected tornado to be a full and complete version without the telephone poles getting in the way. I could send the footage over to you to see if you can frame blend them if possible. Please and thanks!

I don’t know if this is helpful. But I have about 2 feet of the welcome to hill valley segment.
That was cut from the reel and replaced due to minor damage.
If you can somehow digitize that or scan it I would love to help. If it helps capture the true light and resolution.
It’s gotta be somewhere in the the neighborhood of 25 years years old at this point I’m not sure how much longer it will hold up. But if you wanted to try

Could you not AI upscale each individual frame of the VHS I think that would work quite well
Do you have the training file for a motion simulator dark ride? Sure like to see where that file came from lol.
AI upscaling is able to take recognizable objects and add detail to those. However if it doesn't recognize it , it then just upscales it via conventional methods which this video is already using. Due to the lens distortion the objects would flash on and off with detail as they leave the screen , and most of the objects aren't very recognizable to a standard library and AI upscaler would use. Also AI upscalers don't take video into consideration so the image would wiggle and warp through every frame.
What you see on the screen right now is pretty much what the files have to offer. After this , it would need 100% manual replacement of objects using 3d animation which isn't something im prepared to do.

Hi Themaxleydog ! I hope you are doing well. Do you have any news on this project ? For the reminder, I am the guy who is working on the motion simulator + VR. I started working on another improvement that will add a third axis to the simulator and the soft ! Looking forward to hearing from you !

The only thing left to fix is the warping of the environment.
thats fixed by format , not restoration. display it correctly and it will look correct

Thanks for all your effort remastering the Ride. Do you know if Universal ever scanned the 70mm film (in a good 4k master quality) even for archival purpouses? I'm lucky enough to own a piece of history from the making of the Ride. A couple of years ago, I purchased some original slides and photos from the pre-production showing the DeLorean model from various angles. They're quite special for me knowing they were actually used on making the ride. Being from outside USA, I only rode the ride twice on 2007 in Hollywood, like 4 months before it closed. Keep up the good work on the restoration!!!
I do not know if the film ever got properly scanned. The last known existence of the film was at an auction in 2015 a reel was sold for a measly 400$. The auction house that sold it doesn't even exist anymore so the bidder information is a mystery. The national archives also do not have a copy of the film.
It's possible a reel of this film still exists , but as far as who has it , or if it ever got a proper scan.... is not known. Whoever bid on it most likely is going to be a prop hoarder who has more interest in making money or sheer hoarding than any sort of historical archiving.
@@Themaxleydog Just $400? That's not much for a complete reel. I think there should have been at least 6 copies (1 for each Universal park, and 1 backup for each park, maybe?)
I hope Universal did indeed scan it properly before getting rid of it, and that someday they release it in good quality, not the crappy-cropped dvd video we all know.
@@Themaxleydog I just found an Japanese article about BTTF:Ride. It said a company called IMAGICA USA have scanned and remastered the film for USJ in 2000.

@@benliu5353 yes some years ago i was able to locate one of the original CGI artists that did the work changing the pepsi sponsor to the toyota sponsor for the ride. they did a great job. unfortunately since the remaster was done 20 years ago theres no real way of knowing if imagica would have or even be able to share a project like that anymore.
I've built an IMAX film scanner (check my channel), if anyone has any leads on where to locate one of this ride's film reels, PLEASE let me know. I hope to perform a proper 8K scan.
When Can we see Version 3?
I basically ran into an issue of source footage for a lot of the final scenes. I had come up with a solution for this but it would be extremely labor intensive to implement so I got stuck at that point. I just do this for fun in my free time so if i feel like finishing it I will at some point.
Is there a way I can get in contact with you to discuss some possible suggestions? I don't have much editing knowledge, but I feel confident that I could point you in the right direction to find a few new techniques that you could use to bolster the image quality. Thanks! Great work!
I mean there's not a whole lot left in these files , quite literally nothing left on the vhs files. No amount of unsharp mask or AI upscaling is gonna do much. Kinda just desperately need better source files at this point.

AMAZING FOOTAGE... My Daughter is 7 and I just introduced her to BTTF. I'm a VR developer and want to create a VR version for her to experience.
