I Threw My Gopro Into a Canal Lock and got Incredible Footage!

- The aim of this session was to throw my gopro into an Urban lock on the local canal to see what lives down there and also to hopefully catch some fish at the same time. I lowered a gopro fitted with a torch down into one of the largest locks on my local canal. I got some fantastic footage including perch feeder on the maggot feeder. The footage makes for some real interesting viewing!

Amazing how looking up from the water you can clearly see the edge of the bank - so you can see how easy it is to spook fish if you're not sat back - & why some of the match guys use white pole tips so they blend into the background of the sky.

Hi Chris, you deserve a big reward for the beautiful way you treat the fish, all of them, that you catch. Your love for the fish matches mine. Treat them with respect and release clean of problems if retuning. I fly fish for a meal, tie my flies with a fish in mind on the plate. I catch a fish for my meal and stop. Play it gently, cleanly dispatch, clean through the gills and a slit at the vent, give the guts to the nymphs etc who feed on them, go home and cook and serve with love. Nick from York

I love reviewing under water footage, so exciting finding what you've captured. Only thing that beats that is fishing shallow, clear water for trout through a large sight fishing hole while ice fishing. I do this in a pop up shelter that blocks out all the glare. It's like a window into the fishes world. Great video as always Chris!

Interesting isn't it? We all try to cast as far as we can but quite often just along the wall or bank is the best location
I was very fortunate to work with Fisheries Biologists in the early 2000's. We worked on tagging and tracking Great Lakes Steelhead on their spring spawing runs. But we also studied salmonids, Walleye, Sturgeon and other species. It was fascinating, and I would say, understanding fish behaviors according to variables like dissolved oxygen levels, temperature, water clarity and more can make you a more knowledgeable and successful Fisherman/Fisherwoman. I am enjoying these videos. Thanks Chris

The underwater footage is never disappointing is it, TGF? Watching it back is like getting bites, the excitement of what might be next to appear.
It's changed our way of thinking about feeding fish. It being far more chaotic than I had imagined personally for sure.
I've always appreciated that fish 'migrate' through locks and hole up where there is oxygenated water by the gates but never ever thought of actually trying to fish in one.

I love canal fishing, mostly spinning in winter is my fav time.
I went the weekend just gone with my 7 yr old lad, he caught a signal crayfish and a few perch, absolutely loved it .
I was told by a dog walker who was passing by the time my lad caught the crayfish that I shouldn’t put it back in the canal and I should kill it, I didn’t kill it ….. just waited for him to go and put it back in the canal ….. then only to find out that it may be illegal to put crayfish back in to the water 😮

Yes Chris this has got to be one of the coolest videos I've ever watched be cool to see one mid cannal and see what all the different breed of fish react like with bits of chopped fish meat maggots etc think you should make that another video and congrats on the milestone 🎣
Hi there this is amazing! didn't know you could get such clear footage underwater with a gopro. I grew up in Latchford and would LOVE to see someone do this in the Manchester Ship Canal! Great way to check out possible magnet fishing sites too!

Fishing is not allowed:
in lock chambers
within 25 metres (one boat length) of a lock approach
within 25 metres of a water point
within 25 metres of a swing or lifting bridge
Amazing how they start to know where the hookbait is, leave it until last but then they wise up, mouth it and spit it out… mostly not stupid
