OBS! Found this after editing the video, but if you are in love with the feather cuff trend, consider buying slap-on cuffs you can add to any outfit: amzn.to/3FAKOTG
You're so true about basics one must have! It took me ages to realize that blazers, boxy tees and crisp white shirts are definitely not for me... 😂 I think that on youtube there's some kind of a fashion 'uniform' which includes those items. We should always listen to our inner self and to our body shapes.
It’s funny for years I hated blazers, would declutter them after buying them. Then all of a sudden these last 6 months they just started making sense. With that being said though I’ll never look for a white button down ever again lol!
Well said. I have spent so much money on white T-shirt’s and white button up/down shirts, and every time I do a closet declutter, these end up in the bin bag. What a total waste.
It’s true, there are no universal “Must Haves” in personal style. According to those nonsensical “must have basics” lists I’m “supposed to” have several pairs of jeans, but I never could stand them. No Little Black Dress for me, either, I don’t like wearing black, it makes me look ill. Or high heeled pumps, never! There is no “required basic”. We humans seem to like the simplicity of rules and lists, but it’s best to make our own based on what we love and what works best for us.
I couldn't agree more on polyester! I've been telling everyone not to ruin their sweaters with polyester or acrylic! It's not gonna keep you warm but it's also not breathable, like you said trashbag with arms. Personally I don't buy anything in polyester but my gymwear/other athletic stuff and some of my pants are a mix but especially sweaters should be preferably natural fibers, maybe semi-synthetic and with maybe a bit of nylon if the fit needs that. I'm very sweaty and polyester shirts and sweaters start to smell really bad on me after just one wear and I will feel very uncomfortable and sweaty in them.
Omg girl, ITA re-skipping those ‘essentials’ that don’t suit you. For me that’s button up shirts, I’ve bought hundreds over the years, trying in vain to love them, but I NEVER feel good in them so I have FINALLY let myself ignore them. 😆
Agree with the t-shirts! 'Staples' just don't always work for everyone. They just never look good on me. They cut off my arms, so I now go for either no sleeves, fitted 3/4 sleeves, or full-length sleeves
I hate polyester in the sense of 100% but as a blend I'm not opposed. Esp when it comes to wool pants. Cut with poly they're easier to tolerate against my skin. Or a poly cotton blend in a sweater , or shirt, makes it drape differently. But it's only acceptable in Canadian winter. Summer? Poly doesn't touch my body.
That's totally fair! I personally despise it - but I have skirts and pants made from 100% polyester, and it doesn't bother me one bit. It does however bother me a bit that it does not bother me 😂
Acrylic is awful, too, for knits. I don’t consider synthetics wearable at all. I just purged a lot of fast-fashion sweaters that were “really cute”, but every time I wore one of them, I really regretted it. They don’t keep me warm outside, only sweaty and miserably overheated inside. The more I stick to my natural-fiber fabrics only rule, the better and more wearable my wardrobe gets. One problem with natural fabrics, besides the high price, is that styles can be really limited in them, often to simple basics only (solid-color crew or V-neck), but I hope that will improve as we all buy them more. I would love to find cashmere sweaters with stripes or square necklines, for example, or silk shirts with modern prints.
light grey is so specific but i've thought about this too! it ties into the ideas of needing duplicates one white, one black, one navy and one grey. But we don't need duplicates and we don't need to be told which color is a basic color that everyone should have!
Yes, I prefer silver over light grey. I have silk blouses that are light grey that read silver which looks amazing on me. I also have a velvet polyester blouse that is a great cut on me that also reads silver. I love a little glam in my look so reflective light greys add some vibrancy to my wardrobe.
With polyester sweaters, I’m now strictly no polyester pants! The amount of cold sweat I build up wearing them is unbelievable. Natural fiber all the way.
The “bow” heels have been trending for a couple of years and are still going strong in those circkrs where they are “useable” … and for the feather cuffs, make a diy version, super easy and can be removed later 😊 - just a few ideas.
Yes to so many of these! Light gray makes me look like I have the flu, tshirts make me look frumpy, stripes make me feel horrible and polyester makes me itch and overheat. It took me YEARS to understand all this! And I kept buying all this over and over thinking I could make it work 😣
I totally agree with your view on wardrobe staples! Especially t-shirts, I look so weird in them. I tried to build my capsule wardrobes with must-have basics for a long time, but it always felt so boring 😄 Same with jeans, I just don't like them on me.
Capri pants. I used to be convinced i needed those for inbetween seasons, but they do not suit my leg shape and i am either in long pants or shorts as soon as the weather permits.
I buy for fantasy. I get obsessed when I see something I aspire to be. Last year it was a woman I saw in store in front of me. She wore the perfect latte color slouchy sweatshirt and dark shade of ecru baggy sweatpants. She looked so comfortable and chic, causing me months of search to recreate that outfit (I did, sort of). Now I am into coping a youtuber Yagai_no_moriko. She has the perfect nonchalant Japanese casual I love. I have been on a hunt to find items that resemble her outfits and accessories.
Yes, completely agree about polyester. In addition to not keeping you warm (which is the main job of a sweater or coat),it also pills very quickly and looks worn out after a few wears. I thrifted 3 beautiful wool coats (black, cobalt blue and brown in slightly different silhouettes) this year and I can never go back!
I found myself saying "yes" and "exactly" through this video! I completely agree with that notion not all of us need the same list of basics. I actually don't own a single pair of white trainers nor do I wear sneakers on a regular basis. And racerback tacks are just not for me.
Every point resonated with me!! One of the wardrobe basics I detest is the wrap dress! Looks terrible on me, I feel terrible in one, but I can admire and love it on others😂
so spot on. I really agree with you on knowing if you are warm or cool tone and your thoughts on light gray!!! I will no longer buy jeans, button down shirts, tank tops, t-shirts and any more black and gray clothing. Thank you Naja
Totally guilty of buying duplicates. I will say however it's usually because if I like something I want to make sure I have a backup when it gets ruined or worn out. It can get a little excessive sometimes tho. It's a habit you have to keep under control for sure. ;/ I found it interesting when you mentioned you wear a cool-tone wardrobe and no prints with few exceptions. I realized this describes my wardrobe pretty perfectly except I also don't have much color instead It's like 50 shades of grey over here. Yep even light gray, LOL! If it isn't white black gray denim or olive I probably won't wear it. I think this is my current version of a capsule wardrobe but I will say it has made shopping and getting dressed so much easier.
Some women look chic and effortless wearing basic white tee and straight leg jeans in lighter shade (combined with wind swept hair). I look nondescript and boring. Now I don’t buy or don’t wear it unless it’s under something or I have to (a casual uniform for a chorus I belong to). You got my vote on natural fibers, too. I try my best to wear 100% cotton, linen, wool, or silk unless it’s swimwear and workout outfit.
the white t shirt staples I hate the most 😂 of course not pointing to anyone but oh my god through out my trials, t shirt in general just makes me look frumpy & juvenile. I have tried printed t shirt, stripes t shirt. none of them worked. instead I opt for sweatshirt. although I only have 2 at the moment bcos you know, you have those lazy days. and polyester sweater or coat I despise a lot! once you wear wool/cashmere, you won't look back at those polyester sweaters. honestly so horrible. I always sweat in there. now i know why I smells bad too 😅
Yeah some basics are definitely good to have but if everyone has the same basics we're just going to look the same. I am sick and tired of the one hundredth time a RUclips channel has told me I need to have a beige trench coat. I find them mind numbingly boring. I have a mint green Lyocell one that flows very nice and adds something to my outfits. One thing I love to wear is black turtle necks... I have many many many LOL. I "need" them in different versions. Thick, thin, very tight for layering, more lose, with a pattern, very simple, over sized, cropped, elegant, different materials... also Breton shirts... long, short, thick, thin... it's an obsession. You get the drift. It's become sort of a trademark of my style. I'm ok with that. And I agree with you on all other points.
lovely video, your reflections make me excited for my wardrobe journey. also i love your earrings! i agree, fitted racerbacks are my arch nemesis. square neck tanks are a blessing i'm glad there are so many options for those currently, so much more flattering on my shoulders :) i enjoy t shirts but good scoop neck tees which i find most versatile in my wardrobe are shockingly hard to find!
i’m a “soft gamine” and something i really realized i do not look good in those bbl-like dresses or anything low cut. i look best in mini length dresses that don’t swallow my legs and round necklines. also flare jeans, which i love. but i only have 2 pairs and mostly wear skirts. i have curves in some parts of my body but not others, and i prefer looking basic but also accentuating my short height with large sweaters over my knees. ever since i dressed for my height and not in spite of it, i feel it creates a more “unconventional” look especially with dark colors. personally makes me happy to be a shortie now that i play around with my style!
Its great yr discovering these tips while yr young!! Here in warm California its never colder than 50 and I do have a couple polyester coats in bright colors which are adorable! These are blends which are nice even in a designer brand. And cashmere coats which I bought are lovely but can be very hot where I live and wool attracts moths. Being over 60 I dont buy uncomfortable shoes anymore, or heels, Sneakers or Italian loafers 👍Buying the same thing is a way to define ones style! I have about 10 white blazers and blue n white striped shirts, its my style👍coastal grandma and I love it. Climate and environment plays a huge part in comfort and style. But yr right, shopping can be addicting if we don’t ask ourselves why am I buying this?
Warm whites are one of the biggest mistakes I become aware of since watchin your channel. Definitely now I pay more attention to colours and always go for crisp whites, which I think suit me better. We evolve as well as our routines and duties and maybe so do our preferences. Used to be a big fan of light grey and now Im about decluttering it because I dont ever reach for it. Same for prints, flowewrewd shirts, specially. Better enjoy them from afar, as you say. The uniform printed shirt + jeans doesnt work anymore for me. But I still like a print piece as a statement piece in a simple outfit, like leo sneakers in an all Black outfit, etc. By the way I totally see u in all Black and pointed leo loafers 🙊 I miss your leo coat and leo jumper, you dont wear them anymore? I really enjoyed this one, wish u a nice christmas holiday, Naja, w lots of fun and relax 😊
I live in a warm climate, so I don't normally buy coats, but like you I own two good quality coats. I love your examples of outfits you can make out of them. I didn't know coats were made with polyester? I might buy recycled polyester, but rarely. I enjoyed hearing what works for you and the examples you give.
OMG I thought I was the only one with this 'sad light gray' thing [I'm ok with charcoal too]. But I do have a fair amount of color in my wardrobe too haha.
The way naja feels about light grey is the way I feel about black 😂 I refuse to wear it anywhere near my face and neck, it blends in with my hair and makes me feel bad and blah. Love how I can relate to the ideas in this video, even though my color palette isn't the same
Can I suggest a video comparison between your curated coats in the future! I'm trying to decide if I want to pull the trigger on one of their coats but there's a big difference in price between the styles.
My pro color analysis 40 years ago recommended, among other colors, grays and purples (and silver jewelry). I tried to wear them for years, but never felt great in them, just sad-looking, pale and drab. It was liberating when I finally decided to purge them from my wardrobe, there are so many other colors that suit me that I really love wearing. White, taupe, blues, greens and pinks, mostly the lighter shades of them, make me look and feel good, so that’s what I wear. Plus, I always found purples impossible to style, they don’t go with anything else. As for jewelry metals, I only really love yellow metals and am now sorry I wasted so much money on silver items that I rarely wore.
I have many of the same things on my no-buy list, but I have a lot of trouble with getting the "perfect" item...because I will always see something I think will be better for my style. I have now resorted to the no multiples, or don't replace something that is good enough and still serving me well rules. It is tough thinking you will let that perfect item go, but there is a good chance you can find something you like when you actually need it. Light gray also makes me very sad (a terrible color for me). I am a print lover, however, especially when I find one in my color palette. Great video!
Light grey suits me more as I get older! I especially love silver/dove.grey but it quite hard to find. Very dark. Hades now make me feel depree. Mid to light and neutrals are a big part f my wardrobe. Colder tnes suit me but creams are ow better than bright whites but I'm neutral skin tone, so can go a bit both way. I only wear very few prints. Checks, stripes, paisley, but I'm still very fussy.
I have stopped buying polyester tops also. They are not warm enough when it is cold and polyester is hot and doesn’t breath when it is warm outside? I do not want anything that only works when it is at 72 degrees (22C). That leads me to anything with cut outs on the arms or 3/4 sleeves. I still own some of these but will be phasing them out.
Yes! I’ve stopped with the 3/4 sleeve tops as well. Wearable about two weeks out of the year; otherwise leaves one either too hot or too cold, and the sleeves often bunch up when you put a cardigan or jacket over top.
I've been wearing natural fibre clothes for 2 years now and won't look at polyester garments the same way. especially sweaters. the more you washed, the more it becomes stiff. in fact when you squeeze it, it feels plasticy, a white thread like plastic is showing too! it's disgusting. experience that with my h&m sweaters a lot 😥
I found over time that I really don't like blazers, blouses and button-up shirts. They all make me feel too stiff and proper which doesn't go with my personality and body type.
Every ‘capsule wardrobe’, every column about French style, tells you that a trenchcoat is a MUST. Not for everyone it ain’t! I have tried. But trench coats hate me. Whereas biker jackets (in leather or velvet) love me. Same with the puffer jackets that everyone wears (in black or dark brown) in the town where I live in Sicily. Again I have tried… and failed. A thick Scottish wool jumper works better for me.
i do not wear or buy: wool coats (I prefer warm long puffer jackets), high heels, slip dresses, skirts, ballet flats and floral patterns. and that's ok.
This is the first video of yours I've seen and I've gotta admit you have hit the nail on the head here. I agree with all of these points. I'm cool toned also and I can't tell you how long it took me to realize that I can only wear cool whites. It was hard giving up cream and off whites but they just don't look good on me. Another big no-no for me is synthetic fabrics. Since I've been only wearing natural fabrics even just touching polyester I think it feels like rubber so when you said it's like wearing a trash bag with sleeves I laughed.
Please do a video on brands ( doing some sort of reviews) on where to purchase sweaters without polyester….it seems so impossible. They are all way too plain for me. Only brand close to my style is Sezame but they have polyester and are not affordable. So many other sweaters are too much wool and too hot, heavy and itchy. Alpaca is softer but almost always cut with polyester and if not then the price is way out of reach. I’m willing to invest in good quality but within ‘reason’ over $200 is just not possible. Trying to find the style, color, quality ,material and affordable seems impossible.
Like hearing myself talk here - I feel terrible in light grey, stripes and polka dots. With prints I found a way, I have some colourful silk scarves at hand and when I feel like it I wrap a scarf around my neck or waist which changes the whole look. I also struggled with jeans as I have never liked them but thought I had to own at least one pair. I just got rid of my last one and now I don't own any jeans and I couldn't care less.
White shirts are supposedly effortless, but actually very high maintenance. Stain easily, get wrinkled looking instantly, annoying to tuck in 'perfectly'. Not worth the bother.
@@emmy8526 , I get this. I also find that for me, I can't simply wear the shirt with a pair of jeans and cute shoes. I need to add a ton of visual interest. A side effect of gamine essence, methinks 😄
Loved this❤. I laughed so much, when you said light grey maked you sad😂 i love grey, but in Anthrazit and if lighter, in a light grey melange, thats the name that it always has when its light. But i dont like the plain light grey and i just dont why😅
Sounds like Model Mouth with all the similar blazers🤔. I am so terrified that flared, higher waisted jeans will be hard to find again that I feel like I have to buy loads so I have them for when the trends veer back to skinny jeans again.
I just bought a few pairs of "ultra high" waisted jeans myself out of the same fear, and guess what? They were discontinued and deeply discounted! The fear proved right! Some would question the wisdom, but for me I now have the security of having what fits MY body!
regarding the feather cuffs...one person's trend is another's timeless piece just like one person's timeless t-shirt is a big pass for you. And feathers imo are pretty timeless. They've had a place in every decade of fashion the past century.
I liked your comment it is not wrong, it is just not your style. For me this is true with Breton tops and jumpers. I like them on other people but not on me.
i can't understand how racerbacks are good for anyone's shoulders ...though i'm a bit perplexed how halter tops work on you (and they do!) but still broaden my own shoulders.
Uhh I'm sorry! It's not that rare, but it is rough, honestly. Imagine our ancestors who were allergic to wool though. What was their alternative? 😂 Hope you manage without 💪
Great video right up until the resources of the planet comment. What does that even mean. Saving money buying what makes you feel good is great. It has absolutely nothing to do with the plant.
OBS! Found this after editing the video, but if you are in love with the feather cuff trend, consider buying slap-on cuffs you can add to any outfit: amzn.to/3FAKOTG
You can also buy clip-on shoe accessories!
Or gloves trimmed with feathers. Xoxo
A few of the stores are doing detachable one too. Zara does I think. Although I guess you’re still left with a poor quality garment.
You're so true about basics one must have! Exactly. Im very tired of hearing the 5 French girl basics, ie “trench coat, little black dress, etc” we’re not clones
I couldn't agree more on polyester! I've been telling everyone not to ruin their sweaters with polyester or acrylic! It’s so hard here in the US to find true whites, everything is that yellowish cream!
Try From Future. They have cashmere sweaters that have all those things you were talking about.
light grey is so specific but i've thought about this too! it ties into the ideas of needing duplicates one white, one black, one navy and one grey. But we don't need duplicates and we don't need to be told which color is a basic color that everyone should have!
I agree about the basic wardrobe staples. It's not a coincidence that so many people repping racerbacks barely have a B cup.
Good point
Yes so true. I always wondered why the made me look so unroportional 😅
Yes, I prefer silver over light grey. I have silk blouses that are light grey that read silver which looks amazing on me. Great video. Totally agree about ignoring the so called 'essential basics' and finding your own key pieces. 💖
The “bow” heels have been trending for a couple of years and are still going strong in those circkrs where they are “useable” … and for the feather cuffs, make a diy version, super easy and can be removed later 😊 - just a few ideas.
I was thinking the same thing about just somehow making removable feather cuffs. Great idea
Completely agree. And I consider bow heels and feathers on blazers when well combinated timeless. Not just for one season
@@gabrielletoliver7187 I bought detachable feather cuffs from AliExpress. Comes in many colors and you can pair them with so many things.
You crack me up! I LOVE how you describe things. A trash bag with arms is the best!! Always look forward to your videos :)

First two items can be easily added to something already in your wardrobe. I.e. boa feathers, and rhinestone trim.
OMG I thought I was the only one with this 'sad light gray' thing [I'm ok with charcoal too]. But I do have a fair amount of color in my wardrobe too haha.
I think Naja you would look beautiful in an all light grey ensemble
The way naja feels about light grey is the way I feel about black 😂 I refuse to wear it anywhere near my face and neck, it blends in with my hair and makes me feel bad and blah. Love how I can relate to the ideas in this video, even though my color palette isn't the same
I’ve done the same with so many of these points! So much improvement.
Can I suggest a video comparison between your curated coats in the future! I'm trying to decide if I want to pull the trigger on one of their coats but there's a big difference in price between the styles.
It's coming soon! xx
Your hair looks so lovely 🧡
I love your earrings!
A thick Scottish wool jumper works better for me.
you look amazing with curly hair
i do not wear or buy: wool coats (I prefer warm long puffer jackets), high heels, slip dresses, skirts, ballet flats and floral patterns. and that's ok.
Nice earings! And great video. I find you so refreshing with your opinions and straight talking.
The shirt is the staple that is useless on my body type. However I have finally found that I do like t-shirts- found the shape and way to wear them.
I could not have said this better quality over quantity
I’m the same with light gray. Need to sell a sweater or two in that color because it doesn’t do anything for me
Agree on the prints too! They just look more casual and larger ones just look gaudy and cheap. The more colors in the print the worse it looks
How about wearing 100% cotton sweaters? I love them.
I hate stripes. They are everywhere, but I don't feel good in it. I had a striped top that sat in my closet for years. Had to let it go.
I’m Copenhagen based and would like to know, what stores/websites you would recommend in CPH? :)
No slip dresses. No fringe, feathers or cutouts. I can wear T-shirts but struggle with the whole white button-down hype 🙄
I totally realise I'm in the minority regarding grey 😂
@@NajaSierra but you like dark grey lol😄
I like them on other people but not on me.
thank you
They should just sell the extra detalis to add to your existing wardrobe. Like feathers as a bracelet so it looks like your garment came with them
I'm with you on the tshirts, with short sleeves, they just don't suit me, as I have broad shoulders and a full bust, they always make me look bigger.
I cannot agree more
I look forward to your videos! it is truly authentic :)
Omg yes I hate t shirts. Love your videos though! ❤
What about recycled polyester blend sweaters with wool?
I personally avoid them
i can't understand how racerbacks are good for anyone's shoulders ...though i'm a bit perplexed how halter tops work on you (and they do!) but still broaden my own shoulders.
Lol at me who loves 60s and 70s fashion and whose wardrobe is 90% vintage polyester... haha
I love the Curated coats. Could you tell me the style you have?
They're linked in the description of the video xx
also, I've started terming LBD as "little boring dress". Staple, yes probably, but I'm over it.
I'm praying that people don't discover that there are real gems in the second hand clothing market 😂🙌😏🤫🤞🏼
Has anyone see how cashmere is made/sourced?
No polyester or acrylic jumpers for me.
Did you mean Emma Hill?🤣
I find that the less people work in an office the more blazers they buy. Sort of overcompensating imo.
I won’t tell who, but no it’s not Emma! 😄
Lol that’s who I thought of too!
ha, my guess would be lydia tomlinson
@@AthalieM 😂
Personally, I’m allergic to most kinds of whool😅
Uhh I'm sorry! It's not that rare, but it is rough, honestly. Imagine our ancestors who were allergic to wool though. What was their alternative? 😂 Hope you manage without 💪
Are you Dutch?
Danish :)
I found how much I dislike drop shoulder style. This year it is the trend and a sloppy look.
Man kan faktisk købe "fjer armbånd" som man kan tilføje sine ting - tage af og på, alt efter om man ønsker fjer eller ej 😀
Great video right up until the resources of the planet comment. What does that even mean. Saving money buying what makes you feel good is great. It has absolutely nothing to do with the plant.
