The late 90s, the path of totality clipped the south coast of the UK. I drove for hours throughout the night to get to Falmouth to witness it. 100s of people were there. I stood on the harbour wall and watched the darkness speed across the ocean towards me, the light became murky and dim, then black. And as darkness swept over us the sea birds screamed, the noise they made was incredible! Then it all went quiet. And as I watched out to sea, I could see the light coming back behind the shadow. And it was light again.
I am very glad I went, even though I slept in a very small car in a lay by to see it!

I watched that from a park in Brighton - I worked as a printer at the time, so I printed some opaque black transparencies, and doubled them up to use to look at it. (I wouldn't recommend it - just for glances, no more than that).
Everything went quiet, and birds seemed very disturbed. And the shadows of leaves turned into little half-moons - a known phenomena.
Just checked the date, and it was August 11th, 1999 - my birthday! I don't remember it being my birthday, but it was.

Live in Austin and have been excited for months. Constantly bringing it up to people making sure as many people possible were aware of the arrival. Even took the day off from work just to make sure some stupid emergency didnt arise as it starts. Have beer food and lawn chairs ready to go along with aproved glasses and custom box viewer built for just just this moment. Telescope for some other views, maybe the comet? Only problem after lots of nice days monday may be a cloudy day. Im going to ignore that and hope for the best. With just a well timed break in the clouds all will be perfect, experience of a life time. Without leaving my back yard. Of course people are buying all the toilet paper and bottled water like always when something weird happens. Love our paranoid world.

I find people call Venus the North Star more than I could count. How many minds will be blown away when the eclipse surprises them. They will run to get the last of the toilet paper, lol

Also during the solar eclipse of 1868, King Mongkut (Rama IV), The Siamese King well known in The West from the musical The King & I, used his own calculations to pinpoint the time and place of the total eclipse over Siam, 2 years before the event. Before becoming King he'd spent 25 years as a monk during which time he studied Western sciences and maths and when he became King implemented the adoption of these modern techniques. This project was to show the court astrologers that their methods were inaccurate and outdated. He led an expedition of dignitaries to the location that he'd predicted, in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province on The Malay Peninsula. His prediction was the most accurate made, 2 seconds more accurate than the French astronomers in India. Unfortunately he contracted malaria on the expedition and died 9 weeks later. However, he proved to the court the importance of modernisation, which his heir, King Chulalongkorn The Great, made the central policy of his reign. There is an asteroid named after Mongkut in recognition for his importance to the promotion of science.

I was lucky enough to be in the path of totality for the 1999 solar eclipse. A bunch of us travelled a couple hundred miles to Cornwall and stayed on a campsite for the week specifically to see it. It was eerie and magical, even to the most scientifically-minded of us. We know the science and why it occurs, yet it still has the capacity to stir those feelings of wonder and awe. I was able to understand why our ancestors would have been so scared of the phenomenon, especially if it happened witbout them knowing beforehand - it must have been terrifying for them. Thanks Anton for bringing proper science to those of us who missed our calling, either thru circumstance or timing, i really appreciate you ❤

Saw the 2017 eclipse, augmented halfway through totality by hanging out with the Machine Elves (look 'em up) and it was a life-changing experience. I was aiming for a "5" and it went to "11." Words fail, to put it mildly.
It's top of the Bucket List worthy. I waited 10 years for it and it still blew my expectations away. I'm intending to repeat it on Monday (and everyone else should, too) even though I have to hit the road at 3am to make it on time.

…as always a super interesting report. I am making this input now even though I heard Antron’s report just before the 8th to follow up on what I saw and remind myself of the significance of the event. I watched it near Uvalde Tx, and even though it was cloudy, the clouds dissipated just long enough for us to see totality and the Corona etc. One of the most impressive phenomena in my opinion was the approaching darkness which we could see coming in the distance and which becomes absolutely full darkness before fading. The birds began to gather and fly to their nesting points and wild animals came to a nearby pond to drink before retiring.
SinceI am a male almost 80yrs old, it is doubtful I will see the next one over the US.

Great coverage, just in time for this unique event. Since the solar maximum coincides with this eclipse, it would be exciting to look forward to the new discoveries this time. The history of solar eclipses was quite interesting. I can only imagine how scary it would have been to our ancient ancestors to experience the disappearance of the sun all of a sudden. Just to think about the solar eclipse that made Einstein famous just overnight gives me goosebumps. Thank you so much for putting all of this together, Anton.

Hello Anton. I live in Sherbrooke Canada Quebec and I was directly on the totallity trajectory. I was in a small village (Compton) near where I live. Beatifull setting on the top of a hill, perfect spring weather. This was the most strange and beatifull event I have witnessed in my 56 years. I have been preparing for this since 2021. The only downside of this experience is that it lasted only 3 minutes and 27 seconds! Anyway I am seriously considering traveling to repeat this experience.

Actually, the next eclipse over North America, I believe, is in March of 2033 and will pass over Alaska. Which may not matter to most of you, but being as I live in Alaska and can't really get down south for this one, it does matter to me 😊. Greetings from Alaska.

  • @Shaden0040

And John actually in North America you will see city lights when the moon makes the sun go dark Because a lot of the city lights are program to go on when the sun sets which means that they have photovoltaic receptors on the lights that when they go dark they let's switch on the lights and when the sun comes back they will switch on the photo of a tag receptor and switch the lights back off so you will see city lights when the moon passes overhead in the full totality of the Eclipse. granted you won't see house lights come on and workload lights will already be on so the streetlight will come on And you will see them in the darkness. i've seen it happen before. back in the 1970s and 1990s when we had some partial or total eclipses The lights would come on.

Mr. Petrov during the eclipse (which idk why but didn't look at) I noticed the the birds were all hiding under trees. The next day I noticed all the birds hiding under the trees during the noon hour. My conclusion of their behavior during the eclipse and at noon is that is indicative of hiding from predators i.e. the hawks and bigger birds which I have seen prey on the smaller birds. The eclipse presents a shadow from the sky that the birds translate to a preying bird. The sun at noon is the best time for the higher altitude preying birds to find prey. Both instances indicate why the birds hide in the darker shadows during noon and the eclipse.

Listen - 99.99% is NOT a total solar eclipse. It is just not the same phenomena. If you can get to a place of totality it is really worth it. There is a reason people are so effected/affected by the experience. You NEVER see people gasp and cry at a partial eclipse - it happens to a lot of people at a total.
