How to Open CSV Data Files in SPSS

Another common way that researchers store data is in a CSV (comma separated values) file. If your data are already clean, then opening a CSV in IBM SPSS Statistics software is almost as easy as opening an Excel file. If there are any small problems in your data, I will show you how to fix them using the Text Import Wizard.

May i ask. What if i have a former SPSS edition (18) that does not allow csv files? Would you recommend to change the csv to xls ? Would that change anything to the data?
