      Thanks @lawrence hughs. I am currently working on a 'Bentonite Updated' as I am doing bigger 25 Litres tests now to see if 1 or 2 doses is better. Also playing with heat to see how the temperature of the wash can change how it clears. Sadly it will be another 4 or so months before that will be ready to be uploaded.

    That clarity is amazing, that used to be 1% tomato paste! I like to add that Bentonite in many countries is one of the cheapest kinds of kitty litter, and that they predominantly use sodium bentonite, because of its stronger ability to remove odors due to its higher surface area. What that means is if you use ground sodium bentonite, it not just clarifies the mash but it acts a bit like active carbon, removing off smells and flavors as well. The second time you let your bentonite soak for 2 days resulting in it being much more suspended in solution, and thats when you got the epic result. Solution: let your bentonite soak just like you start your yeast for better results

      Hi. With all of the test I have done with bentonite I have not found that you get better results from soaking for more than 24 hours. Some washes needed 1 dose while others two. Some only needed 20 grams, while others 40 grams. I also wouldn't recommend using sodium bentonite. There are two main typed of bentonite, Sodium and Calcium. Both leave behind some of their core structure, meaning either Sodium or Calcium. It is better to have a spirit which has small amounts of calcium rather than small amounts of Sodium in it. Also both types of bentonite will strip colour, odor and taste from the wash, it is not just the Sodium that does that.

    I use bentonite to clear my sugar washes, 1 tsp in 25 litres of wash, and after 3 days I can see to the bottom of it. I have never considered doing it twice, i might give that a go in the future.

      Hi Andy H. I am not sure if two doses are required, or if one single larger dose would be enough. I am doing more tests on 25Litre washes right now to see. I hope to do a follow-up Bentonite video soon.

      Andy, would it be possible that you could email me? You are the first person I have 'met' that uses Bentonite! I would love to find out your technique on mixing it with water and generally your experience of using it. Is that ok? If so, please email me on info@brewingadvice.uk many thanks.

    I tried using baked and powdered egg shells to clear some wine ,it's not as good as bentonite but it dose work , eggshells are just cheaper and like natural, I was thinking about trying it with my mashes one-day

      @@brewingadvice yeah that's one thing about this hobby , plenty of experimentation , lol I'm actually cracking hardshell walnuts to see if I can get them to turn to jelly or like porridge,like how corn dose . I was thinking that there's starch in nuts and there basically big grains so in theory I should be able to convert the starch in the walnuts with malted corn or barley .
      And been thinking about stave's as well ,most of those good whiskies and bourbon you see in channels like whiskey club and whiskey lore seem to be all aged in ex wine and port barrels . my thinking is that I want to prep my oak stave's like a barrel ,I cut a few really thin stave's and put them in a jar with a 50/59 mix of some home made blackberry jam and some 65% sour mash white dog I'll leave it for a few months then see if there's any differences between them and just straight toasted and un prepared oak

    Ive used turbo clear and 24hrs later comes out really good with a slight cloud but works great for me. I have also heard gelatine power" unflavoured" works flawlessly too but haven't tried it. 20g kieselsol and 80g chitosan 👍 put kieselsol in first about hour and then chitosan straight after hour do the same as turbo clear within 24hrs. Buy kieselsol and chitosan in bottles from Amazon that's what I use 👍👍

      The Still Spirits Turbo Clear I really liked. The Alcotec Turbo Klar I did not like. I have heard about Gelatine and spoken to a few who love to use it. The kieselsol and chitosan is the Part A and part B that is in Turbo Clear, it is the same product! I like Bentonite as it doesn't have a use by date like kieselsol and chitosan have. It is also probably the cheapest clearing agent that is out there. It though does take a little perpetration to be able to use it.

      Hi Anthony, This is a good one "Fullers Earth Fine Powder 250g - Pure & Natural Calcium Bentonite", £3.50 for 250g. You will only need 50g per wash. So this bag would do 5 washes. I buy them in 5kg bags which works out even cheaper per wash.

      You go for it! Have a play, I would advise doing two doses of 25g each as I mention in my Bentonite Re-Visited video. Once you are happy with the results, try mixing it up and use 20g doses instead and see if you think that is enough.

    You don't need to add multiple doses. It's a waste. You need to stir it 1-2 times a day for a few days to get it back in suspension.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  Год назад

      Hi dvsmotions, that is a great idea. Could I please ask the below so I can better understand how you do it:
      1. Can you give me an example of the type of wash you do this with (i.e. TPW, Kale).
      2. Is your wash 25 Litres? If not, what size is it?
      3. How much Bentonite do you add (in grams)?
      Thank you

    • @dvsmotions
      @dvsmotions Год назад

      I only make 1 gallon batches of fruit wines. I use about 2 grams of bentonite per gallon. It's very rare I use clearing agents. Much better to let it settle out naturally. The more bentonite you use, the more aroma, flavor and color it will strip out. Some people like to add at the start of fermentation which allows the CO2 bubbles to continuously bring the bentonite from the bottom and keep it in suspension during the fermentation. If you add it post fermentation, you must mix it to keep it in suspension. It does nothing if it sits on the bottom.

    • @dvsmotions
      @dvsmotions Год назад

      Let me also say, I would rather not use a clearing agent if possible. I have used bentonite on ciders that refused to clear but I can live with cloudy ciders. It won't always clear everything.

    • @brewingadvice
      @brewingadvice  Год назад

      @@dvsmotions thank you for replying. You have hit the nail on the head in that it depends on why you want to clear. For me, I am making a neutral spirit, so for it to strip some of the aroma and flavor out while it clears is a great bonus. But yes, for a cider or wine, you want it to clear naturally and keep everything. My current wash finished today, so I will leave it until the weekend to degas it. I will then add bentonite & will stir it twice a day for 4 days, then let it settle for 4 days. Let's see how it clears. Again, thank you very much for discussing this.

      Hi Vinayak,
      1. Bentonite Clay is often Bentonite Powder, but called clay. Some though have been hydrated so that it can be used as a face mask (typically).
      2. Sorry, I am not sure what you are asking here.
      3. If you buy Bentonite that has been declared as food safe, then yes.
