This is my version of an unforgettable great classic from the mid 80s: Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat (of 1984).
I've always loved how this song starts with those pads and the DX7's signature harp... it always gave me goosebumps!! Furthermore, Sommerville's voice is truly fantastic with his unmistakable timbre.
I recreated the track by making some changes to the sounds and in particular to the management of the instruments, creating more stereo effect. I used the CS1x for brass, strings and synthesized trumpet. For the harp, I used the VST Dexed and the VST Jupiter-8 for the bass.
For the graphics of the video, I was inspired by the artwork of their first album "The Age Of Consent".

I dedicate this great success of the Bronski Beat to: pascal Pouvreau, Nigel Bagguley and Antoni Dobrzański, who made me this request and to all the fans of the 80s. I also want to dedicate it to Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek who unfortunately passed away :( and to Jimmy Somerville for his incredible talent! I hope you like it :)
KOSmusic, amazing as always!!! Hope you are doing great!! I haven't seen anything from you recently and I haven't yet checked to see if I'm just not getting notifications, but I was getting a little concerned about ya and been meaning to check in on ya and just say, "Hi!". Just wanted to remind you that you make some killer stuff! My favorite is still the Airwolf cover however. I use it as a fun test whenever I test out something I've changed to my setup (usually a couple times a week actually), but I LOVE the crisp audio, but the visuals just make me grin and look awesome on the 2 - 12+ foot screens on 2 of my living room walls.... It's great to crank up and let the helicopter sounds begin to rattle things on my shelves, then the beat kicks in and a few things decide to hit the dance floor and boogie down. lol You take care my friend and I hope you and your friends / family are great.... Keep up the AWESOME work so I can keep being forced to work on stuff as you make me blow speakers or an amp or two because I have no choice, but to crank it up! ;-) Have a great day!!

You have no idea what you just did, being born in 1968, I was a child of the 80s, it was the best time in the most terrifying time of my life, because I was also gay. I grew up a privileged white kid in Toronto suburbia, grappling with my sexuality, terrified to tell anyone, convinced that would be either killed, been kicked out of the house, or commit suicide. But then Jimmy Somerville came out with this song, and it changed my entire life forever! So many mixed emotions, at first, terror, but after an epiphany, thanks to this song, pure joy! Please never stop doing what you’re doing, you’re incredible! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
It is really a great joy for me to read your beautiful comment!!! Unfortunately in those years there was a lot of hostility and they were not very understanding. My wife and I have always had the same idea... everyone is free to make his own choices and live his life as he wants. Certainly many artists made a great contribution to many themes through their songs and music videos… and it was this true passion that led to creating masterpieces that would last forever. Personally, I only love the music of the past because it was created by people who really had something to say with their art and they had real talent (like Michael Jackson for example) and didn't just think about money and fame like today unfortunately :/ I'm so happy that you like what I do with these classics!!! Changed my life too :-) I remember when I was at college just at the time Bronski Beat released Smalltown Boy, before any music videos and with very little fanfare in the UK. I went to see them at a dingy little club in Essex. Im not gay, but it changed my whole outlook on music and culture, opening odds of appreciation that a young man growing up in rural UK would never see. To this day it's one of the best sounds of the 80's or indeed any time, and thanks @KOSmusicovers for a fantastic version.
By 1980, you would be classed as a teenager, not a child, and by 1989, an adult.

I came from a very poor and poverty stricken Northern town in the UK. As a white gay teenager, with a single parent mother who was only just able to treat me and my brother with a chocolate bar every few months it was extremely tough. I did anything for money aged 13, from car washing, sweeping the streets and walking dogs just to pay for basic clothes and food because my mum just couldn't afford anything. I used to get home and tape this song from the radio and listened to it over and over again. My town had a population of 120,000 99.9% of these people where white it was a struggle, most lost fishing jobs due to EU regulations and coal mining jobs was ending, most of the men was living on social security at just £31 per week no other jobs existed apart from a few seasonal seaside jobs but thousands of people wanted these. I remember seeing so many people going into fish and chip shops in the early 90's asking for a free bag of scraps just to stay alive. I also remember my friends walking the streets in bare feet because things where so bad for the forgotten Northern white populations.
Brought tears to my eyes. I would have killed to have had instrumental versions this flawless to mix with the vocal 12” versions when I was DJing in clubs in the ‘80s.

I first heard this when traveling in Europe in early 80s. As soon as I returned to USA I scrambled over to a little record store and found the LP. Played it for my friends and we were all hooked. One of the greatest. I got to hang out with Jimmy about a year later. He was so much fun. Absolute Prince of a guy!

I left school in 82 and lived the life throughout the 80s, the clothes, the hair and above all the music. Music like this masterpiece.....

1984 kicked butt on damn near every front. Ronald Reagan won his second term as president in a landslide. Phenomenal music, movies, TV shows and toys for kids. 1989 was also a pretty stacked year for good movies. "Batman", "Back to the Future Part II", " Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" are just some of the hits released that year.
Love it- Steve Bronski aka Steven Forrest was born in Castlemilk in Glasgow I grew up a few miles away from him.

The New Wave music of this era had a surreal quality. Made you feel like you were living in a movie. Never been a sound like it before or since. The only song I ever heard that truly sounded like it was from the 80s is Mr. Kitty's 'After Dark'. Like a cross between Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys. Totally shocked to learn it was released in 2014.

I have always thought that when each of us makes an interpretation of a great classic, it gives it something different and unique (obviously I'm talking about works done with passion/commitment/competence and not rough versions done just to do) and I have always found your creations absolutely top notch!!!! Moreover, as I have always written to you on your videos (and as "Dancing with the Dogs DJ" rightly told you), you must never stop following your great passion for music... if anything, who should stop are the pseudo musicians who ruin the great classics and deceive those who go to see their videos, where there are bad versions created just to attract audiences/to make visualizations and not you who have done great works including "War"/"Training Montage" of the great Vince DiCola, which I personally have always considered two very complex tracks to be recreated in every part and I admire you very much for being able to recreate them so well!! I find it amazing how this song has touched so many generations. I am no oldie, I'm 17. However growing up where I did, I had a hard time coming to terms with my sexuality. This song touched me in a way I could never describe. It got me through a lot. If you are going through similar, I hope nothing but the best for you!

I was a teenager in the 1980s and I looked forward to new songs on a Sunday. I taped the top 40 but the dam DJs always talked over the start of a tune.
Tunes back then were very danceable and I loved skating to them at the local YMCA. You've done a brilliant job, my friend, thanks.

I VST che ho usato in questa traccia sono stati principalmente: Dexed (in particolare per l'arpa) e lo Jupiter-8 dell’Arturia (per il basso). Mentre per i brass, strings e il leggero solista di tromba sintetizzata, ho utilizzato il mio CS1x :)
@@KOSmusicovers Polistrumentista, ma non sono bravo come te. Me la cavo abbastanza bene con il basso e un po' con la chitarra, ma sulla tastiera tu sei troppo bravo. Io principalmente suono reggae elettronico ma ho in testa un sacco di brani synthwave. L'ispirazione comunque credo sia in comune (Jan Hammer è un nome tra tanti). Grazie per le dritte sui VST, cercavo proprio un suono simile! :)

Was born in '99 but grew up hearing all of these hits from my dad who still had them on cassette tapes. This song is his favorite

questi artisti anni '80 sono stati i veri rivoluzionari è grazie al loro talento, al loro coraggio ed alla loro visibilità che un mondo sommerso fatto anche di tanta sofferenza si è palesato, portando poi alla parità di diritti civili ... non erano volgari non erano arroganti ma solo persone di grande cuore...
Assolutamente d'accordo con tutto!!! Ho sempre avuto questo pensiero e la passione si può sentire attraverso le loro canzoni e i loro testi profondi. Passione, talento, competenza e voglia di trasmettere emozioni con musica di estrema qualità sotto ogni punto di vista (inclusi video musicali pazzeschi). Esattamente l'inverso di quella di oggi... pseudo musica senza senso, testi adolescenziali e inconsistenti, pseudo cantanti che usano effetti esasperati come "auto-tune" e "pitch shifter" perché non hanno veramente imparato a cantare, video musicali ripetitivi con inquadrature orribili e potrei andare avanti all'infinito con le critiche. Diciamo che per inventarsi qualcosa di nuovo oggi, hanno dovuto creare uno stile che mai sarebbe esistito in passato, perché a nessun artista/compositore si sarebbe sognato di creare porcherie del genere, di metterle alla radio o di venderle. Oggi, il 98% degli pseudo artisti pensano solo alla fama, ai soldi e ad apparire... ed è per questo che la musica (ma anche altri campi come film, tele film, ecc.) non sanno di niente. Ovviamente tutto questo è la mia opinione personale basata sulle sensazioni che provo in questo mondo ormai così diverso dai bei tempi che ho vissuto fino a metà del 2000, poi pian piano il mondo si è rovinato :(

I think the hardest thing about getting this cover right is the drum sound.I think its a DMX,fantastic snare.Great job on the cover,long live the CS1x

Here we dont talk about keeping the original orchestration only but being very accurate about the exact sound of the track. I think Steve Brosnki would be proud of this remake. I had the chance to work with him and i know quite a few things about the original production, was working on my version for three months never got a release due to copyright issues but no worries since i had the chance to connect with Steve (RIP).Well done, now i am on the lookout for a cs 1x which back then didnt like at all and sold it in a week.
