    One of my all time favourite albums, Black Noise. Rest in Peace Mr. Jeff Plewman, aka Nash the Slash. Your talent will never be forgotten.

    I just discovered this album a few years ago, I had only heard Phasors On Stun, but not the rest of the album. Amazing! I play it all the time now. RIP Nash the Slash

    The first time I saw Nash the slash was with the bandages. I thought he was a burn victim who thought it better to not show his face because of how so many would react to it. Of course I was wrong.
    I miss that man!

    That's correct. This is a TVOntario show called Night Music. If I remember correctly, FM appeared on 2 occasions - both were recorded with just Hawkins and Nash before Deller joined the band.
    It's fantastic to see this again after all these years - many thanks to the uploader. Seeing things like again is why I love RUclips.

    Never heard of these. I liked Nash when i was a kid (punk period) and i was looking up some old bands like caberet voltaire, led me to Nash, then here. Well, i can say that these were fu**ing awesome together. So raw and so much talent. We've had some fantastic decades for music. Alas, the wells are almost dry now.

    this looks to me like that TVO special I saw when I first came to Canada in '76-'77. A very impressionable young teenager was forever changed into an eclectic music fan because of FM and Nash the Slash, who I saw couple of years later live at The Edge. If I remember correctly, there was another TVO special with Rough Trade around the same time.

    Remember first watching this on Ontario Canada's TVO (TV Ontario) channel from Toronto, Ontario. Canada. This was our first exposure to FM who at the time only had Jeff Plewman later known as Nash The Slash (Not yet in the bandages and hat we know him for) playing the electric mandolin. He also played the electric violin and keyboards as well. And Cameron Hawkins playing the main keyboard. Martin Deller was later to join the group known as FM.

      I in fact just remember now the show was called "Night Music" that featured various musical artists and they showed the show on either Friday or Saturday nights if I recall correctly. Nash The Slash R.I.P. Sad to hear of his passing. Saw Nash a number of times when he was in Ottawa to do some concerts in the past. Got to meet him personally and got his autograph at the time. Nice straightforward person.

    MMMMMUSIC that seemingly would be IMPOSSIBLE to play live is here realized with BRAVURRRRA out the ying-yang! Nash the Slash has by now blasted his way into a black hole of indeterminate depth and destination but his magnificent music and slant on musical theory will never be stilled. This is complexity that will bring textures of musical joy beyond all bounds of comprehension no matter how many times you re-listen. Lift off now and you will never regret it. GREATNESS INCARNATE.

    • @davidkirby5044
      @davidkirby5044 10 лет назад +2

      Hey, Boris. There are many musics for many moods but for the most part I have always preferred music that is pure energy. The music of Black Noise attains that goal and why should not that be celebrated?

  • @johnbridgman4310
    @johnbridgman4310 3 года назад +5

    This seems to be the best surviving recording of Black Noise, better even than the one on Lost In Space. I first saw FM at York University before the FM name (as far as I know); they were performing as "Nash the Slash and Cameron Hawkins". It was truly life-changing... some of the best and most powerful music I ever heard. I didn't count but have probably heard them perform live 20 or 30 times... they were that good.
    I would still argue even today that the "Elka string synth running through the MiniMoog external input" sequence starting at 6:25 counts as the greatest synthesizer patch of all time.
    There was a performance we recorded off-the-air which I still think of as the definitive FM sound (CHUM-FM Night at 11 ?) that was arguably better than any surviving recordings I have heard, but that recording died after a few generations and maybe a dozen copies and we were never able to find anything like a master tape.
    The other song that hardly ever got recorded as well as a live performance was One O'Clock Tomorrow. In the live performances Jeff would double-track the mandolin solo live with an echoplex... other than the Night at 11 broadcast and the Lost in Space CD I don't think that was ever captured in a recording.

    Such a gift to be able to make great music, it's ultra phenomenal, I first saw these guys when they opened for Rush in 1979 at Varsity Stadium in Toronto and had no idea, I was witnessing one of the great artists in action. Martin Dellar was the drummer. To clear up any confussion Neil Peart was not introduced to Rush through any member of FM, their relationship was forged several years down the road. During the 9 Mile Island nuclear disaster in the US, Nash put on some luminecent (sic) bandages to protest the nuclear industry for a show. They were so well received that he kept using them. Minus the luminecent stuff. About 10 years before their time.

    Whenever i see these music videos, i get angry for some reason. Probably because of the overall treatment of canadian bands at the time and a decade or so after. Some of the greatest canadian bands came from that time like rush and fm to name just a few. While rush enjoyed commercial success, they were still treated like the Rodney Dangerfields of music. I loved rush and fm, but in fm's case, we were robbed of many more yrs of good music. *sigh* time to enjoy this wonderful music video.

      No. It is Nash the Slash. He was already a solo artist and he and Cameron Hawkins formed FM. Nash went back to his solo career shortly after that and Ben Mink stepped in to replace him in FM.
