DIY Pressure Chamber & Safety Considerations

  • After my last video on the Cherry & Resin Rolling Pin, there was enough interest in my homemade pressure chamber that I decided rather than having people copy the idea and potentially doing it wrong, I would share the multiple and redundant safety precautions I took when building and using mine.

    While pvc may be able to hold a lot of pressure its not meant to be pressurised and depressurised multiple times. It will eventually break causing hard jagged sharp pieces to fly off. It's essentially a jack in the box pipe bomb.

    Great video, Mark! You explained it all so well. And I think it was important how you noted that even though there was still a small leak, it was not a failure. It would hold the pressure long enough for what you’re doing. I think too often, I think if I don’t build something strong enough for a tank to run over it, it is a failure. But if it is more than plenty for your application, good enough. Thanks for the reminder!

    I like your high preassure popoff. I am planning to make something very similar to this for dispensing whiskey using a schrader valve to air add pressure. My bicycle pump will fill to over 130 PSI, so having a popoff valve seems like a great idea.

    Great walk through. To find the slow leak either use soap in a spray bottle like they use for natural gas, or submerge the entire thing in a bathtub to find the bubbles. Excellent video!

    I was being trained on irrigation blowouts, the guy made a mistake, forgot to shut off the pump start, so the line never was clearing. So instead of shutting the compressor down, he tried to be quick. 3” pvc main line, down about 20 inches ruptured at 150 psi, it blew upwards, loud boom heaved the road, and caused soil to fly in the air. Fu times, you did a great job.

    Well done buddy. I don't know why so many people go on about not using pvc pipe for these things. They have HUGE burst pressure ratings. Like you said, you only need 35-40 psi which is well under virtually all pvc pipe..... But yes, it's better to get screw on end caps rather than glue them

    Quick question - what stops the open end (where you insert your work) from blowing off when you add the pressure? Is the thread on the lid + tape sufficient to keep it on?

    Man i was waiting for such a vid to be on RUclips i was so interested to make a pressure pot by myself in the beginning of 2018 for my epoxy projects and i thought about pvc but yet again i couldn't trust it enough but after tgis vid i am gonna give it a try tysm

    Hey Mark, great video, use an o-ring at the screw end, that way you don’t have to seal at the thread.

    Quick note like your safety tests, however, by filling your tube with water first then adding your air pressure the amount of stored energy is very little compared to the tube full of air, in case of a catastrophic failure. keep up your videos.

    How did you seal the top cap. I tried using teflon tape but I lose pressure as soon as I get around 10psi

    I really like this idea. I'm wanting to do some hybrid epoxy and burled table legs for a MCM inspired design. This would help me out tremendously, and still work just fine for pen blanks and smaller items.

    I have built a chamber exactly like this one. I cannot get it to seal air tight. Where the cap scews in it keeps losing air. Any advice? How did you get yours to stop leaking air

    The pressure your using should never be a problem. The off gasing of the epoxy resins could breakdown the pvc over very long periods. The rating is based on time as well as pressure. Leaving the pvc at the max pressure for extended periods could fatigue it.

    1. The pressure is for water not air, air is worse.
    2. the pressure rating is for the pipe itself, but you introduce all sorts of fittings and other interruptions in the material
    3. the pressure rating does not say anything about changing pressures back and forth.
    So there si still stuff than can go wrong, however your safety net is pretty big which is good, stay safe guys.

    Thanks so much for sharing this, I've been looking for ages. Quick question, did you even manage to get it fully leak free? I'm making one now and struggling, but I swear there must be a way. Cheers mate.

      Grommets, bolts, lock nuts, and washers for all parts. All ends must be able to screw on and the threads coated with glue so that there is no chance of air flowing through a thread. Using soap and water will detect where a leak is at because of the bubbles that can be seen.

    You could possibly use a clamp from end to end which should lessen or prevent the end cap failure. Just a thought.

      That would be a possibility. Another good precaution would be to throw a heavy moving blanket on top of it while it use. Then if something badd happened, the blanket would contain all the debris and let the air pass through.

    I like your build. Out of curiosity, why not use something like a cheap pressure cooker? Seems like that’s a pressure vessel that might be cheaper than even schedule 40 pipe.

    I have a vacuum machine for doing my frozen food and have found it’s also perfect in the workshop so I now have one in the workshop which is a bit bigger than my kitchen one 😹😹😹 but I love the pressure chamber as it should work just as well as a vacuum chamber as well. As for the pressure chamber I know someone who can make me one that will be safe 😹😹😹as they make the chambers for the machines 😹😹😹 so as they say I can not go wrong there 😹😹😹😹

    ""URGENT WARNING"" Schedule 40 comes in 2 Types of pipe 1). Foam Core NOT TO BE USED FOR PRESSURE 2). Pressure Tested
    The pipe must be posted with the PSI Rating on it. Foam Core or Cellular Core, States Non-Pressure Only.

      @@Dougwoz1 the structure of the pipe walls are not solid they are more like a honeycomb and can allow air to pass through the walls causing blow out or bursting. I have seen the results of 10" pvc sch 80 blown apart in person. It is not something you want happening anywhere near you or your family. Shards of pipe went through cars 30 feet away. We were almost in the path had we shown up ten minuets early to work that day.

    Interestingly, a normal disposable water bottle (try the 2 liter type) can withstand up to 150 psi or 10 atmospheres. This is easily double or triple what you need to do resin casting. You could make a resin casting chamber out of such a bottle. May not work for long, though.

      The main issue is the cap is narrow and that's mostly why it can hold so much pressure. PSI is pounds per square inch and a 2L bottle cap has about 1 square inch - a chamber you could actually fit something into would be at least 10 square inches at the opening so it has 10x the force on the seal

    A friend gave me some schedule 80 pipe that I was going to use for this, but after seeing what your setup is capable of performing, I think I'll skip that. I can buy all the schedule 40 pieces and fittings for less than it would cost for the sched 80 end caps...that I have to buy online because they don't carry it locally.

      I looked at schedule 80 and decided it was overkill for the pressures I needed. If you thought you wanted to push to higher pressures, then 80 started to look pretty appealing.

    The concern with compressed air and PVC is time. Over time the PVC will become brittle. At some point it WILL rupture and send shrapnel everywhere. Excellent setup, but please understand the PVC WILL FAIL at some point in time.

      I've been using Alumilite. I don't have a store, but you can find it on Amazon, or on Alumilite's website.

    Use a soapy water solution to check for air leaks. My guess is the safety isn't resealing 100% after tripping. The seat might need to be lapped with a lapping compound to resurface the seat to seal 100%.

    Rather than teflon tape on the screw cap you might try a large oring. Reusable and can be a better seal.

    Great build, great idea. I didn't see you use pipe glue just the purple primer? While the primer will act as a glue a little it won't hold like the glue will. Thanks for sharing this video!

      I did use pipe glue - the bottle was there in one of the shots. But once the pipe turns purple, its hard to see the clear glue.

      Think you mean the stuff use to “prime” is just a cleaner as a chemist happen yo know chemistry, it’s just cleaning grease, oils from hand, acetone will do, not sure of chemicals and temperature in these gasses especially, don’t know projects. You need to be careful with chemistry pvc is great if not heated or chemistry inert. Pressure fine, brass fittings issue and pipe cement. Teflon is super resistant vinyls tephons better. Other folks this is not an acid base or gas pressure vessel. They make reaction vessels for that purpose from super safe to insane furnaces. Please be wary of limitations on heat and chemistry, type pipe. Wall thickness plastic type to temperature. Epoxy as in 2 part you maybe should double check and vent outside. That’s toxic if even standard. This is not sutable for reaction chamber, if looking up chemistry use. I know someone will. Awesome share don’t want brass firing off as projectile 40 psi is tire safe. 100 in truck tire has shot rims off trucks and killed. Great video and effort. I have no idea fumes effect. Inspect double check if use often, please.

    I want to say thanks. I originally bought a Harbor Freight pressure pot to use for casting, but I have read horror story after horror story of them failing catastrophically (returning it this weekend). I think this will be a much safer way to go.

    A small leak that bleeds the pressure is still a weak point which could eventually lead to a sudden failure that could be a sudden and violent. You should find the leak now before it becomes a problem.

    One form of safety on this set up is not enough. The initial safety device should be a separate tapping with an adjustable electric pressure cut off which operates a shut off valve on you air supply. That way you can automatically set the air pressure. A spring loaded safety valve is the final tier of control should all else fail. You are using it as your only fail safe device.

    Weak link here is tapping the cap for the various fittings. It is fine to tap the cap, but the interior should have had a washer and nut holding the fittings (so really the cap does not need to be tapped). With only pvc for thread material you no longer have any idea of max pressure. Sure at 30 -40 psi it will “probably “ hold, but if the safety valve shoots out, even 40 psi has a lot of stored energy, and the valve could shoot pretty hard.

      Could be, I didn't need it to hold more than about 10 minutes for my resin to cure, so I didn't bother to diagnose the problem.

    Okay, guys, one more time: TEFLON TAPE OR SEALANT IS NOT FOR MAKING THE PIPES SEAL! IT DOES THAT NATURALLY.
    Pipe dope and teflon tape are for cutting FRICTION, so they will naturally screw together as intended. It's also for getting them apart again, later. Actually, if you want to put SOMETHING on the pipe threads going into PVC, use some glue: it would certainly help the thread/plastic interface.

    Never pressure test chamber with out putting water in it until it comes out the air input connection because water does not compress, but air will.

    PVC,CPVC,and PEX are not rated for air pressure, the pipe can and will explode at any time. The pipe companies all have videos on you tube, go watch them.

    LISTEN TO THIS MAN! I used to work in a PVC factory. We made and did burst tests on up to 24" schedule 80 pipe and fittings.
    Pressurised PVC explosions are as bad or in some instances WORSE than a real grenade.
    I mostly fooled with 1' diameter scheduale 80 PVC molding fittings. When the bosses were gone rather than waste the time cutting them up with saws to recycle bad parts we would take a pallet load at a time roughly 3 stories up and just toss then onto the concrete floor. They'd grenade into razor sharp baseball sized pieces or less.
    That said this guy using 40psi is less than half of the recomended pressure recomended from the factory. I've seen many people use it to run 120psi air lines in their shops. Don't do it since UV damages pvc. But at 40psi with a pop off you should be just fine.
    Personally though it terrifies me and i need about a 10" diameter and 100psi. I'm doing basically the exact same thing he did but running 300 feet of air line to it and keeping the valves and guages in a separate building 275 feet or so away. With a 3/4" plywood sheet leaned against the wall for good measure.
    Pvc is no joke. Especially if it is cold.
    PROTIP: you can fill a pvc drain pipe with salt and bend it wherever you want it to go with a torch or by throwing it in the oven. I can't remember the exact temperature but i have made about 200 pvc fittings and only ever had 1 leak. It beats an hour drive to the hardware store.

    Do not use PVC to make air pressure tanks !!
    I made one and it exploded me to only 2 Pressure Bars. I was lucky and only hurt a finger, but it could have been the face or who knows. It is very dangerous to work with air and use plastic. Buy an 8L painter's pot, it's made of metal and comes prepared for it.

      Did you use PVC schedule 40? How many times you used it before it exploded? How much time was your pressure tank pressurized before it failed? Was a cap that detached or the tube exploded by the middle?
      I'm making a 50cm long pvc pressure tank right now with this precise instructions to use it at 40 psi with very small projects, I just need to have it pressurized for about 10 minutes for each project and if you answer my questions about your experience you will help me a lot.

      @@AlienArteStoreMX I used it less than 8 times. The first few times I wanted to see how it reacted to 1bar. I had to seal the thread of the lid with Teflon better until it was completely hermetic. Then it went up to about 1.8bar and exploded. He did it by the part of the lid breaking into pieces. I do not remember the schedule but buy one for strong water pressure. As I said ... do not use plastic for air pressures. It's logic

      @@sergiopz8542 I know about your warning on plastics and air pressure, I already have all materials and PVC sch 40 seems damn strong and heavy, one would think 40 psi isn't strong enough for breaking it, but who knows. I'll have more precautions making tests next week. I hope you didn't hurt bad. Thank you for your answer

    Interestingly, an ordinary water bottle (say, 1 liter) can handle up to ten atmospheres of pressure. I have seen 8 atmospheres here on youtube. That is 150 and 120 psi respectively.
