By then maybe we will actually see some burning. All we see now if people shouting it's burning and then saying it's running like normal for them. Right now it really seems like wishful thinking. I don't use it and I dislike it. I would like it gone, but for something so on fire, it seems like everyone is still using it and having no issues... and if the numbers are right, they are singing up more users and having more interactions then before. That is not exactly the burning I was looking for.

The insulin thing is even funnier when you consider the fact that Frederick Banting discovered insulin in 1923, refused to put his name on the patent. He felt it was unethical for a doctor to profit from a discovery that would save lives. Banting’s co-inventors, James Collip and Charles Best, sold the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for a $1. They wanted everyone who needed their medication to be able to afford it.

Couple of thoughts. I was an engineer for SpaceX for 4 years. I'm not a fan of Elon Musk whatsoever but there are some key take away's here. With that being said, when Elon fires multiple thousands of people it isn't the way everyone is claiming. When another BIG BUSINESS in general, any big business "at least for the companies I have worked for. Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop, SpaceX" takes over, the normal case is: Cancel every bodies badge, every single employee except for those absolutely necessary and kick them out of the building. This prevents internal sabotage of documents or equipment from upset employees. They will then send you an email over the weekend if you are still employed. They issue new clearance badges and have a new orientation for those that are coming back with a summary of the big changes and BGO's "business goals and objectives". They don't just "fire" people like everyone is claiming they were. So all those people that were asked to come back, were not fired they were deemed essential and simply told they are still employed.
Also, Elon didn't create Tesla he bought and kicked out the CEO's via monopoly.
Tesla was created by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning in 2003. Elon bought them out as a majority share holder and kicked them out essentially.
SpaceX on the other hand was financed by Elon "which is pretty cool" but he had 0 input on any implementation or ideas. Originally he tried to buy old Russian ICBM's to use as a foundation for lack of better words. He then funded the original 13 engineers who already had been working on the idea for quite a while when he realized the raw material cost of building the rocket was merely a fraction of what payload launch cost and a final assembled vehicle would actualize. If it wasn't for those brilliant original engineers who have an extreme passion and talent he would have been going nowhere.
Point being, money can give you a lot more opportunities than would otherwise and it makes failures that much easier to absorb. So with regards to Twitter, he'll be absolutely fine since he has enough finance to absorb the blow and he will find passion project people who don't mind the longer hours or grueling work load as I once did. Hence why he offers stock options that vest over X amount of years. Hire all the brilliant engineers at the beginning of a project, offer stocks that vest, "mine took 4 years to vest and I left immediately after for a better work/life balance job" the overall project core structure is complete, now you can simply hire scrubs just coming out of college to "maintain" design implementation without any real core design. AKA revision changes.

@@FractalPrism. Yes, that is essentially how large lay-off's work. You are not fired, you are laid-off until further notice. Often times they even draft contracts that states "if you are deemed essential by signing this notice you agree that you will be contacted/contracted out for any pertinent information required." I've seen these terms drafted anywhere from 1 week to a year based on the intellectual property involved. There is no way they could have drafted 3,000+ firing letters and terms for un-employment for each and every individual. This takes time. Hence the above. I'm sure they wrote a blatant internal email CC'd to all, that if you aren't offered a position back you will be offered X severance package. Therefore mass hysteria ensued and everyone thinking they're fired. How do I know this? Well, Elon did the same thing at SpaceX when I was there. Over 2,000 of us and this was that exact case when he was trying to move production over to the starship location in Boca Chica.

@@Wattss40 Here's what I think needed and still needs to happen at Twitter:
1.) Cut a massive portion of staff, while still keeping the site functioning optimally. It was blatantly clear that they were extremely overstaffed.
2.) Invite any form of innovation, which none of the previous management had managed to do in a better part of a decade.
3.) Find a good moderation middle ground that re-assures clients to invest in future marketing. A person can only hope that the moderation council he's building is able to get this right.
4.) Finally make it a viable platform for healthy debate for both sides of an ever-increasingly politically-divisive country while keeping out hate speech. The moderation and algorithmic function of the platform has always leaned to the left politically and the ideal is to have it as close to the center as possible.
5.) Finally find a way to better protect user's PII. The previous management have at best done a terrible job of protecting it, or just blatantly sold it off without telling anyone.
6.) Find methods to get rid of bots, see what you're left with and build from there.

Knowing that fact, Elon decide to buy Twitter right away before the court force him and before the company was worth less than the amount that he had to pay due to the legal battle drama. Let's not forget the legal fee too.

Just an FYI from a software engineer: a service like Twitter can run relatively fine even with a skeleton crew... until it doesn't. And when an unexpected issue emerges (and it is a when, not an if) you better hope that you didn't kick possibly the only people who know how a certain part of your spaghetti operates when you decided to kick off half of the workforce randomly. From my point of view saying "Twitter has worked just fine for me lol" after the layoffs is a very bad take.

    • @HyperMario64
      @HyperMario64 Год назад

I have quite a mitigated take on this, there has to be some competent people left in. These issues are complex enough for the existing team to make them exist by mistake. Knowledge of a codebase may even works against you in tricky cases. In general laying off half the workforce of engineers, you should be fine maintaining a software. Having new features and stuff? May get into the way of that. For now it's fine. There are still people that really give a damn at Twitter, and that's what you need to keep the product afloat. The 20/80 rule as always.

It's less income, because the 99% don't have as much money to throw around as the 1%, but it also means a lower overhead cost because they can fire all the censors, commissars, "safety boards" and other such bloat. This is also why so many corporations are not responsive to their customers -- when they get most of their money from advertisers, investors, and other top-down sources, they do the things big money wants for the customers, not what the customers want. I think he's going back to the old school tech company style, like how in the late '90's-early '00's they were actually cool, they would "move fast and break stuff" without being bogged down by corporate bureaucracy.

It is why his rockets improve far faster than other American companies, because he isn’t afraid to lose a rocket to speed up improvement. I think a lot of people have never known what happens when a company is bought out. A lot of times a company is purchased and it is divided up and sold off in pieces. Other times a company that is running well is left pretty much to it’s devices but they enhance it. And I think this is a classic example of over half of the company needed to be completely revamped and reworked. The difference here is usually most of these kind of things are happening behind the walls of a building and going on outside of the public eye without a stopwatch. Because of what Twitter is, everybody is seeing it (or thinks they are lol) But I honestly laugh at people who think he doesn’t know what he’s doing. They don’t see the endgame and they don’t see the steps and phases that are not going to happen overnight like instant pudding to get there. Anything as big and complicated as Twitter is not going to be remedied overnight and honestly with some of the messages they had going with child porn along with the censorship, it’s ridiculous to think that could all be fixed so quickly. The people who were screaming the loudest are the people who were enjoying the censorship in my opinion which kept them in their cocoon of never really hearing an opposing view. A lot of people stepped away from Twitter because that’s all it was. Now they are coming back and honestly I’m enjoying it more.

A lot of the things that Elon did makes too much risks to my comfort, and whether Twitter will sink or not will be a slow process, so I'd rather not have anything that risks that shit.
Also, as a former fan of Musk, I do think he _was_ smart. But I think he's letting too much of his ego get to him. Just because you're smart at one thing, doesn't mean you're smart at another thing. Elon was smart, because as he said back then, he works a lot and absorbs a lot of knowledge from his subordinates. I'm not sure if he's doing that now. Being 'smart' is a constant process, and being smart doesn't guarantee you'll make the right decision every time. I don't think he's making the right decisions with Twitter, and I don't think he's still as smart as he was back then.
