For a hobbyist beek with the hornet pressure could you build a hoop over the hives with netting. If the netting holes are small enough to keep the hornets out but the bees could get through. I'm not sure how far away the netting would have to be to make the bees feel comfortable. Just some ideas.
Glad you have a solution to deal with those hornets. It's amazing that the pressure is so high even with all the trapping you do 😥 By cane sugar do you mean the purified white sucrose sugar or the brown sugar variant? (pure white sugar is better because there is less roughage in it, makes it easier on the bees guts.) I've seen Bob's presentation about sucrose and fructose, that both are good but must be used at specific times of the year.
I don’t believe it matters whether your sucrose source is cane sugar or beet sugar. I think Ian steppler is using beet sugar syrup since it is cheaper because it is grown in Canada.
Great video. I make all my patties up in half pound patties it works out great size . The Bees eat that size fast enough to keep the beetles out . THANKS
@@richardnoel3141 I was an organic sourdough baker in a past life and I still have the 80 quart Hobart Mixer and I have been mixing up 150 lb batches in there. It works great but the part I really like about Ian's is how it can be so easily packaged. There is a lot of work involved in getting 150 pounds of this patty material out of that 80 quart bowl. Thank you so much for all the great things you teach us!
How early in the spring do you put out the hornet traps? Can you make several extra traps over the winter and maybe bigger traps to put out earlier in the spring to get the new hornet queens to lower their populations in the summer? I have done that for yellowjackets with good luck.
Hi, I did the same but one bag left , soon to be all used up. Next year will be a challenge. I kept what I had because spring was so good so I have time to find some for next year. There is one place that imports it but it’s in Spain. Same stuff. www.latiendadelapicultor.com/en/protein-pollen-subs/ultra-bee-dry-50lb.html Crazy price now. Someone in Europe needs to import it in bulk
I was under the impression that molasses will kill honey bees because it has too many solids. Maybe it's a different kind of molasses than what is here in the states?
Hi yes I agree but only if you feed your bees in winter. If your feeding while they are still producing brood it’s fine, we still have about 5 weeks of brood production
Get them ramped up before your fall flow starts.. price of sugar no joke.. Im leaving the fall flow on.. bottom box plugged up with pollen hard to say when they will shut down..
Sirdo, 🤔 Cane sugar can give the bees diarhea so be cateful. The marmite works well 😋. I usually feel the syrup between the thumb and index finger to get correct sense of the thickness which is right and won't cause the bees stomach or ingestation problems. I know if it is good for me it's good for the bees, thanks to the chef for a job well done 😋 😋 🤣 👋.
Cane sugar is the sugar everyone uses for feeding bees. It doesn't give them dissentary unless it has been cooked. Making sugar water with just hot water and adding the cane sugar and stir to dissolve. Just don't boil sugar water, only boil the water.
don't sleep, go after them ruclips.net/video/Y7PR1FtWfwU/видео.html make something like that put it out at fall and spring, kill the queens tray to find a nest don't sit on your bath, work harder sorry for my english, i am from Latvia
Love that music. Really cool.

The bees will stop at the netting, to crawl through, the hornets will catch them there
It is an interesting idea, a sort of chicken coop
bonjour richard , j utilise ce produit depuis 2 ans , c est un excellent apport pour nos abeilles .
merci pour le partage, bonne continuation a toi

Richard you should bring out a diet book. The honey bee diet. Honey,Pollen patties, sugar syrup and Royal jelly.
I am the last person who should be doing that!
Great video yet again, very well explained well. No fluff just to the point. Regarding Marmite, you either love it or hate it. "It is what it is".😂👍🏻

Hi How many hive do you have
Hi Edward, about 200 production colonies and about 140 nucs and mini-plus mini mating nucs.
Ian's machine should be manufactured and sold...I would buy one.
Me too! I am sure somewhere there is a similar machine, but it needs to be really industrial because this is heavy stuff work!

Can that hornet trap setup be scaled up to a larger container?
Barnyard bees has one amongst other beekeepers no doubt.

In mix size/volume I would have added 6# of honey. It helps keep it from drying out.
Hi Justin, That’s what the vegetable does. Works well.
@@richardnoel3141 OR just use inverted syrup (e.g. HFCS) the fructose is hygroscopic.
As a farmer we bought it by the 50 gallon measure each year to add to cattle feed for added vitamins through the winters.
Put poison in a hot dog. Hornets love that stuff.
Hey Richard, where do you order the Ultra Bee Sup? I got it from the UK some Years ago, but now after Brexit? Greetings Flo

They make a wax paper sandwich 🥪 bag.

can you find marmite in France?
Yes very expensive though!
I got a load on my last trip to jersey
Mixing works great in a cement mixer
Yes that’s an option but you need a good clean mixer, which I don’t have. Only and old crusted up one!!😊
