I first met Mr Stuart on Oxford Street about 12 years ago. He took the piss because I was shooting street with a 5Dii, the liberty! Next time I saw him he agreed to judge a free street comp we were running. Didn't charge, was just happy to help spread the enthusiasm for the genre. One of the UK's best contemporary photographers and a great ambassador.
Matt's enthusiasm is infectious. I want to go outside and take pictures immediately! Also I think he did more than 20k steps in this video let alone a day 😂😂😂
That ending😆 definitely can credit Matt for being an influence in getting me interested in street photography when I found out whatever I am doing has a name🙏🏻 always good to hear what he is up to. Can't wait for that cat lady in the bush book haha.
This was genuinely brilliant 👏🏽. Modesty, humour and enthusiasm in photography is essential IMO, and Matt has all three! Stoked that you asked my question too (appreciate you highlighting my use of exclamation marks and emojis too 😆)
Pure gold! In between some light hearted banter there were some real nuggets of knowledge. I’m only 3 years into my street photography journey and hearing from people 2 or 3 decades in is very inspiring. Going to take some photos now ✌🏼
Ah man what a great video. Loved it. Great to see him actually being interviewed and not being used as click bait to watch a video. I imagine I'll be going back to this one a few times 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Such an inspiring person. I went to PhotoLondon last year because I knew Joel Meyerowitz was doing a book signing there, and then walking around the venue I met Matt Stuart out of the blue and it literally made my day meeting two of my favourite street photographers the same day.
Blimey Josh, you weren't wrong when you told me that Matt moved fast on Saturday when I saw you at Photo London!!! Great video mate. Always look forward to a new Framlines video to watch.
That was fascinating! What a guy Matt is. So funny, but so observant and quick on his feet. Always focused! I'd love to attend one of his workshops one day. Excellent video as always, Josh! Can't wait for the next one already 👏🏼😁
Thanks for sharing. What struck me (and I don't think that's unrealistic) was Matt saying, "I spent 12 years for 50 photographs." Couple that with the energy ("hyper"? hectics?) he's displaying (and the incessant "clicking" sound on the track) and his commentary (e.g. "doing the loop", projects, ..) while moving along ... well, food for thought, for sure.
I appreciate the advice re: constraints and tackling multiple projects. Whilst I do enjoy heading out with zero plan and low expectations, perhaps I could get more out of each day by adding some structure. Thanks for the video!
It’s something I’ve resisted so far as I get so few chances to shoot in London and want to capture whatever I can. I’d find it very hard to not take a couple dressed in red because I was doing a project on yellow. Maybe it’s my ADHD?!
Love listening to talented people like Matt. One small feedback: can you do it with a gimbaled camera next time? I watched this on my TV and got quite sick from the camera shake.
Well enjoyed listening to that interview as well as looking at Matts work. If he put a Liverpool cap on and a pair of glasses, at a quick glance he would look like Jurgen.
Josh I appreciate this 🙏 who is matt Stuart? One of the best and love the deep dive especially in history of working customer service reminds about me..matt is of the best I love his work will have to get some his books soon..cudos josh and keep safe
@@frame-lines Hi, again! My signed copy of the 3rd edition of All that Life Can Afford arrived today! It's an incredible book of extraordinary quality. And I have your video to thank for this. :) Also, if you happen to be in touch with Matt, I hope you will pass along my gratitude to him as well. Thank you.
Truly one of the true creators of this genre in photography who like me work the same way they use manual focus lenses and think before they push the button. Not like today's self-proclaimed photographers with brilliant cameras and auto-focus lenses and mindless pictures. Admirations to you brother Matt
I love these kinds of videos! People watching the people watcher. Tho I would like to say that the attraction to that circular/repetitive activity is probably not OCD but more like stimming. Stimming gets a bad rap but it's essentially tickling your brain.
Having the sun angle low with the deep reds and oranges enhances the tonal quality of black and white photography... If you study your photos, you will see the difference.
Please do something different in New York! So many 'photographers' just doing snapshots. "A lot of people can take photographs, but not a lot of people are good at it"
17:50 It's probably better to not know. I felt that way when I saw Robert Frank's contact sheets for his photo book "The Americans" and saw several images were "coached"...still legendary just not organic.
Minor feedback - it was bit difficult to watch this with the camera shake in the video. Maybe it is just me but i had to stop after some time and try again
0:45 hi,. the netherlands. you don't have to worry, we all speak english. not kidding, we grow up on it and we get it in school. language is the least of your worries over here.
I think the few women in street photography has nothing to do with gear, per se. Anywhere in the world, it is dangerous for a woman to be alone on the street. They are much more threatened. And they are good because for decades we censored, at least did not make room for, their vision. Their place in photography, unfortunately, for us is still new, even with so many excellent photographs. But I don´t know, its just a guess... Great vid btw

Street-Photography using a digital camera is just as valid; I have known Street-Photographers who shoot on film yet they indiscriminately shoot anything and everything thus are less than discerning and lack discipline.
"I don't think I'm a particularly good photographer, but I put a shit lot of time into it."
Refreshing modesty from one of the GOATs.
Haha yes ❤️
100% if Matt can be that modest then some RUclipsrs (not josh or Shane) need to take a leaf out of his book
Thank you for making this. ❤
Thank YOU Matt

There’s a NYC Street-Photographer who shoots using a 10”x8” Large-Format camera; therefore you using a 35mm DSLR isn’t all that unusual.

Fortunate enough to own a 1st edition of his book signed , bought it when it came out , it's staying with me for the long haul . Great interview.

I'd like to be Matt Stuart when I grow up. But I'm 68. Hey ho!
Superb video of our hero!
Ahah excellent cheers John
Plenty of time! Just heed the advice about setting parameters and goals - I think that is stellar advice for anyone doing this sort of photography. :)
❤❤❤❤ love! the great vid, very nice Matt, thank you!!!
What a brilliant interview. Applause
Thank you !!
Met and spoke to him at Gothenburg Street Festival last year, a very nice guy! And amazing photographer:)
Anyone know which lens he used on those photos? Please. I have 50mm but want to buy 28mm or 35mm I am not sure which one first
I used a 35mm lens 👍

Love the snippets of passer-bys' conversation. Could become a parallel art form - people out with roving mikes, grabbing clips and publishing them...
Yes good idea, audio samples, tender moments in modern history.

I loved the story about Jo(e) the dog. Thanks Matt and Josh for answering/posing my question, I’d not heard the story before… bonus!
nice one Dan

Thank you !

Exactly what I was thinking. It’s about safety.
I would love to shoot at sunrise but it’s not safe for me to be hanging around by myself in the dark.
