Today I take a look at a shareware classic Hugo's House of Horrors (Gray Design Associates, 1990). Chances are that if you had a computer in the early 90s, and access to a shareware collection, you've played this game. But was it actually any good? Let's find out!

Fun bits of trivia in this episode, really enjoyed it! Many fond memories of this series of games from childhood.
😌agreed lgr
This game is the cornerstone of my childhood and whenever I see it I almost go unconscious from the amount of nostalgia juices that explode in my brain.
It's the first game I ever played and it was the start of my love for video games. I still play it regularly and I think I have the world record for speed-running the game.
I remember when I was a kid it took me 6 or more months to beat it the first time. I didn't know how to read/write (because I was very small) and this game actually got me started on literacy. I used my encyclopedia to find the answers to the old man's quiz, but it took much longer to find the Roy Rogers answer (I'm from Australia so no one knew who Roy Rogers was and it wasn't in the encyclopedia).
Same here torgo I'm from Massachusetts 🙃
This is one of my favorites from my childhood, thanks for making this video! The creator is usually pretty active and emailed me back a long time ago with a really nice response to questions I had for him.
Great review of a "It's bad yet somehow it's good" game. Is the image of the exterior of the house really redrawn from a piece of clip-art? If so, great trivia!
i remember this game!!! i thought it was a fever dream!
Thanks for making me hate this classic. I love you.
It's such an interesting thing - everyone knew about these and they're so classic despite being objectively terrible. (I had no idea about the Windows versions and had never heard that MIDI rendition of the starting theme!) The dog terrified me - I hate being chased by invincible enemies, and this game tricked you into triggering it yourself.
Fond memories even though it was challenging back then because I was just learning to read and write then.
Fantastic review, Anatoly, as always!! Thank you so much for sharing! Looking forward to more, as always!!! :)
Anyone know how to find a game from 80's 90's? it was about a detective/police/man with a gun that killed green monsters. Most background was brick made and he goes to a lab.
Ms. Munoz manic mansion is that the game it's on dos box 😊
I think even as a kid playing this I knew it wasn't a great game, but at the time Sierra-style adventures were still novel and interesting. I remember calling a Library reference desk about the Roy Rogers question, since the internet didn't exist as we know it to google such things!
I loved this game when I was a kid, but to be honest, it's a terrible adventure game where the riddles makes no sense at all. It doesn't worth 5.99, sorry.
To be fair, it's all 3 games for $5.99, but yeah, I'd also agree that all of them aren't worth that much either.
I thought 5.99 for just one game. I bought Sam&Max Hit The Road on GOG for 5.99 :)
HappyDude97836 the game had terrible graphics but was fun to play when I was nine in 1993 👻
Wow... I totally forgot about Hugo 3. Can't say I've touched (or at least, remember...) the other games in the serious... but I loved Hugo 3 as a kid.
Lori their was a shooter version called Nightmare 3d it came out in 1994📼
I remember thinking this game was a really cheapo knockoff of maniac mansion.
I remember playing this as a kid but I hated it, I was like 5-8 and still am a terrible speller. So I could never get very far lol
Love the graphic
It's not a carpet, it's rug. Look under it ;)
When I was a kid and I got this game on an UK magazine review disk, I couldn't figure out a lot of things due to my limited English skill. But I did manage to find a rendering bug. The game let's you type beyond the one line so afterwards the screen moves up, pushing the graphics along with it. animations stay in place though.
Great game 🙃
Loved this game when I was a kid! My brother and I beat the trilogy.
I beat all 3 hugo games as well the first one took me 5 mins and the 2nd and 3nd sequels took me 15 mins to beat😌
I like your secretely half russian accent! So awesome! and great vids too! :D
Kinda remains me of Maniac Mansion. Only this one is... more serious, I guess? :)
This video unlocked something in my brain
I miss this!! Does anyone remember what the one without any graphics was called where you constantly got stuck in a chasm? Started with a "Z" .... I can't remember, but played it in grade school in like '96
Zork?
Loved having this game on the old 386!
I only played the windows version so far.

I guess he made this game because he was interested in programing. It did have a good salary in the tower control. He could be making a different buisness, than games, with the money put aside from tower control salary.
He was a professional programmer already. He wrote software for underwater missiles for the UK ministry of defense, and then the wrote software for air traffic control in the US. As I've mentioned in the video, Gray Design Associates's first two products were business software (a typing tutor, and an OCR software), and both were commercial failures.
never heard of this game. nice review btw. how about request of review? heroes 2,terminal velocity, heretic, red alret, carmagedon
It sucks we can not play the remake he had a shit fit over it and did dmca it seems stupid giving that it is like 20 years old. does anyone have it before the download was remove because of him?
+Michelle L You can grab the remake from Adventure Legends legendsworld.net/adventure/game/3771
+Michelle L Also he didn't have a shit fit. I don't agree with him asking to take the game down, but he did it in the nicest and most polite way possible.
Thanks you never could find it.
I do hope he makes a new Huge are remake in the future with the retro market being so big now
SPOOOOOOKY.
What nationality are you? I'm trying to figure out where your accent is from :P
+Daniel Lo Nigro (Daniel15) I'm Russian.
I only had Jungle of Doom, I remember being stuck so bad. I never beat it.
You get softlocked if you pass the bridge before checking the plane.
Hello! Dos Nostalgia.
Hello.
Use to play this game when I was nine in 1993 a kid in my school installed the game on the class computer and gave me the cheat codes for the it only took me 10 mins💀
