Lucid starting out with only high end trims is a good thing as it allows them to slowly ramp up production (the hardest part of launching a car), allowing them to be a little more slow and learn how to improve the process. Agree they are following the model Tesla did with the S/X but I’m sceptical that they will become anything other than a very good niche manufacturer. @@Daniel-dj7fh You hold your phone in your hand when you unlock it, that's what makes it easy for you to unlock it blindly because you can easily tell the screen position, no doubt it will be harder to do in a car where you're just reaching out with your hand. Tactile feedback in tasks that are so brain dead repetitive that it becomes muscle memory is nice and making the HVAC controls touch only is just being tech for the sake of it without considering practicality, which is Musk’s entire ethos as a human being.
I saw a Lucid Air prototype at the Amelia Concours when they were seeking initial investors a few years ago and was shocked by how much the car stood out. The design team did a great job.
Tesla also started on the high end before adding the 'economical' Model 3. I think it sets the tone of the brand, allows you to economically bring certain features across over time and perhaps helps pay for the development of the cheaper models (Elon's rationale for the that strategy). Glad to seeing some additional quality competition in this space.
On your point about decoupling various aspects of different driving modes, it would increase the customizability of the car, but it could also lead to some dangerous combinations. For example, what if the softer suspension can't handle the steeper power curve and it results in an incredibly unstable mode? Regardless of if any dangerous combos actually exist or not, Lucid would still have to prove it and in the process have a much more difficult time getting the car certified, likely driving up the cost further.
@@redactedredacted8434 The IIHS will do its evaluation of the Tesla 3 and the Lucid and report back. Highway Safety is paramount. I wouldn't call a high end exotic manufacturer solid competition. Most people can't afford these and there's no shortage of EV competition in the high end market. They need to start making them affordable. I don't care about these 80,000 dollar plus cars. Show us something we can actually buy..

The lower touchscreen on the Lucid Air actually has more features than the top display (Seat adjustment, customization, etcetera). Marques, one mistake that I should correct you on is that the Lucid does indeed support Apple CarPlay wirelessly or by using USB-C, including Android Auto. In terms of range, HP and reliability, I would take this over the Model S anytime. The Air is very luxurious and now other EVs are coming by. Great review!
Agreed. I can't help but feel like the team might start move into advertising consulting or something to compliment the rest of the MKBHD brands/channels going forward, even if it isn't necessarily their intent now.
Don’t listen to Elon about how Lucid it won’t make it. Tesla almost went bankrupt twice before it became successful. I think he is worried about Lucid motors becoming more popular and a better car company than Tesla is today. I believe Lucid motors is a way better car than Tesla. Lucid will turn things around, just like Elon did. All it took was for him to be able to sell more cars faster and be able to sell cars for a cheaper price. When Tesla first released there BIG car, people forget it had a 120,00$ price tag on it!
I was honestly thinking that maybe he borrowed the logo animation directly from Lucid. If not and he made it, Lucid should probably pay him to use it. 😂
@@BeachLookingGuy haha yeah, and then proceed to immediately replace it with next year's newest "future car". you know, to fit the yearly quota of electronic garbage.
It still wows me that Lucid didn’t fall between the cracks right out of gate, unlike so many other EV start ups (well, they almost did, but they were saved) - and the Air is a perfect demonstration of the fact that their success so far means they’re doing something right. Will they hold out? I don’t know - it’s hard to say at this point, but with a company with this much potential, I would hope they stand the test of time.
Up to the point they turn a profit the only real accomplishment is attracting investors. If you can't you die. Not saying design and engineering are unimportant as they are part of what attracts first investors then buyers. But nothing you have done matters if the company folds for lack of money. I hope they do well to. We need more competition.
In general just due to the nature of how they’re designed (with max aerodynamic efficiency a priority which greatly increases range), EVs end up looking very low, rounded, jelly beanish etc. That said they also end up with a love it or hate it design. Many true car enthusiast think Tesla’s are ugly, as well as this car and even the soon to be released in USA Ioniq 6. I personally think this Lucid Air has a very neat “boss like” commanding presence on the road! I first saw one last summer while riding my E-Bike on the Belt pky bike trails. It was a neck snap reaction, and I was like WOW what is that? It had a very big commanding presence without being gaudy or gimmicky like so many modern vehicles. I then had to find out what it was so I pull over and googled EVs sedans 2022 and it wasn’t long before I saw an image of that sedan. I said to myself “oh ok Lucid Air. Very cool I’ll have to further investigate it later”. I did only to find its way out of my price range sadly! Summary I find it an attractive vehicle as well as the Ioniq 6. Is it an instant classic like the 1963-5 Riviera or 1969-71 Continental Mark lll ? Def Not. Those cars have a design that will never be again and are from an era of design over function. But in a strange way I think the Lucid Air is similar in that it’s a large car with a very commanding presence. The only bad thing is I wish I could afford one! Lol
I'm a firm believer that innovation only progresses through competition and it's so good to see more and more companies stepping on teslas toes... Even if i do prefer my standard IC engine cars
The BEV market is much bigger than the supply. All these cars like Lucid are really in competition with ICEVs, not Tesla. I think the reason they try to outmatch Tesla is to show competence and to make sure they have demand. It's near impossible to outmatch an established manufacturer's pricing and your best bet is to provide exclusive features and then up the price enough to (roughly) pay for your lacking manufacturing efficiency.
I really like the look from the front, but the interior and rear of the car I struggle with. I much prefer the minimalism + yoke interior of your Model S.

There are reasons why the suspension, acceleration, and height configurations are tied together. If users are able to configure them independently, they could make some dangerous and unstable combinations. The suspension behavior and height of the vehicle are significant for stability, especially during cornering.
usually if you depress the accelerator completely you still get the maximum power in any mode so there isn't any difference. other settings beside the suspension are mostly about driving feel so do not change the physics of the car. in any case if my VW can do it for sure a lucid can do it.
I actually worked at a place where one of the customers owns one. Saw it for the first time about 3 Months ago already. I really dig the looks of the Lucid.

MKBHD, you're spot-on about the look of the back, I 100% agree. From front-to-back, 3/4 of the car looks great, but the back is very awkward. It's almost like two different people designed the front and back, that speak different design languages. The Model S looks much better all the way through and has a cohesive look from frunk to trunk.
at 1:24 you obviously should have compared it with the model s plaid which still is substantial cheaper. Beside that you completely 'forgot' to compare the autopilot function which still is an usp for tesla
6:11 "And theres one other thing that this car does well, ans thats drive" Idk why this cracked me up. You were reviewing all these crazy features of the car that we almost forgot what the car is for 😅😅
***EDIT 3-26-2024 - Lucid's base Pure model is available now, $69,900, less than & longer range than Model S*** On November 15th Lucid will have an online event rolling out the cheaper Touring and Pure models. Deliveries start by December. Touring model is same price as a base Model S, the Pure is $20,000 less. I actually was drawn to the Lucid because of its bold design. The retro-French look is somewhat polarizing, I know, but I have received _Many_ compliments on the car's looks from random passersby.
Actually - the trunk design by Lucid is pretty good if you look at the reason why they did it. Apparently, they designed the trunk this way not to compete with Tesla but to compete with BMW 7 Series and MB S-Class. Its the same wheel-base as those cars but you get much much more backseat leg room.
I worked for the Lucid Studio in Manhasset, New York. There is now a “Stealth” trim option for the top which is a dark gunmetal gray. It does kind of look like a Lincoln MKZ from behind though. The stealth package is available on every trim except Air PUR
At this price point, I don't see why you are comparing it with Tesla. Just because both (certain) Maybach and KIA models use conventional gasoline engines, it doesn't mean that they should be compared against each other. What these two cars have in common? Both electric? Find me a car that "One-up" Tesla at the same price range of Tesla and then we are talking.
I just like to say one thing about the drive modes/personalities @Marques, the presets are provided "because" it isn't a good idea to mix and match all the features we like from each preset to make a custom mode when it comes to vehicle modes. for example what you like, a sprint style acceleration with softer suspension, would cause the vehicle to become unstable due to the sprung mass bouncing about. Couple that with high acceleration and arguably, a propensity drive fast if you like zippy acceleration, you'd be risking loss of control/weaving. another thing is at higher acceleration, the G-loads are higher on the suspension and a softer one would have less damping and thus would risk bottoming out. do this in the long run and your shocks would need replacing sooner than expected. I'd argue that having unstable drive characteristics and needing to replace major components sooner in the life cycle as bigger No-Nos in a premium car of such price tag, than the ability to fiddle with drive modes. because a lay person cannot be expected to know the good balance of acceleration, Regen, suspension stiffness, ride height, etc from the get go. Thus, a person can choose if they want to cruise, or sprint and the vehicle takes care of the rest.
Just finished watching MKBHD's first RUclips video, so glad he kept it online. His growth and success in RUclips are amazing. Okay now I am off to buy my Lucid electric car haha
That Music/Maps thing you were talking about at 5:40, my opinion and best estimates would say that if you had the muscle memory for where to tap on the screen, you don't have to focus downward, potentially distracting you during a drive, but if you were still, then you'd have the ability to control what's going on with precision and a bigger screen. But it also lets you know what the passenger is doing like suggesting a song from an album while you're driving and you get to see their input whilst keeping your eyes on the road. But that's my best guess. Anyways, Keep these going! EVs are tech, and cant wait to see you do collabs with car channels to test suspension and how loading the fronk/trunk with different weights affects the drive/power consumed per charge
People like to complain about how touch buttons distract them, but at the same time only look on their phones or play around with the infotainment system and not paying any attention to the road.
Hi Marques, great video. You are watched around the world, which is great. The imperial system is not used around the world, because it isn't great. Doug Demouro always shows the metric conversions of miles etc. in the bottom of the video, whenever he mentions number like these. Would you be so kind as to do something similar? Thank you.
This is looking pretty nice! I'm nowhere near being in the market for a vehicle, especially not a luxury one, but this makes me excited to see what can be done!
Lucid will have a hard time to build enough cars while being profitable. Not as bad as Tesla in its beginning years when everybody laughed about them. But being profitable with only luxery cars is difficult. Especially if it's an EV and the customers usually buy Porsches, Ferraris, ... instead.
I actually saw a Lucid in my neighborhood here in San Diego yesterday and that thing was driving around so stealthy, so elegant with them lights on, and so fast 🔥🔥🔥

Lol
This car company has always been on my radar. Such a refinement of electric cars today.

Lol to say that Lucid missed Tesla’s foot by a mile would be an understatement.

There are reasons why the suspension, acceleration, and height configurations are tied together. If users are able to configure them independently, they could make some dangerous and unstable combinations. The suspension behavior and height of the vehicle are significant for stability, especially during cornering.
Ferrari makes you able to change the settings individually. Other brands does as well
usually if you depress the accelerator completely you still get the maximum power in any mode so there isn't any difference. other settings beside the suspension are mostly about driving feel so do not change the physics of the car. in any case if my VW can do it for sure a lucid can do it.

But to others, the slash of the trunk line is... ugly.
So it’s not the trunk design that’s good, it’s the design of those other things at the expense of trunk functionality…
I didn't like the exterior design at first, but it grew on me. Now I quite like it! :)

Thanks for your* sanity. I give Lucid a couple of years to vaporize.
Why are there no Lucid fans defending their car here? Lol
