    The F10 is awesome. But a 60 degree beam angle on the 2.5k HMI is heaps wider than 45 on the F10. If you move the aputure back to 4.18M to match the area of coverage of the HMI the LUX of the Aputure drops to about 5100.
    So realistically it is half as bright as the 2.5K is you need to cover a larger area with light.

    • @stuartkidney3257

      I appreciate what Aputure is doing, they are single-handedly reinventing lighting for prosumer, corporate and many areas of broadcast video production! There's still room for other vendors for film and broadcast to "shine" with their current and new products.

    @Gaffer & Gear Is the right edge of the beam considerably warmer than the rest, or am I seeing things? Around a fifth of the beam of my 1st gen 300d head is warm, and that's a replacement for my original head unit that went completely warm after a year of use. That's made me hold off on buying a 600d Pro (although I have used rented 300d IIs without seeing this issue). How has your 300d II held up?

    • @gaffergear

      My HMI Fresnel lights, and all my other daylight Fresnels have the same warm edge too, so it must be something to do with fresnel optics with daylight fixtures.

      Not sure this would be useful at this point but I contacted the US Account Manager for Aputure with the same question. This was the reply... The F10 Fresnel is optimized for the LS 600d PRO and Ls 600x PRO. You can use it on the other COB Bowens mount fixtures such as the 120d, 300d, and 300x. Those are optimized for the Fresnel 2x. The F10 Fresnel on these fixtures would result in the beam angle listed on the F10 Frenel’s side to be inaccurate. You will get a wider beam pattern with the Fresnel 2x.

    I have the F10 Fresnel and Barn doors. I saw people on an aputure group that managed to actually fit the fresnel IN the 600D case. (Not the barn doors) I followed suite so now I don't have to load up the F10 drum case... however. I would have to put the original dish reflector the 600D comes with somewhere else if I wanted to still bring it. BUT having the fresnel, is there any reason one might still want to bring the OG reflector? Or leave it at home going forward?
    Only reason i could think to still keep the dish is lighter and quick to setup?

      @@johanlindqvist99 Yeah, and the M18 is open face, no Fresnel lens cutting down the output. But can't wait to see where we are with LEDs in 10 years from now. Image a single 1800W COB with a large Fresnel and even higher efficiency then today (like 240 lumen/W) - just through technology advancements. That would be 6 times the output of the 600D.

      @Stefan Scherperel I know the tener-led. But it got crappy light quality compared to latest LEDs and is super heavy. And it focuses from 55° to 10° and can only double its output at full spot? Thanks for another great in depth video, Andrew! Can you explain why it is not going to replace an M18 any time soon? I mean, if used with the F10, the 600d will be brighter at medium spot according to your readings.

    • @lightswitchvideo
      @lightswitchvideo 3 года назад +1

      Because that's the brightness of an M18 at full flood. You start spotting and it gets very toasty. But the reason you want more light is you can manipulate it. With the M18 you can diffuse it or bounce it to simulate different sky scenarios while still maintaining stop.
      That being said, I ordered two of these specifically to replace renting M18s. Since a lot of the time you're relamping with 1200 bulbs to be safe on home outlets anyway and most shoots don't need that much stop since we're shooting more open and I've noticed a trend in wanting harder light. 🤪

    Been waiting for your review on this, thank you. Can I please ask how is "the look" the aesthetic feel compared to an Arri Studio 2K. Will it look as good on people as the Arri Studio 2K is the fall off pleasing ? Especially as you said it has a hot spot. Can I ask did you try it on the Aputure 300D II because every one who owns one, like me, will want to know. One last thing. The barn doors I assume don't come with a case. Any ideas on what to keep them in to stop them getting scratched to hell. The scims are standard Arri (like) 10 inch aren't they ? One suggestion. The doors come in a cardboard box with foam cutting.
      The hotspot is 7 to 10% so not perceivable to the eye. I only mentioned it because I wanted to specify I didn't take my readings in that spot.
      Except for beam angle not being as wide, it's aesthetics are what I would expect from any real fresnel fixture. I have some ARRI studio 5Ks and the hotspot in the 10F is way less than in those.

    Thanks for this review and the stats! Any chance you can post the reading of the 600D vs the 2.5K HMI at 6-9 meters? I'm seeing that the throw of an LED isn't as far as a tungsten or HMI so I'm curious how the 600D would fare at longer distances.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 года назад +7

      I think I know what is going on here!
      I haven't got this problem with my kits. I'm lighting studios with skypanels where I used to use 2k tungsten. My Dedo LED throw the same as the old tungsten. I've had various small LED Fresnels over the last ten years and they throw the same, if not better, as the 200 HMI they replaced. The Forza 500 Fresnel throws as I would expect, and this 600D throws like I would expect also, so on and so on.
      BUT..... from testing gear that did not make it onto the chanel, I suspect that some LED manufacturers have set up their lights to be super bright at 1m so they can make an amazing claim in their advertising about output. Then past 1 metre they scatter.
      1st time I came across this I was blown away by what I saw as deceit.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 года назад +4

      I lot of people think I sit on the fence with these answers, I wish I could put photos here to show how I use them.
      My large van now has two Forza 500 and two 600d.
      The 600d I will use just with this F10 because if the amazing fire power, they have replaced my 1.2k HMI pars, and after a few months I will decide whether to sell my 2.5K HMI Fresnels depending on how many times I need a 60 degree spread.
      The Forza are so light weight, and when I don't need that fire power of the 600d with the F10 the Forza will be my go to because it's easier to move around and I'm getting too old to carry heavy shit. Plus it runs at full power of two v-mounts (for 50 minutes only)
      I think gaffers love Forza 500s because they are so small and light weight. I used them last week on boom arms to get sunlight through windows when we needed to hide the stands. I would not want to do that with a 600D and an F10 because they are just too heavy.
      But the 600D in combination with the F10 is twice as bright. And that's replacing larger HMI lights on set. So for example on my last job I was using both 600D to put sunlight on backgrounds with hard shadows.
      Previously that would have required two 2.5k Fresnels, that's about 3600 watt more power draw,I would have had to carry wind up stands not push up stands, twice the amount of shot bags, and had to carry heavy ballasts. And I could set my levels with lumin radio DMX without leaving the set. So they saved me a lot of hard labour and effort
      So it's like asking, if I could choose only a flat head screw driver or a Phillips head screw driver, which would I pick?
      It's annoying, but both is the answer for me. But without the F10, I would have no interest in the 600d

      Optics on a 2.5K HMI Fresnel spotted to 45 degrees are very muddy. It would give you better output but no decent shadows or barn door cuts. I thought about having it in the review but I couldn't think of a situation where I would use a fresnel HMI spotted in from 60 to 45 degrees over using a HMI Par. So I figured for people who own a HMI Fresnel it would be an irrelevant figure for comparison. @@gaffergear Thanks!
      I’m moving to Dayside after 15 yrs night side so I’m trying to “kit up”. When I was in Phoenix Az we had Arri M8’s on c stands, for live shots and planned pressers. Which ran off of the live truck. But that’s a little too pricey for me to front. The 600 seemed kind of like comparable modern “pro-Sumer” alternative. Especially with the built in charger and moderate weather proofing.

      @@bonnevillebagger9147 it shits on an M8 in terms of light levels, also no warm up time, no re-strike issues, and rain resistant.
