    for people who are confused about Emily… if she made 120000$ modeling a year she wouldn’t be able to pay for the medical care she needs. being on SSI makes her medical care free, and i believe she saying she also gets 850$ a month from the government for other expenses.. she’s forced to stay with SSI because it’s a big risk not to, she has to guarantee that she’ll be able to afford her medical care and living expenses before just switching over… she probably has to make well over 350000 a year modeling if she wants to get off SSI.
    EDIT: the real problem i believe is how expensive medical care is!!

    As a disabled woman who works in the entertainment industry I am both saddened and NOT shocked that the disabled model is making the least... Things have to change. We're deemed "lucky" to get an "opportunity," meanwhile companies are making money off of using us "diverse" entertainers. I'm glad Emily is doing what she's doing, but girl deserves to be paid her worth, paid what a non-disabled model would be paid, and no longer living on government payments that are designed in such a way that stops disabled people from actually being successful and achieving their potential. The system is so broken and it hurts my heart. That said, I'm glad Jubilee included her and I'm glad the other models didn't automatically rank her as the lowest earning simply because she's disabled - these may not seem like a big deal to the average person, but as a disabled person I know that even these two small things are a sign of change.

    • @Night-Shade.
      @Night-Shade. Год назад +240

      That industry is all about vanity and conventional beauty at the top end. Unfortunately, those are the pictures that sell the best and if they’re in higher demand then of course they’re going to make more money. That’s the sad, capitalist world we live in I’m afraid.
      It’s a bit like expecting a disabled soccer player playing in the English 3rd division expecting the same pay as Christiano Ronaldo. Different leagues, different marketable traits, different pay.

Usually in the modeling industry, you can find a lot of photographers looking for unique characters to bring more attention to the items and brands they are modeling for and emily has so much potential to make it in the modeling industry but SSI is for sure not letting her reach her full potential but I'm so glad she's not letting it hold her back because especially in the modeling industry, being disabled can be a challenge due to prejudice/judgement from others inequality, etc, and I truly respect her for not letting those things that could possibly enstill fear in people like her from doing what they enjoy and are passionate about

    It is a tragic injustice that Emily is not allowed to be paid as well as any other model and that if she does she loses the security of social support.
    That is truly tragic.

    • @russianvalkyrie2358

      The law has to change. The say SSI works is you cant make more than a certain amount or have more than a certain amount to recieve benefits. The issue is its too low and the threshold needs to be higher especially with the way the economy and inflation is. Write your local government and tell them how you feel. And if you can try to donate to causes that help disabled people.

      Do something. Write to your congressman. Start a petition. Donate to charities for disabled people. Complaining and being outraged does nothing to help us.

    I'm still confused why they aren't allowed to make money? America is so messed up

    • @douglasquaid2548

      Not America, its her. She doesnt want to give up the SSI benefits.

    • @emanuelafigliuolo5266
      @emanuelafigliuolo5266 Год назад +29

      She technically could earn money, but she would lose the benefts that the state gives her. She talked about needing a caregiver, that's a whole other person that may need to spend several hours a day to take care of you that needs to be hired and paid.
      And also healthcare is already expensive even for non disabled people in the USA, if she needs specific treatments or medication that are now part of the state benefits she would have to pay way much for private insurance.
      Basically, unless she landed a job that made her rich it's unfortunately more convenient for her to keep the benefits and try to make it work with 800$ a month.

      @@douglasquaid2548 It's literally America though. If you need crazy money to be able to afford the same basic lifestyle which, just in a financial sense, sounds borderline miserable, then of course you won't risk your life just to get the same life you had before that. Can you give me a sane reason why a person who recieves this cosmical pension of 850$ can't work a job making more than what? 2-3k? Why would you keep these people outside the working force when they and society can benefit from it? Then you go and say "We're the country that spends most on healthcare" and don't realise you're just being ripped off by high prices that go into certain pockets and nobody gets the healthcare they need for the appropriate money. I'm sorry, but if this girl worked with these big brands and lived in my country she'd be straight up rich, because we don't stop people from working and we have borderline free healthcare.

    • @DD-rh2sz
      @DD-rh2sz Год назад +1

      America is messed up because they support this girl who has issues she was born with? America provides her with caregivers, food, rent, medications, doctors etc. and then $850/month spending money. She doesn't have to do anything for all that support. She can then choose to work for donations, or cash etc. if money is important to her. There are a lot of countries that would not have that support so your comment seems to come from a place of immense privilege.
