Vikings is slower that TLK but is worth it, if only to watch the last three episodes of Season 3. Season 1 is a bit choppy but Season 2 and 3 are great and as I say the conclusion to S3 is brilliant. I haven't seen the last 3 seasons of Vikings yet so can't comment on them.
I would continue watching Vikings as 2 episodes isn't enough to judge, it starts off slow but gets better. I still prefer TLK but Vikings isn't bad. Some shows just start slow because they're trying to introduce you to the cast and the background for the story and the world. Like Breaking Bad started off slow and ends up really good. Game of Thrones was also a slow start and gets better. Someone in my family gave up after a couple episodes and so they missed out on what it's about as not much has happened yet. The good stuff happens later in the season. I have read the books and you need to read more to have good judgement in books as they are longer. I also think that attention spans play a role in this too as they now say people have shorter attention than before with all the modern technology.

It's not a spin off btw. It has no connection other than both being based in the same time in the past, so some people and events may correlate. but they are fictional not connected and not history but still very enjoyable
Im not a viking knowledge-based person, but from what I have read online, vikings did not leave that much written or any type of verifiable knowledge that one can work much with to be able to critique the accuracy of many things. Whether right or not, you cannot be too biased about a series as all historical series/movies have a great deal of fiction or embellishments added. You'd be hurting yourself by not enjoying the great acting and overall quality of both series discussed here. Just trip it out and enjoy.
I came here because I have watched four seasons of the Last Kingdom, re-binged the entirety of Vikings (having seen the first four seasons as they came out before the long pause). And now there is Vikings: Valhalla. I wanted to check it out. As soon as I started looking, I couldn’t remember which was which and so I took a look and Last Kingdom has a fifth season I haven’t seen. But, I needed refreshing on which plots were lead by the hero’s out there and which show was which!
The vikings series had better characters like Floki. Plus the show dives deeper into the philosophy and culture of the Viking people. The musical score did a very good job with making you feel like you were actually present in ancient Scandinavia. I fell in love with so many characters because the actor's went above and beyond for their roles In the last kingdom, the only character that I can connect with is Uthred. And he basically remains the same throughout the series, making him predictable. The last kingdom did a better job portraying the Christian perspective of things. Basically, the vikings was from a Scandinavian perspective while the last kingdom was from a Christian Saxon perspective.
TLK basically goes off the saxon chronicles were vikings is up the wall with its story its starts with the raids on lindisfarne in 780 were some fake character athelstan is Alfred's dad were Alfred is a 100 years later an the grandfather of athelstan the first king of England
I'm a hard fan of Vikings but The Last Kingdom is way better in the character performance and historical settings. What I like more in TLK than in Vikings is the purity, village and city settings and the acting. King Alfred of TLK is a masterpiece performance and acting. Vikings wins when it comes on adventure, emotional scenes and cinematic elements. Also the Viking vibe is more accessible in Vikings while the Vikings in TLK are more based on the standards (brute, arrogance and mentality). When it becomes to fighting, Vikings wins because of skills, ability and performance while TLK has better realistic fighting and more focused on speed, critical attack and movements. TLK gets my preference on plot and creativity in the story. The way Uhtred is connected to all historical figures from both Danes and Saxon's side makes it very interesting. The bond between him and Beocca is a stronger performed thing than the bond between Ragnar Lothbrok and Aethelstan in Vikings. Vikings has better dramatic and emotional key points and play this out stronger so that you go more into emotion and other feelings. If I had to choose between Vikings or TLK, my choice would be: Both! Both have their strengths that attract my interest.
The Last Kingdom is based on a famous BOOK series, that far preceded Vikings. The first book was released in 2004. So Vikings is the real ripoff here. Get your facts straight! And The Last Kingdom is far better storywise, more historically accurate and not at all "cheap" the way it looks and is produced.
I like both shows very much. However I learned a lot more from Vikings about their family life, religion and culture, especially is the early seasons. Also, TLK is about one man, Vikings is about a family. We learn for example very little about Uthreds marriage to Gisela. I also like the complex characters In Vikings. We can empathise more with them for that reason, we just know them better en get into their heads en emotions more. Uthreds adventures are compelling, but in Vikings the characters themselves are more compelling. When Ragnar left, there was a dip for me, but it was picked up by Lagertha, Bjorn and especially Ivar.
U gets upset with the change of ship and colorful costume scene of the last kingdom in season 1 ep1 if u came straight up from vikings series but u get use to it later trust me.
People forget saxons ARE vikings themselves. They're just christian vikings while danes, pagan. Saxons were generally superior to danes, especially considering the wealth. But in the show "vikings", it seems to go on an anti christian trope about how wimpy the saxons were. There's a reason why not only did england kick danes and norwegians out, but danish and norwegian vikings converted to christianity due to awe at the power it provided the saxons. So the last kingdom portrays history more accurately. Both were tough and it was a sort of religious civil war-each claimed rights to govern all vikings, and branded each other heathens. The last kingdom captures the political intricacy not just childish machismo attitude.
The Last Kingdom, Vikings and Valhalla are all great shows and make fantastic, compelling viewing. I personally prefer The Last Kingdom and its the only one I've watched twice over and will be watching it for a third time at some point.
TLK is far superior to Vikings in almost every way. (Not the film, that was shit). Battles in vikings too unrealistic and too heavily biased towards the vikings to the point of stupidity.
The Last Kingdom? Not understanding motives? I've been a writer, director and actor for 20 years and I've never heard such a bucket of shit in my life. No character arcs? Osferth? Uhtred & Alfred? Brida? Sihtric? How about Aethelflaed? WTF is this guy talking about? Pure piss and wind. I forgot the arc of Aelswith (a stunning performance by Eliza Butterworth, truly a future Titan of women's acting).
The Last Kingdom had better costumes for the Vikings even having helmets. Despite looking a bit hollywood-ish, it still tries to be somewhat accurate as opposed to the completely nonesensical biker leather armors in Vikings. Only Ivar's guards had accurate costumes and they are just nameless grunts with barely any screentime lol.
Historical accuracy: Ragnar Lothbrock is a legend, not a historical figure. There is no proof of his existence in the real world. Also, he was supposed to be from Denmark. Denmark is a flat country, just like old Ragnar told Uhtred. The landscape in Vikings is like Norway (mountains and fjords) The Norwegian vikings focused on Scotland, the islands north and west of it and Ireland. We hardly know anything about the "vikings" and their customs. So most of what was shown in Vikings (rituals and so on) was made up. There is no archeological evidence or written records that "shield maidens" like Lagertha and others existed at all. The concept of an "England" didn't exist in the 8th century, when Lindisfarne was raided by the Danish vikings. Yet, in Vikings, Ragnar says that he has heard of it by name. In Vikings Alfred was only a boy when his father (the King) was hiding in the marshes. This is not accurate. Alfred himself was king when this happened. In The Last Kingdom, the Danish characters are Scandinavians, not Canadians like in Vikings. As for the "spin-off": Beratung Cornwell never watched Vikings, nor Aethelred (Alfred's brother) died of a leathal wound after the battle of Ashendon. He wasn't killed by his mother. The Last Kingdom is mainly about the formation of England. It is not a "Viking show".
I like both, Vikings a bit more. A couple of the scenarios and character decisions on TLK seemed a bit more ridiculous. But not so much as to dislike it at all. I've watched Vikings through 3 times. I'm about to start my second binge of TLK.
This coming from someone who's profile here consists of video games and fantasy. You still holding a grudge over that 1776 thing ? I probably have forgotten more about history than you will ever know. I hope all people from GB aren't as naive as you are.

This feels like another RUclips video designed to create conflict in the comments. Your points were shallow as kiddy pool, like most viewers attention span and I assume the depth of your own character and intelligence.
I couldn't get into Last Kingdom, to me Vikings is the peak pinnacle of an amazing Viking show. Yes after certain character disappeared from the show as his --- "comes without an apology" wasn't as good, at the start that is. But later the show becomes really good again specially Bjorn vs Ivar and the events that folded afterwards were just phenomenal. I also think the ending was amazing as it showed why the Vikings had to change. And although Vikings might not be historically accurate, I love that it is loosely based on history, I also love how they managed to capture the spiritual and myth aspects of the Viking culture. Aside note, The Northman was also amazing.
Well the last kingdom is interesting series but the things which have shown of Vikings is quite disappointing and leaving that overall it was good. Nevertheless you can't compare the last kingdom with Vikings.
I just watched the first season of The Last Kingdom... How can you say the acting is great ? Alexander Dreymon is such a terrible choice, he looks like a dandy who would spend his days in a whorehouse, not a slave raised by Danes. The character Uhtred himself is even worse, all his lines are cheesy, expected, episode 3 he becomes an Ealdorman, episode 4 he single-handedly burns an entire fleet, kills who he calls "the strongest warrior he ever met", it's so over the top... none of it is believable.
I can t watch tlk.. the moment the guy in the last kingdom opened his mouth, trying to copy the accent of Ragnar in the most ridiculous way.. I really wanted to shut him off.. wtf.. i can’t stand the dialogues of tlk… so bad. Loved vikings.. they are the origin.. everything after was just tries to hop on the wave
I saw the Last Kingdom first and I will say this: even comparing the two is blatantly disrespectful to Vikings. TLK is a bastardized version of the exact same concept that preaches wayyy to much with worse acting and worse characters. It's like comparing Breaking Bad to Ozark. What's brought up in 4:49 proves my point. Every character is black and white while in Vikings characters like Ragnar, Ivar, Bjorn, Floki, Rollo and Ecbert (I could keep this list going) all feel like actual people as opposed to pre-written scripts. And to say that TLK is more historically accurate is not true and also not an argument.
The Last Kingdom was based on historical novels written way before Vikings came out. The author, Bernard Cornwell, included many actual historical figures and events.

I like both, Vikings a bit more. A couple of the scenarios and character decisions on TLK seemed a bit more ridiculous.
But not so much as to dislike it at all. I've watched Vikings through 3 times. I'm about to start my second binge of TLK.
Vikings is better but all the shows where top tier n entertaining and the funny thing is I saw last kingdom n Vikings Valhalla before I found vikings
Ngl but when I hear an American talk about history or geography I just know I can't take it seriously
This coming from someone who's profile here consists of video games and fantasy. You still holding a grudge over that 1776 thing ? I probably have forgotten more about history than you will ever know. I hope all people from GB aren't as naive as you are.
The last kingdom was better a lot better the acting the story line better
Lol i watched vikings first season in almost 2 months while i finished TLK 3 seasons in a Week
BTW Correct Yourself Ragnar Is Not Jon Snow A Superior In.Vikings
Both Were Hearts Of Show And Without Them Showd Mean Nothing But Ragnar Is Not Jon , Jon Is Jon , As Much As I Like Ragnar But Jon Snow Was Another Level ❤❤
Last kingdom is Ok… I got bored after the 8th episode of season 1 after a second time trying to watch it… Igz it isn’t for me but Vikings I’ve watched 3 times
It's better
I like both and or but Both endings not good
Villains in Vikings are so much better. No one is touching Ivar or even Rollo.
viking vahalla first season good but second is trash
Bootleg vikings
Having seen both series more than once, basically the opposite of everything you wrote is true.
"the Vikings" don't own vikings, and it's a comical and stupid characterization of vikings.
