  • my name's taylor and this is my ford transit van build!
    here's how i built a bed in my van using ikea's skorva beams!

    total cost: $65
    details
    steel beams, $50:
    i used 5 skorva steel beams from ikea. they’re telescoping, which is absolutely perfect to fit any width of the van and flex as you drive. BUT if you’re gonna buy these, ASK FOR THE BRACKETS WHEN YOU DO!!!!!! the beams are pretty useless without them and they’re not included unless you ask. oh and trying to get them shipped to you after the fact, nearly impossible. nearly.
    www.ikea.com/u...
    frame, $15:
    to install the beams, we bolted 2x8s into each side of the van using the 4 factory made bolt holes. silly puddy came in super handy for marking where the holes should be to pre-drill them (thanks to @seven_osavage for the inspiration - your build is amazing!). we’ll also probably be adding two plusnuts on each side, just to be safe.
    installing the steel beams:
    we measured and evenly laid out the 5 brackets on the 2x8s and secured them with screws. i actually used the brackets upside down since it worked better for my build. finally, the beams just sit into each bracket and that’s it! throw on your mattress, bedding, and you’re good to go!
    UPDATE: we cut pockets in the walls to help the mattress fit better and put a white 1 x 4 board across the front of the mattress to keep it from sliding forward.

      thank you!! it’s nice that it can work both ways and upside down worked better for my build! i will say they can pop out easier if you hit a big bump 😅 but ideally no bumps will be hit lol

    I was looking into a few videos on something easy to removed and was talking to the wife about the ikea crossbars but she didn't understand what I was trying to do, but luckily she saw your video and she's sold on the idea, Thanks

      i just found that the slats added extra support and since i’m using the brackets upside down it helps the beams stay in place a little better!

      ah glad it could help! 😊 for the most part they stay in place! if i hit a big bump, occasionally one or two will pop out of one side - hoping to make a fix for that soon and secure them! will share when i do :)

      I saw another person put a tiny piece of adhesive velcro over the hook end of the beams so that they were more snug once inserted into the brackets but also still easily removable

    What bolts did you use please

    • @thetayinthelife
      @thetayinthelife  8 месяцев назад

      to secure the 2x8s, i used screws that fit the factory made bolt holes and i believe the size ended up being M8-1.25. i don’t remember the length i used, but you’ll want one long enough to pass through the 2x8 and most of the threaded hole. i hope that helps!

  • @sunseeker8457

    Why add the wood to the side and THEN screw in the support to the wood?? Makes zero sense. Just screw the supports straight into the metal of the van. That's how many do it. That way you use the full extension of the Ikea frame!

    • @thetayinthelife
      @thetayinthelife  2 дня назад

      @@sunseeker8457 that would definitely work!! just wasn’t right for me! my build was constructed to use only the preexisting manufactured holes in the transit, rather than make new ones, which is why i took this approach 🙂
