Yeah, I think he's said he has the same feeling as most other DMs in that it's a bittersweet thing. He loves the inventiveness of his players, but it does mean he has to change up plans without letting on that he didn't plan for it.
@@bryanwoods3373 I wouldn't really call that creative though. They just always make sure they have it to prevent the big bad from hitting the whole party from getting hit or the big bad from getting away. Kudos to Matt for still letting them do it and not take away that moment
@@JohnyScissors I believe we're talking in the general sense and not specifically about Counterspell. The cast has made dozens of decisions and detours where Matt has said "well, okay then." This is why my sorcerer has subtle spell, enemy casters nearby as I'm trying to gtfo? Subtle spell, no hints I'm even casting a spell until it's done! Haha!
Subtle spell is great. "How dare you accuse me of trying to magically influence you? To any of the other people here, did any of you see me cast a single spell?" Or the Illusion variant of projecting your double somewhere else, "You didn't even notice I'm actually over here, did you?" Legitimately 100% sold that whoever that Drow was, they were there for the original audience w/ the Bright Queen, which is how they know Jester. Could be the Empire's rat. So even though it doesn't SEEM consequential on the service it could turn out to be an incredibly valuable clue (or a gigantic red herring).

Travis: "can i see him through the window?" Matt: "Yes, you see them go 'whoof' " Travis: "I'll cast counterspell." Matt: nooooo "Role a perception check!!!"
Nexsusthepro Specifically, I think, it was a perception check to see if Fjord would _know_ a spell were about to be cast. The same was done with Caleb’s Counterspell on Avantika; they need to be at least _reasonably aware_ that there’s a reason _to_ cast Counterspell to in-verse reasonably do so, otherwise people are walking around wasting Counterspell on actions that aren’t even castings, or missing the timing to do so. In-meta, yes, it’s being used as a reaction directly to what the DM says is “about to happen,” but the character needs some justification other than “I just randomly decided to use Counterspell in that specific direction at that point in time.”
Fjord had his attention on the dragonborn messenger that turn before, so it would have been in his perepheals. (or however you spell it) Im sure the majority of dms would have had a perception check be made there. If you have watched the later episodes of campaign 1 you would have seen many instances of counterspell being used in many different situations.
I don't think it was so much weather his eyes were working or not, but if he has the mental flexibility in the heat of the moment, and currently focused on the dragonborn, to both register that a spell is being cast from outside the room and justify the decision on the use of counterspell.
@@alecLogan I Dm, That was "DM Cucking" as its called. Travis confirmed with Matt something. Matt attempted to pull the rug from under him under the pretense of a dice roll. I mean, sheclearly has a reputation among certain types in Xhorhas - Which, incidentaly, is why we haven't heard about it sooner, they haven't really interacted with that element of Xhorhas yet
I have to wonder if Matt is ever going to give his own NPCs a counterspell gem to protect their escape spells from being countered. If I were a player I would think that a disposable Counterspell bracelet or necklace or ring or something would be invaluable. Just a one use item that can counter a spell. Save you from the deadly feeblemind or countering your teleport, or whatever. I know I would be building them, why not NPCs with access to magic and resources?
Mike Less a “coincidence” and more “why would the backroom sneak trade that specific information like it’s pillow talk?” The Scourgers likely don’t care for extraneous information not directly pertaining to their mission, and the sneak seems more the type to lord the fact he “knows shit you don’t know” rather than just spread that information around like it’s his job.
1:34 Doesn't Fjord cast counterspell at level 5 automatically? If so then he shouldn't have to roll for it to work (at least against Dimension Door). Also 07:38 T-shirt for Matt.
It was probably a level 3 dimension door, but since Travis didn't specify what level he was counterspelling at it's ultimately up to Matt's discretion. The way everything worked out was fair and in character; you can't really ask for more.
@@Legacy0901 doesn't need to specify a warlock automatically casts any spell at the highest level they have available which for Fjord is level 5. Using up 1 of the 2 spell slots he has available before needing to resort to eldritch blast and his hexblade.
@@alexiushendrickson7509 yeah, the spell used had to have been at least a 6th level spell, which would have had a DC of 16. Regardless of spell DC, Matt had him make a wisdom check, and not a spellcasting check as the spell calls for. So whether or not the spell was Teleport (the only spell above 5th level that doesn't create a visible rift to pass through. Though, does not require touch, which makes me think it was dimension door, at which point it should have been diffused immediately), Matt was doing something else that didn't have anything to do with what the spell says. Which is kind of fucky in my opinion, if it had the possibility of disrupting the spell.

I gotta say through all this the one thing that still irks me is that a 14 dispel breaks Nott out of charm, dominate person is a 5th level spell, so that drow upcast charm person at 4th level, which increases number of targets, why? Secondly charm person is not strong enough to make someone attack someone else they consider a friend, you could tell them to bugger off or go home but not to shoot their friend in the face, at that point they're fully capable of saying no. The best underappreciated line is Caduceus after he kills the Hobgoblin with the Sacred Flame: “Sleep”.
Every spell is a sleep spell if it does enough damage.
