I'm looking to buy the fiio m23 and I really don't want to spend the extra money on the m23 if the differences is not much in terms of music quality compared to a smartphone. My question is how do you compared a dap to a smartphone just for music? I never had the opportunity to listen to a dap before so I'm really curious about the differences. Thank you.
First, if it's a smartphone, unless it has proper amplification and shielding, it will generally sound crappy. Now if you use a simple dongle like those from apple, its actually way better then most think and is probably all you need for IEM. Going up to to high end Daps, normally its about ease of use, and slightly better quality in terms of sound stage, clarity and most importantly power. A competent DAP vs an apple dongle listening in low to mid volume will probably have not too much difference unless they have some special tuning and filter on the DAC itself which changes the perception of the sound.
Overall you can think of a DAP as a way to have a dedicated device, without the cables and possible interference from WIFI/5G, and a dac+amplifier thats more competent.
That said, an apple dongle is also enough for most of us. As much as I like to use high end stuff, the difference between the 10 dollar dongle and 1000 dap is small and better to invest into a better IEM/headphone.

Too bad all of these types of devices are over priced. No reason they should cost more than a phone.
Actually if anything they should cost no less then a modern phone or even more. Since their BOM is probably higher due to the exotic chipsets and material. If anything I think phones are really overpriced today haha.
