Thank you, thank you! I've been sewing and quilting for almost fifty years and learned something new watching this video. I'm pretty good at putting colors together but couldn't figure out why some combos looked better than others. The grey scale is what did the trick! How could I not have learned this before. I got my phone and looked at the blocks of my current quilt and seeing it in grey scale showed me immediately which blocks were wrong and why! OH MY GOODNESS! Can't say thank you enough.

I am so thankful that I found you! By the way my sister is also Karen Brown so it is definitely fate! I just got into quilting and I have been so overwhelmed that I was thinking of giving up and then I went on RUclips just to learn how to cut straight and found you. I have literally spent 2hrs watching your videos, trying things, and learning. You are an amazing teacher and you explain perfectly! I started crying when I was telling my husband that I feel better about quilting now and it is thanks to you! Thank you for making me not give up!

Don't give up! No matter how bad you think the end result is, you have grown from the experience. If you give quilts as gifts, I promise you the recipient will cherish it because it was made with love. Maybe you will find that quilting is not the creative outlet for you. That's ok, try something else. Everyone needs a creative outlet. It feeds the soul.

I have a lot of prints, and every time I'm working on another new project, I need some solid or tone on tone type fabric. So off I go to the fabric shop. Lately, to try to wart off the binge shopping, I started to pick up solids and tone and put them in a special place altogether. So far, it's working better, not perfect! But it's better!

Oh my gosh~~I'm so glad I found you! 55 years old and just completed my first simple quilt. I have all my mom's tools and just didn't think I had quilting in me. It is so intimidating. I also have my first quilt my mom made me which I insisted on all blues in light and dark in a "Log Cabin" style She tried her best to steer me away. It never really worked (and now I know why) although I loved the colors at the time. I also have a few unfinished quilt tops from great grandma's and aunts that I have carried along with me. Can't wait to learn and grow and finish them!!

Good Morning. ❤️❤️❤️I've put together a collection of exercises to help you get to know your fabrics. Fabric colour and pattern choices are so important when making a quilt or other sewing project. But since our projects take so much time, we actually don't spend much time practicing and discovering what works, what doesn't. These exercises not only will give you a chance to play, they will help build your foundational colour skills. So grab your timer and go. 😎

Hi Karen, your videos on color are the best I've ever seen. For some reason my brain has a hard time retaining the details of hue, value, etc. so I'm watching them more than once. These exercises will help a lot and might even get me out of that color/pattern comfort zone you talked about. In February I went to the fabric store with a friend who was choosing fabrics for a quilt for her son. The ladies in the store helped her pick 4 fabrics that I would have NEVER put together and her quilt is looking great. Here's hoping I can learn to do that! Hugs & prayers to you and your family!

Well here I am, now at almost 11am, and the only thing I have watched are YOUR videos. There are so many wonderful videos that you have that I just can't seem to stop. Thank you for this video. I'm not too bad with the color wheel, but still need to work on it. Many years ago, my infant son had a onsie that was a red and yellow check. I used to put his red socks on with that because red goes with red, right? Then we had his pictures taken and when we got them back, I was so disappointed, as well as embarrassed. He looked like he was wearing an orange onsie with red socks and oh boy did they clash! That taught me to look at colors better. 😀 I wasn't a quilter then, but I never forgot that lesson. Another wonderful teaching video to get my juices flowing. I love color but always find it a challenge to choose fabrics for a quilt. Your videos help me look and think about things in new ways. Thank you! I'm adding my 2 cents on a comment from another viewer about moving too quickly between examples. I would appreciate you keeping an example on the screen for 5 seconds or so. Sometimes I hear what you are explaining but my eye needs more time to see what you are talking about. I try pausing the video but then the picture is grayed out and any contrast is lost. I think this is what Judi was trying to say. Our eyes need a little more time for new concepts to connect with our brain. I hope this is helpful and doesnt come across as critical. Thanks, Karen.

Hi Karen, sending you a hello from Virginia. I am making a king size quilt as you go for my son and daughter-in-law. So as I sewed, I also used smaller pieces to make a quilt for me. So I tried using your color theory. I took black and white photos. What I found was astonishing. There were pieces that fell in a completely different place than I would have placed it. I'm still very far from being good at this color placement, but I'm learning. Stay safe.

Thanks Karen. I love playing with colour. Today I pulled out my precious batik collection, washed it and am now ironing it all. Such beautiful colours and designs.

Working on my third quilt ever right now and trying to pull from my stash as much as possible. This video and the color series has helped a ton in the process. Thank you!!

I know that feeling. I need to donate more fabric, but the charity shops aren't taking any. I must have enough for three more lifetimes. Not that I would like that many. 😉😊

What a wonderful surprise this morning! This was fascinating and covers an area that I am almost clueless about. Thanks for sharing all of this information is such a palatable way.

Thank you. I do need something like your color wheel cards to take shopping with me. I have such trouble picking out fabrics. I tend to forget what I'm doing a go for mostly medium sized prints. I go for mostly pinks and have very little to combine with anything. LOL. 😊

Your color lessons have taught me a skill that I thought was just a natural talent; you can do it naturally, or you just can’t. I’m still a newb but starting to figure it out. That color wheel looks valuable, I’m on it!

Be easy on yourself. Colour has three dimensions. And then you have the quilt design and fabric pattern for a total of at least 5. That's a lot to stuff into your brain.

You are a wealth of information. I love this stuff. I thought I was pretty good at making those choices, but I see how you discovered the underlying hue, so I'm going to get one of those more involved color wheels. It makes choosing fabrics so much easier. Interesting about the classes at home. I like being along-ish, but learning something new is always a rush. Thanks for posting.

Video played fine for me. I just wanted to say that I enjoy these types of lessons about color theory because I struggle with picking fabrics. I find myself wanting to choose matchy-matchy fabrics which does not allow for enough contrast. I thoroughly enjoy piecing the blocks but I know when my project is done that I could have made better fabric choices. BTW, your hair looks very cute today! Thanks!

Cindy McFarland This is me too. I tend to love high saturation mid tones and then it just doesnt have enough contrast. Working on this!

Thank you! This video is so helpful, I plan on watching it over a few times. I’m new to quilting but not to sewing and have always loved fabric. I was just saying to my daughter it sure looks like I’m buying all the same colors of fabric, you can see my favorite colors. I love your videos, they are so helpful for a newbie quilter like me.😃

Glad it was helpful! I also came from a sewing background and was quite surprised at the challenge of combining quilting fabrics.
