- Seymour Duncan has been making pickups for a long time - 1976 to be precise - and in that time he must have seen and heard Rock music change course many times. Lately, it has moved into some very strange tonal territory indeed, as the Metal maestros of Scandinavia have carved a new, dark sound out of the ice. Time for a new pickup aimed just at guitarists desperate to capture that sound - hence these two newcomers, the Black Winter humbuckers.
Holy crap I forgot I was watching a demo I was so mesmerized by his beautiful lead playing..
Just realized it is Rick Graham like no shit
MattThePenguin He's some guitarist is Rick.
me too
When the clean sounds distorted you know they're gonna be sick.
@Nick lmO
@Nick lmao
That's what I was thinking
"These are for Metal" - Plays Blues
Hahaha
My thoughts exactly!
metal originated from the blues sooo, not far off ig lol
Some times I listen to blues on Sirius XM "Bluesville", it's easy to find some shredding solos.
You can do the less you may do the harshest
Save your money, this guy will make any pickup sound good
Solomon Reid yet the pickups sound very good even for those of us who aren't close to as good as this guy. Definitely well worth the money.
Black Winter's are amazing pickups
@@bjornodinsson27 Very similar to SD Pegasus ?
@@bjornodinsson27 Amazingly like shit. I love my Duncans, hated these tho. Lots of output with the emphasis on the nasty shitty side IMO. Back em off, lower the gain, lower the mids, treble. Still sounded like shit to me
Anthony Davella seriously? any better pickups than SD for more gain and aggressive too? did you prefer?
this lead playing just led me to download 6 instructional videos. I want my legato to be this clean
Any luck so far?
@@kainfowler3686 yes
I got a black winter bridge recently and it's far and away the most diverse high output pup I've ever used. They're amazing for metal but they are not muddy like most "metal" pickups which means you can play all sorts of music with it (them).
+Robert Whelan (Wuzzard) Ripped out the active crap and rewired an old model 6 Jackson with BW bridge and Hot rail/cool rail with coil splits. New life in that guitar and is one of my main 6 strings to go to for havin fun doing what ever style. It just sings then spanks then crushes....all on one plank. Works for me
I'm looking to put some in my SG, I had emg 81/85 in it mostly for slipknot etc.. gonna put Emgs back in the Schecter and put these in SG... I'm excited to see how many diff tones I can achieve. Much more than just metal pickups but for metal it's exactly what im looking for... Very VERY excited. I feel like I can get solid lamb of god tones all the way to some bfmv to trivium... Just have to wait and see.
Totally agree. I was really surprised how nice it sounds when you roll the volume down a little too. Really versatile pickup. Getting ready to buy another one today actually.
Robert Whelan hi mate, how would you compare this to Duncan SH-6?.Thanks
Thanks man, that's actually what I needed to hear before pulling the trigger on a pair.
Oh my god this might be the best playing i've ever seen in a demo.
First of all, I gotta say, Rick Graham is definitely one of the sickest modern shredders around and this is probably the most accurate demo of the Black Winters on YT. Secondly, I recently installed both the SD Nazgul/Sentient(6 string) set and Black Winter set in my 2 favorite axes and goddamn, they bucking both sound fucking brutal! Death, slam, thrash, black, "djent"; they sound badass for all metal. There's another comment that points out that in this vid Rick plays mostly leads and honestly, that's what the BWs are better for. IMO go Nazgul/Sentient set for a rhythm guitarist and Black Winter set for a lead player. Either set, you can't go wrong.
brutaltxdm Same experience, I agree with all that. Both great pickups
I have to agree, although I use the Pegasus over the Nazgul personally, a little more articulate and colourful imho. All great pups by Seymour Duncan though!!
Has anyone tried a black winter / nazgul combo?
@@OGbrundle I am actually planning on putting the Nazgul bridge and Black Winter neck on my cheap Epiphone SG here soon. I will most likely post a video once I have it done
Your shreddage may vary.
Kevin Kraft I lost it at this comment.
Cracked me up :)))
Rick Graham is honestly one of my favourite guitarists of all time. The man's an absolute wizard.
Great to hear badass pickups demoed my a player that can really play. This guy not only shreds like a beast, but beautifully and melodically. Great sound overall!
If i could play like that i probably wouldn't "need" new pickups lol
This is the demo I've been looking for! I knew these pickups could do metal, but it's nice to see a review/demo where the pickups are utilized in a different context! I think I'm closer to being sold on this pickup set!
I agree. There are a ton of videos with these pickups doing metal, but it was this demo that sold me on them.
Yea.... I'm really tired of pickup demos being the same hi gain computer model that makes every guitar sound the same.
Wow. Some of the most impressive playing I've seen on a demo vid. Great job!
Wanted to learn about Black Winter pups and was instead inspired to seek an alternate profession LOL :-0
He absolutely killed it! I came for a demo on these pickups, and forgot about them completely. Great playing dude.
his playing steals the show, great stuff!
That's the best neck pickup clean sound I've ever heard.
Great Playing M8, Thanks for the video!
+Tech of Tomorrow Damn Elric, you're everywhere.
this has gotta be some of the best playing ive ever heard this is crazy good
Holy fucking shit this guy rips and is melodic/musical as well. Plays very clean as well cheers dude.
I just bought these based on the articulation I heard at 7:22 that’s EXACTLY the sound I’m looking out of a riff like that !
The more I watch this, the more I'm blown away by this mans playing.
I JUST PUT A SET OF BLACK WINTER PICKUPS IN MY JACKSON KELLY. WOW!!! HUGE DIFFERENCE FROM THE SEYMORE DISTORTION I WAS USING. THESE WINTERS ARE SO PRECISE AND YOU CAN HEAR EVERY LITTLE THING YOU DO WITH THE PICK. SHRED HEAVEN!!!!!! CHORDS SOUND POWERFUL AND CLEAR. EVERY NOTE IS AUDIBLE. I`M BLOWN AWAY!!! WELL WORTH THE MONEY!
that finger economy is very tight
u not lyin.....
that legato is buttery as fuck bro
Fuck man, your playing is ridiculous! Thanks for the demo, great sounds
came to watch a review and ended up being a fan of this guys playing! Amazing!
thanks for the free guitar lessons. very smooth articulated playing with crunchy dark metal tones.. Em RULES!!
The first review I've seen Rick do. The man could make a living off of videos like these. Keep'em commin'
You sir can play ! forgot I was watching a review I am truly inspired
Crikey, rarely you see someone playing so well while making it look so completely effortless.
Yeah outstanding playing!! I like this demo because it is not all tuned down to the lowest of lows where you really can"t hear the real tone of the pickups and guitars.I will be buying a bridge model next week to put in my Esp eclipse, going to sound badass!
3:50 "I want to try some lead now, uh... on the neck position" - Melts the internets face right off
You my friend are one bad dude !!! and thank you very much for everything .....
Holy Shit this guy can play.
The cleans are the real surprise.
What's neat is this pickup appears marketed towards extreme metal, but they can do hair metal, hard blues, shred, and are very musical sounding even in saturated high gain.
Sick! The pup's have a brilliant warm sound with a killer growl
Dude is way too good.
My god.
Flawless technique, great pickups.
Thank you brother !!!!!! Dammm thats some beautifull playing. Those pickups are killer too. Your very inspireing !!!!!!!!
im getting these pickups for my squier jim root tele. i like them because the midrange is very articulate and they have a great breakup when cranked. they also have a really nice twang to them. im gonna add a push pull pot for coil splitting and im sure there gonna sound insane.
Does anyone else feel it's a disservice to the pickups to relegate them only to metal? They sound so versatile
Awesome video!
Would you do a Nazgul and Pegasus as well? Lot of people would appreciate it.
What a great playing and technique Mr.E. Also great presentation of pickups. Thank you.
I'm Mr.E and I didn't play anything XD
Dude is totally rad tho. Busted my chops when he gave that lil country riff bout halfway through
Rick Graham..the best pickups reviewer especially active pickups. Thanks for the video. Definitely I will put this black winter on my toy.
These pickups sound incredible. Btw for peopl saying these pickups are made for Heavy Metal (subgenres included). Heavy Metal is completely based on blues and some elements of jazz.
This guy is a hell of a player. Those licks were super tasty
A review on youtube that includes an opinion. Thank you! The reviewer is in the room with them and we get to hear them after tons of compression. Way too many people show musical instruments and studio gear without actually giving an opinion. I may pick up a set now.
I have a shop floor custom set of these in white sitting in a white Ibanez RGT42DX.
The thing absolutely rips.
I would love to get my hands on them in a set of white. I have a solar killer tone with them in it and it slays. But I need a white set to go in my beans split tail
Beautiful guitar I have been on my own and I was so excited
Fuck, I should really be practicing
Guys, I actually have one of these in the bridge position of an ESP Ltd Black Metal EC (single cut ) & I have to say.....it's a glorious sounding PUP, seriously one of the best I've ever heard. I'm going to buy a set to put in my V .....everything he said/played/demonstrated etc. is dead on accurate as to how great these sound. I don't think he detailed his actual rig he did this demo through, but suffice to say they sound great through anything. For the high gain guys ( like me ) .... you're going to love these.
yeah this is the review what I wanted!
Excellently explained!
This dude is amazing!
Nice! I wanted to hear these pickups in a more regular tuning.
Love the playing. ❤
I 'm strongly considering these pickups. Love the way they sound. Thank you for the review. Nice playing by the way. Not just constant shredding like most other reviews I watch, you do some Chord work which I did a lot.
You also let the sound ring out so you can really listen. Great job!!!
WTF that was smoth as hell
I had the Black Winter humbuckers installed in my Vista Jagmaster recently. I've traded and sold quite a bit of gear because of these assholes, but I will say that I don't regret my decisions. Got a fucking nice Marshall JCM900 mkiii 2500 head and a cheap Marshall cab as a result of my frustration with these humbuckers! It took me enough digging to learn that the mid and high frequencies are pretty damn high on them, which can create a fizzy tone.
Best way to avoid this on high gain amps: lower the mids and treble until you don't hear that fizz anymore. If you use an EQ pedal as well, I wouldn't recommend going above -3db on the mids and treble.
I hope this helps anybody that runs into that problem as well.
+Gewell Nabe You are correct my friend. Most Guitar players will crank volume & tone to 10...That's the wrong way for these Black Winters. My amp settings for the mids & treble are both on 2 and 2 and use my volume & tone controls to find that sweet spot... for these amazing pickups! I Luv them & have them on 3 / 15 of my guitars. Keep Rock'en! I got your amp too Plus the T.I 100 Laney head & cab... Tony Iommi \m/ \m/
That neck tone is godly
I'm definitely interested in this set, but to be fair, Rick could make a potato sound amazing
cleans are very very opeth
haha that's what i thought
I think the riff just sounded a lot like "In My Time Of Need"
Exactly my thoughts.
I thought he was going to start playing in my time of need
sweet devil you can shred
what was this review about again?
this dude fucking shreds..
didnt xpect to see Rick here. back againnnn hahahaja.
This is so nice even with "non-metal" genres.
+tealkly They are great all around!
You sir, just shredded that guitar
The effort shall be honored in Award Giving Ceremony and we business graduates and aviation, army become great fan of pick-up. We proposed to get this as a product in CD,MP4.5.6 or any other formatt in joint collaboration with Norton kind of brand or any other channel and I am sure this end product may give us life.
I like the way these sound
Getting a black winter and full shred put in my RG. It’s gonna sick.
I really like the sound of those and the playing was great too!!👍🔥
What the hell was that first chord progression (clean setting, arpeggiated)? I need more of that, immediately!
These pickups sound great.
''Rick Graham'', such an Amazing Guitarist!! One Of my Fav. Guitarist Definately.....
Got chills watching and hearing his Playing, His Guitar technique is totally out of this World!!
That clean neck pickup sounds beautiful. I might have to put that in my Schecter. Can anyone help me recreate the tones he had during the first clean neck demo? All I have for effects is a Line 6 GX with pod farm.
very good player - they sound great with sustain
I've not been a huge fan of most SD pickups and prefer Dimarzio. I do enjoy the Distortion and Jazz combo in my Les Paul but that's it. I've sold most of my SD's over time until the Black Winter. These pickups have instantly became my absolute favorite pickup of all time. They're right up there with my other fav's from Dimarzio. I would equate them with the Dimarzio Tone Zone/Air Norton combo.
Great playing as always. Would have liked to hear the sound of a real amp and no reverb.
I totally forgot I was watching a pickup review.
Also, Andy from pro guitar shop should watch this. But no hate on Andy, he's really the only guy I trust.
Damn!!! with the sick licks!!!
dude you are a skilled player for sure !
Way too much reverb and delay on the high gain tone, makes it very hard to really hear what the pickups sound like.
I was wondering when pickups starting having delay in them lol...
totally the wrong Guy for reviewing extreme METAL focused Pups and yeah reverb is just coloring the sound too
dont know whats wrong with you guys, i enjoyed it alot tone wise. probably if you havent already then check out ola englunds review of them. i think it was a great demo
Maxime Boivin I would prefer to hear both, went and dry signal
"Oh look this amp has a reverb knob." Turns all the way to 11..." Let's review some pickups now kids"
Beautiful playing
Incredible playing 🤘🏻
This man loves to play lol. Anyone who plays can appreciate those clean sweeps.
This guy is such a master
Wow that went from, what are black winter pickups to OMG what is he doing there. running for my guitar. shred beast!!!
Hell Yeah! I got to get me a pair of these...Black Winter
That was sick!
wow! very very clean man!
I thought I was good at leads until I watched this video.
Dude , we got the same guitar !! Just bought a Swede this year and had to do a WHOLE lot of work to it...replaced the
tuners with Grovers, replaced the nut with bone and filed the slots properly, shaped the frets, changed the saddle to a roller, shielded the cavity and now we come to pickups. The bridge pickup could use a little more of what I was hearing in that Dark Winter but before investing, can I ask, when you are demonstrating the high gain sound, is your amp running hot, medium or ??? I'm trying to gauge how much of that is the actual pickup. Thanks
beautiful.what amp and effects do you use? if you want to say of course
it is great to see rick graham do this.... i like this bridge pick up. i can't decide which is better between the sh-11 and this one. there is no comparison video i can find. rick is awesome.
What guitar are you using? I can't read the headstock :)
SO many demo videos on youtube claim to be demo-ing a guitar or the pickups, then just shred away as if theyre the best in the wrld & the actual demo gets a bit neglected kinda. ... Would be nice to see how long a single string would sustain, a chord , how well you can hear the pick on the string etc.
the tone is in your fingers, but still, the pu tone brings us the foundation..SeyDun Black Winter is warm and i think i need it
Uggg he shouldnt have added the reverb and delay on the lead playing cos it improves the sound of any pickup a lot and makes it harder to tell. That being said it sounds really great lol
terrific guitar playing!
