People criticize him for not improvising but man he take a lot of risk in playing, unlike most people who play safe stuff and didn't step out of their own comfort zone.
He really push it, that's why he sounded so great and emotional.

I was fortunate enough to see Gato at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York three months before he died. He was 8 feet from me. Cannot describe what that night meant to be. Between a couple of songs, he and the bank were discussing what should be played next. I heard him tell them, I can build on anything. The depth of that statement took a while to soak in for me. But, I now understand that he could, in deed, play anthing.
