There is one quality of her musicianship that rarely gets mentioned on these pages: she's an inventive soloist. Too many players just run changes or memorized patterns-- she makes original music, and her solos are always interesting, which is what improvisation is all about, or should be.
That's what happens when you learn from Joan and the rest. The memorized solos that the kids start with in the SAJB are all original and melodic and the standard is set. When you add in all of the solos she's heard from top flight players and encouragement from them, there you go. (Me on the other hand, a living room amateur must continually watch myself to keep from just running the changes.)
