This typewriter looks pretty cool! The function of "typing" the letter is amazing (although, as others say, it would definitely be better if it could actually write). Thanks for showing us how it works :D!
I built this LEGO kit and it is really challenging; not for a beginner. It comes with a pad of sample letters that can be put into the carriage for display. All letters say the same thing but each is in a different language.
I got this for Christmas (very lucky lady) and it is my first ever Lego (59 years old) I will be honest I struggled and restarted 3 times on the keyboard but getting there now.
oh damn I'm jealous, yours seems to work so smoothly. With mine, the function works, but is definitely less smooth, especially the carriage doesn't move reliably.
I cannot get the gear mechanism to function properly. The main gear doesn’t have enough tension to fluidly move when you strike a key and I cannot figure it out 😫
The "main portion" is called the "universal bar", and the mechanism for advancing the carriage is called the "escapement", much similar to the one used in the clock. Real typewriters use a spiral mainspring and a drawband for pulling the carriage along instead of a compression spring in a piston to push it. Having the typewriter actually type would have as one commenter mentioned needed custom type element tiles for impressing the letters, which would have been cool, but is bound to have increased the price of the set per the need for custom molds, mind the cost of all the linkages to get those typebars moving. To fit all the typebars needed and allow all of them to strike the same spot, a dual-row layout similar to the Fox visible typewriter might be needed, whereby the Lego design would start to depart much further from the usual in design and appearance, but still be a fascinating novelty.
Disappointed that it does not print at all. I wonder if you could buy a cartridge that would fit would be good but I suppose the keys would not be in the correct position . Otherwise I think it looks good. Not sure if I would buy it though as expensive
Nice review. I appreciate the honest opinion, including the addition of the downsides (generally the reviews are positive only, but a good portion of little imperfections is good!)
Just finished this set and really enjoyed it. I had an issue with my carriage that i was wondering about. So as i was building it, i would obviously mess around with the keys and do some “typing” as i went to make sure the keys are moving properly and all that. The problem came when i went to add the carriage. I think since i was messing around typing before i added the carriage mechanism, it may have put the carriage on too far to the right. Like, it doesn’t sit in the middle of the page when it runs out of room and needs to be reset almost like it wasn’t centered correctly when i put it on. The result is that i push the carriage all the way to the right, and by the time i run of out of keystrokes and need to push the carriage back to the right, the carriage has only moved to the left a small amount. It’s final position before needing to be pushed back is way off center from how it should look. One thing I was wondering about is if there is any way for the carriage springs to be “reset” somehow so that I can realign it and it will finish its keystrokes with the carriage properly in the center instead of still being close to the right side. I can’t really explain it very well, but I just want the carriage to be in the center of the typewriter by the time it needs to be reset. Is there any way to “zero out” the springs to adjust the final position of the carriage?
Here’s the thing. A standard typewriter that has a full keyboard, 2 shift keys, and an adjustable ribbon setting, has far over 1,000 pieces. In order to make a typewriter that can carry out all the functions of a typewriter, out of lego, the set would be incredibly bulky, and have an insane amount of pieces. On top of that, there would have to be a ton of custom pieces that would drive the price through the roof. If you wanted to make a fully functional lego typewriter, you would probably go with a more simple machine than a standard typewriter. Something like the 1893 American index.

No mention of the lack of a gearbox?
it's not a technic set :)
3:33. The letter is actually not from the CEO of lego. It’s from Thomas Kirk kristiansen who is the lego groups’s owner family.
but isn't the owner of lego also the CEO?

Too sad that the LEGO Typewriter can't actually type something on a paper.
