@@Thouveninpascal Dinah was much more famous, with good reason. Sue is a jazz & studio singer not nearly as well known with the public. Still, she's arguably the greatest living jazz singer residing in LA, now that Sinatra, Crosby, & Shore are gone.
Mike Wofford is an under appreciated American Jazz Legend as are all these gorgeous and gifted artists. What a tragedy that this country that gave birth to Jazz does not fully appreciate what a treasure it is and something that only a few of us seem to truly take time to listen to and learn about. I know this might sound preachy and/or lofty to some, but to me it is just a shame. Everyone in this quartet is still performing somewhere in this country or abroad regularly and often is better understood and loved in other countries. Still, if you are reading this, I am probably preaching to the choir. So bless you and others who care about jazz. I hope there is a renaissance of the fine arts in this country, because one cannot have a well rounded life or the brain development that is possible without exposure to them. No s$@& folks. It's right up there with global warming and the environment.
I am forever grateful for this vdo. I love Sue Raney to my heart and have been listening to her on vinyls and CDs for decades. Her place in the world of great vocalists is so underrated. But she's always among the greatest singers ever in my list.
I just discovered Sue Raney a few days ago. I cant believe i missed her all these years. She ranks up there with Sinatra, Bennett,Fitzgerald, Beverly Kenney, Chris Connor...just beautiful! A treasure!...great pianist who is also underated Mike Wofford who has been on the scene for years.
Woke up with Ridin High in my ear this morning and am so happy to find a recording of it on You Tube. Thanks for uploading! I used to see Sue at Le Cafe in the San Fernando Valley of LA in the 80's. Love so much.
Sue once commented that she took some stylistic cues from the late Eydie Gorme. But with far greater jazz instincts, she has a dimension that grabs you and won't let go. I can't imagine a more enjoyable nor talented singer of this genre. What a gift she shares.
After hearing Sue with the Four Freshmen on It Could Happen To You. Standing there with the guys I realized Sue looks like my 2012 crush Liz Star. That made me crown Sue my 2018 crush. No going back. She sings romantically & straight ahead jazz - both are super.
I as the daughter of the greatest singer of them all jimmy roselli and a singer myself have loved sue raine y for as long as I can. Remember I use to follow her around NYC whenever she came to town a wonderful voice to be reconditioned with one of the most underated ladies in this business love anne
THIS IS F%$KING AMAZING!!! i have never heard of this woman and i grew up in California!!! weird!! so glad one can discover these GEMS on youtube!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks so much for the uploads!!!! She is now almost #1 on my list of amazing female vocalists that have been lost from our memory.
I know! I grew up listening and collecting jazz/vocalists since i was fourteen in 1958. I dont know how i missed her! Now she is one of my alltime favorite vocalists!!
Stay tuned: I'm interviewing my dear friend Sue for my next book. And yes in my opinion Sue is a national treasure. Note she is still singing, and working on projects. jamesrspencer.com/
I've loved her for years, and was thrilled to find this video since I've never had the pleasure of hearing/seeing her live. Thanks for this great post!!!
One of the best kept secrets in music...except to musicians, that is. Miss Raney's voice gets better with age. And her choice of music is impeccable. Keep on keepin' on.
Sue is a truly gifted singer. Amazing. I first heard her many many years ago, when she did a recording with the jazz band of the US Air Force, The Airmen of Note. The band's founder and leader for decades, CWO C. Fred Kepner, was my instructor in arranging and orchestration. Hearing her sing brings back so many wonderful memories. She is one classy woman.
Just ran across Sue Raney from audio clips of her with a Dallas-Ft. Worth area big band (Harvey Anderson Orchestra) and like so many of you, wasn't familiar with the name, but am absolutely blown away by her jazzy vocals and incredible musicianship---no wonder instrumentalists from the DFW area loved working with her!
Stunning video. I've always had a soft spot for Sue Raney - terrific (intelligent!) vocals... Clearly a woman who knows & understands her vocal instrument (and wow - what an amazing instrument it is, too)! Truly - a pleasure to watch & listen to this classy woman.
William S. Cherry I spent over ten years studying with Wonderful Sue Raney and felt that I had the best Not only the greatest Vocalist. A wonderful person Thank you dear Sue. Gail
Why Sue Raney isn't the best known singer, is way beyond me. She is absolutely the BEST! Just love her!
a
she is very good
Yup!
Please , stop with " the best", "best ever"... made in America patterns . We talk about talent, it is enough.
Anyway, we love her . As you.
@@ericdreizen1463 She & Dinah Shore? Is it a joke, or is it a competition?

She is so unbelievably good!
That's Mike Wofford on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, and Jim Plank on drums.
Andy Rathbone you said it all. Can't do better in the entire world as a jazz quartet!

Very good show Sue Raney!!!
The pianist is awesome. Listen at how crisp his runs are. Amazing. And he keeps perfect meter. Wow!
He is.

Sue Raney is the best female vocalist - period!

This may be the definitive reading of "Skylark". I had never before heard Ms. Raney sing this song. It is a stunning performance.
This was part of a series of jazz broadcasts from Elario's in La Jolla, CA from the PBS San Diego station.
When would this have been?

Excellent --- And the pianist is awesome!
My all time favorite singer. And I ain't changing my mind!!
Great Jazz Singer. Although she has recorded pop music as well. She has over 20 LPs and numerous singles on major record labels.
Happy 80th Birthday today to Sue Raney, the singer with the warmest and most mellifluous tones ever to make a recording or to perform a club date.
Superb musicianship.
Incredible artist! I just bought her first album she recorded in 1958 when she was only 18 years old.

OMG! Skylark > Poor Butterfly (!) This must be heaven...
'Poor Butterfly' must just about be the longest survivor in this sort of repertoire, being written in 1916!
She is simply brilliant and is perhaps the greatest singer ever - period!!!
Sue Raney ROCKS!!!!!

I have a vinyl album with her singing Cinnamon and Clove. Impossible to find on iTunes, Spotify etc. One of my favourite tracks of hers.
Went to high school with her in Albuquerque, she sang at my college in Los Angeles, really nice person and SO talented!

I love her voice! She sang with the four freshmen “It could happen to you”. Beautiful voice!
Great performer!!
Sue Raney is superb, and her stylistic range is amazing. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.
Gotta be Mike Wofford on piano...how nice!
She is wonderful -- I loved her voice at age 18 and her fuller voice now -- she's about the best female soprano I know today!
One of my all-time favorite singers!
135 thumbs up..Zero dislikes. That's Sue Raney.
Up to 190 as of 3-16-21! (:
Sue Raney can simply out sing most other singers...
The piano deserves better concerning its tuning
