    The first interlude of Das Rheingold becomes airy and fluttery, rising higher as we ascend into the bright sky to meet the gods of the story. The second interlude has us dive down below the earth into the dark of gloom and doom to meet dwarves that have been enslaved and tortured.

    I hadn't realized that the tubas introduce the "Destiny Accepted" (Donnington 79) motif this early in the opera. It is, of course, much more obvious in scene 4 when Wotan realizes that he will have to deal with Alberich's curse.
