"CHARLOTTE TILBURY IS OVERRATED"

  • Over the years on my channel, I've found a lot of ways to assert that Charlotte Tilbury's makeup was overrated, overhyped and overpriced. But I've also had UNCANNILY bad luck testing her products out, in ways that weren't always the fault of the products themselves. So I decided to overcome my cynicism, spend a TON of money on Charlotte Tilbury's website, and see for myself if the viral products and the enduring HYPE (read: TIK TOK) is actually legit.

I was turned off by this brand early on because every product I tried looked orange, patchy and sparkly on my fair skin. It took me back to the vampy orange “it girl” makeup that pervaded every US high school in the early 2000s… the stuff that paired well with the Victoria Secret body spray that smelled like you were running a brothel inside of a coconut. I guess that’s not a vibe I care to return to 😂 That or, more likely, CT makeup just isn’t a fit for my skin tone.

I also agree. Some good products but mostly they are mediocre... pretty packaging, striking names, and some pretty colors. Notice that EVERYTHING (well, almost) is extremely warm toned. Even the cool toned lipsticks have a strong orange base. Pillow talk looks like peanut butter on me.

The Magic Cream has been broken down by skincare experts and it is one of the most criminally over-priced products on the market. I can understand the cult appeal though because of the lore around it and because a lot of people who use makeup and don't really worry much about skincare can benefit from using a basic moisturizer. It's great that she popularized hydrating before doing anything with makeup, which is not something people were doing back in the day. Now everyone is moisturizing before they put makeup on...Also: her packaging rocks. There is an old school Hollywood glam vibe from it that just makes it feel expensive and exclusive...I think I buried the lead on this but, your strategy for choosing under-eye concealer is impeccable. I have noticed as I get older that very bright concealer does more harm than good. I've been using the wayne goss foundation that matches my skin, a thin layer over a little color correction and it does the trick. A light hand with powder and I usually try to have quite blown out eyeliner anyway. The not perfected look, with a little help is my friend.

I think the fact that her personality is so interwoven into it has made it really easy for me to avoid ever buying anything from this brand. There so many awful testimonials about working for her during pull-up-for-change that I just picture her screaming at staff every time I’m tempted to give her my money. (I’m sure tonnes of brand owners are like this, they just aren’t so integral to the marketing)

Love this! I have had no luck with any of her products that I’ve tried - except for her pressed setting powder which I do like because it works well for my dry skin. I used the Flawless Filter (used up the whole bottle) and never felt it made my skin look any better with or without foundation. Every lipstick and liner I tried was so dry (only tried the mattes) I could not use them and I love matte lipsticks. Just not CT matte lipsticks. Her mascara smudged terribly on me and her magic cream worked no magic on me. However, based on how much I like her pressed face powder I’ve always wanted to try the Filmstar compact because the shade looks nice and cool toned. But I’m tired of being disappointed by my CT purchases.

#1 “overhyped makeup, mad I spent money on it” was a Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow quad (the green one-Rebel). I can’t tell if I just got a dud or what, but everyone else completely raves about them. I did hear somewhere that they were reformulated shortly after I got it, and I’ve since tried some of her other color cosmetics that I actually liked quite a bit, but I have enough eyeshadow that I know I love already, so that isn’t something I’m willing to retry.
All of that said, I really appreciate your point about how her branding strategy has essentially become de rigeur. I hadn’t really thought about that, but CT really did pave the way for other brands, especially makeup artist-owned ones, to do what they do.

I've tried around 40 Charlotte Tilbury products (counting different shades in the same range) and I love 1/3 of them, i like 1/3 of them and the remaining 1/3 are pretty bad or unusable for me. Some things were gifts or things handed down to me by my mum so it wasn't all bought with my preferences in mind, and the stuff I picked myself tends to be the stuff I like more. I think her base products are okay at best (the setting spray is very effective though), and her mascaras, brow products etc. are unremarkable. Her lipsticks have some nice nuanced colours, but formulas can be hit or miss, the eyeshadows are pretty but only worth the price if you can find a quad/palette where you'll use all the shades, and her blushes and highlighters tend to be well formulated. It's not the sort of brand where trying everything is worth it, but there are some unique shades and innovative formulas, these are just becoming more readily available and at cheaper price points now

I am a tan girl with matured (53) skin so the way you described the CT made me think of the HR ambient powders I have. maybe the HR I have serve the same purpose and I don’t need to buy CT? CTs lack of tan friendly eyeshadow quads (for the longest time) and the initial launch of the film star bronze and glow and pillow talk has always annoyed me and end up side eyeing and not trusting the subsequent tan girl releases.😛

I was so confused because everyone said how nice and balmy and non-sticky it is and I thought it was super thick and sticky. It also wouldn’t apply evenly and kind of skip on the inner part of my lips that wasn’t super dry. It probably didn’t help that it was my first time trying pillow talk and it just doesn’t suit me that well but it reminded me of a rather smooth glue stick ^^

I tried more stuff than I'd like to admit... Flawless filter- mwah, lovely, used up a bottle of fair shade (im not super fair but its the only light shade that isn't fkin orange), took me 3yrs. The giant wand gave me the ick so i transferred it into an airless pump. Spotlight highlight wand- something was off with this, it's pretty and smooth but I guess a bright highlight doesn't look great on me. I share the sentiment with oyster pearl cream eyeshadow, such an underwhelming thing in terms of being dimensional, blends out into murky mess, creases, doesn't play well with my brushes and it also leans warm on me... i will probably finish it in 100 years. I have a favorite tho, lip stain in shade blushed rose, a site exlusive. I prefer using stains as blushes, stays all day, gives a pretty glow and it's such a pretty nude pink muted shade that's pretty impossible to find in the world of tints. Don't want to support the woman tho and buy anything new so I'm on the lookout for resells. Still want to try the cream bronzer in fair shade, prob the most olive bronzer I've seen and repurchase filter in shade 4 as an olivey bronzer-highlight-glowything to put on the perimeter of the face

I love to mix Light Wonder and Beautiful Skin foundations together! Wowza! The lipstick shade Very Victoria, is a nice mauve color, if one likes cool toned lippies. And as a dry skin person... I'll take the CT glow, all day. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 The only time I use her skincare, is as an assured working base for her foundation to lay on top of. On the regular though, I favor medical grade skincare... 👍

Hey Kackie, this is pretty off topic of this video, but as our Tubing Mascara
Queen do you have any recommendations for a similarly easy-to-remove/low residue eyeliner formula? I have terribly sensitive eyes and I'm trying to find something sort of similar to those formulas that washes off pretty cleanly.

I’ve never been into her complexion products though.

I like a lot of CT beauty products ( adore her mascara HFF and eyes to mesmerize pencils) but her magic cream and the white clay mask are bs. I spent years literally years trying to justify buying her magic cream and finally bought it. Omg 🤬🤬🤬 and the hidden sunscreen bugged me no end because I wanted it for the night but couldn’t because of that unnecessary sunscreen. Honestly the Rephr moisturizer is miles and miles and miles …and even more miles….better. And the CT white clay mask is rubbish. A lot of the Asian face masks come with ears and/or also a way to get the chin portion to hook around the ears so I guessing this CT mask is the same. What is inside that matters but I have been so burnt by CT skincare that I am not willing to pay her for it.😕

CT products are TERRIBLE. Everything seems to be orange. The products are poor quality and overpriced. I'd rather buy from Dior, Hourglass, Cle De Peau, and Pat Mcgrath. Far superior products for the same price point. Everything I've bought from CT I've hated. The ONLY plus point is in the UK, they accept used returns. Most companies here don't
