This video just saved me at least $150. I had a broken plug stuck in my motorhome 12v socket and couldn't for the life of me figure out how to pull the socket. Now I don't have to pay an RV repair person $$$ to unscrew it and pull the stuck piece out. I couldn't find anything about the socket I could see, and as soon as you said FORD I ran out and fixed my problem.
We actually put one of those in my dad's 1962 Willy's CJ3B jeep. Lol. It works very well. It is used for the beaten on the roof so everyone can see us when we snow plow at night in the winter. So glad we have it. Thanks for making the video. Really appreciate it 65FORD.
this was really helpful, my 76 Fairlane only has the one cig lighter so this is going to make my life loads easier, now I just need to find somewhere to stash the ports where they aren't going to stand out too much!
I'm stoked that a ordinary guy like me, would show the rest of us, something to improve our lives and make life a bit easier. I'm ready to wire up my extra 12v outlets
I just bought the exact same dual socket 12v adapter but for indoor use with my 12v converted pc power supply. I found it easier to program addresses into my old GPS indoor before I get into the car. Plus it'll be easier to use other 12v devices indoors when more sockets are available.
+Wes Shaw Yeah, those little buggers have been the culprit for failed wiring more than a handful of times. They're easy though and quick so people love them. If you coat them in dielectric grease they will last 10 fold but still no where as good as a solder joint.
Good idea, those quick connectors are a bane to humanity. They can last longer coated with hot glue but only in desperation. You know how bad they are when you can't use them under the dash.
Yes and no. It's more about home much power you're pulling all together. Charging cell phones takes very little and you could probably have 2 dozen on the same circuit.
sixtyfiveford: but no harm in it, right? For example: with this unit: www.amazon.com/dp/B00PXAMYTC/?coliid=I239YRXPNEYAL6&colid=3FIM1HG0RSI2W&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
Magic power box ..hard wire your dash cam to your car without the use of a Cig lighter ..The perk is it is on a double timer ..If my volts run under 11.6v (still can start the car/truck) Or after 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, hrs it shuts off depending on the setting you set it at on the box My phone i charge at home before getting in the car aswell i have a portable battery that also charges the phone which gives me power for 1.5 days of full use
It was easy to change things in these old cars. But I'm driving a 2011 Chevy Spark nowadays and everything's custom fixed in the dash. I can't even get an off the shelf radio to fit in there 😢 Think I'm just going to take a lighter plug and use a thick wire to run to a couple of these double sockets.
good one Moe. It is funny how technology changes things, I now have four suction cups on my windshield to attach stuff , I am running out of room to see.:)
That's cool. So I can just solder from the original plug directly to the new one. I pretty much want to do what you're doing. Just keep the dashcam plug behind the dash. Don't need to see it ever unless I'm removing the cam.
Nice and clear instructions. I am no electrician, so this might sound like a silly question - I'm currently using cigarette lighter splitter in my single outlet, but I get this annoying buzzing sound whenever I use both bluetooth adapter for music and LED's at the same time. Would soldering second outlet like shown in your video make a difference or it would be same as with splitter? Thanks
Also not an electrician but what you need is a ground loop isolator. Its a 1:1 transformer that isolate the ground noise from going into our bluetooth receivers. Its just a small box that plus in before the AUX socket. Give it a try if you still have the car!
Another great video, thanks for sharing. What would you do for more outlets but for continuous power like when you are working at nite and want to run some higher voltage plug in lights or other stuff? Thanks.
+Superiorpowerwash You can just run it straight from the battery or out of the fuse block from a fuse that retains power all the time(like the headlights).
I agree, I hate those little crimp on " wire taps" you only have a very thin piece of metal making contact with the wire. I just cut, strip and tape, I have solder but it is junk, I got rid of my good solder when I cleared out my shop, guess I should buy some good solder...LOL
Talk more about why you run a dash cam and what model you run. I have been thinking about buying one as I drive a lot for work. Cool video. My old camper has a cigarette outlet in the camper and on the outside. They are very handy. The pervious owner did some great mods.
The first thing they taught in soldering class, mechanical connection first then solder. Also you need to stager the connections in case the insulation wears out. Good video otherwise.
OK so I’m interested in running a auxiliary cigarette lighter to the rear part of my vehicle. What are some things I should look out for? My vehicle is also cursed with the one cigarette lighter also. Which makes it a pain in the butt when road trips are happening.
Just buy an lighter with shape easiest for you to add on place u want, get 2 wires, connect them behind lighter u have already and find best way for wires to rear part of car, thats all..
+W. Gator Not really unless you are overloading it with multiple high drain devices(heaters). Most plug in devices wont come close, even when combined, to blowing the fuse. If you do blow fuses you'll need to run a completely different dedicated power line from the fuse block. Adding a larger fuse would put the stock wiring in the circuit in danger of melting in a overload situation as itself is only rated for certain amperage. This car has a 15amp fuse which is very standard. Spotlight: 4.1amps, Defroster 8amps, Dash cam: 0.5amps, Cell Phone Charger 0.5amps. So even with these 4 devices I could still charge another cell phone or two.
+sixtyfiveford Thank for the quick response. What was on my mind was adding extras to my snow machine for GPS, 1 million candle power spot light, etc. There was a 3A fuse in there and I upped it to 5A. Guess I should run a fused line right from my battery, or maybe relay it off the ignition, huh! thanks again, Real fine job on your video,(as usual). Being a cheap item there is going to be poor quality control so buy a model that is Prime so Amazon will take it back effortlessly if there is a problem. I bought my first one for Christmas last year for $22 and loved it so much I bought a second a few weeks later for $18(exact same). I have almost a year on both and have been immensely pleased. I wanted something cheap hanging for people to see and not a $200-300 piece of tempting car jewelry for thieves. Being cheap I even spray painted the entire thing flat black so it is less noticeable. I am going to buy 2 more and mount them rear facing. I haven't had any major issues and both are used on a daily basis.

And even if I did catch the plate, it is going to be more than likely a stolen vehicle so there's no recourse with the owner of the license plate/car. The cigarette lighter sockets all turn on with the ignition so whatever is plugged into them also turns on. This is the norm with most sockets in cars.
I swear every time you make a video, there's always one more thing I have to add to my to do list lol. I've been looking at different dash cameras for about a month and a half now trying to decide which one I want. Have you ever done a review on yours?
You can't just add a bigger fuse because the wire running it is rated at whatever fuse is in there right now. I'm assuming you want to run in inverter or something like that. You need 20 to maybe even 30 amps and the easiest way to do that is to run a 10 (30amps) or 12 (20amps) gauge wire directly from the battery. It will be on all the time even with the car off but you can easily make it turn off with the car if that's what you want. To do that you run a relay and have it trigger off of the existing cig plug.
@@Bassmaster784 A 20watt USB phone charger shouldn't draw more than 3 or 4 amps. Some Cigarette lighter plugs only have terminals on two sides and you need to turn the phone charger to line these up. Otherwise it won't work at all.

Were those sockets metric? I didn't think those would work in an american car. Nice job!
+BCtruck, rebuild, repair, repurpose You have a sharp eye... Yes, they were metric but I used metric to SAE converter solder to make them the right size for a domestic vehicle.

Many thanks for this
Great idea. Thanks.
+Bourne Accident Hey Thanks.
Soldering isnt good for long term wires. The wires get fatigued and eventually break
Man I hate lose wires all over the place. OCD.
I have a 15 charger I want to add another but make it look professional
12v and dumbphone, time traveler
Everything can run on 12 volts nowdays, I fucking love it. I bet I could live the same if my house had 12 volt instead of 230. Just replace 230 volt devices with 12 volt devices.
Very true. Most electronics in your home that plug in(televisions, wifi routers, etc) covert it to 12v internally.
U r fantastic😂
