The locomotive has two engines. In the video you only see the base of an engine without all the attachments. The engine is missing the complete exhaust, the turbocharger, the intercooler, as well as all the parts on the intake side. However, the parts of the locomotive are very compatible with the German "V160 locomotive family". The German series 216, 215 and 218 are single-engine locomotives, but the engine compartment is also constructed in the same way as the SP 9010. The displays and switches on the driver's cab are also the same. Should the engines of the SP 9010 stop working, then there would still be alternatives with the engines "MB 16V 652 TB10", "MA 12V 956 TB 11" or the very modern MTU 4000 series. At that time, the well-known problems with the SP series also flowed into the further development of the German V160 locomotive family. The result today is that the German 218 series has continued to improve over the years and is still reliable. One could draw on the experience of Deutsche Lokomotiven to perhaps keep the SP 9010 running. The site for the alternative engines would be available. It is of course a question of money and whether you want to keep the locomotive up to date or whether you want it to remain a historic vehicle.

    Nice sound from that Maybach!
Are there plans to start up the forward Maybach engine on this locomotive, if ever?

Yes, it does sound nice! We are looking forward to taking it out on "the road" and hearing it with some load. :-)
As for the #1 Maybach, see Q&A #11 or so at sp9010.ncry.org/faq.htm. Beyond what's there, parts of the engine were left off and camshafts are rusted after being left exposed to the elements. It would be a Herculean effort to resurrect it and for museum purposes would have no value at all. Indeed, leaving it "as is" arguably preserves some history rather than erasing it whilst still having not only a cosmetically restored artifact but also one which operates, even if only half power.
