Biologist here. In 1926, Ludwig Graper who was studying development biological mechanism of Chick (birds) saw that in the early embryonic development, a structure called 'Primitive streak' would form which would eventually elongate & grow giving rise to various cells of kidney, mesoderm, etc. He wrote that the migration of chick epiblast cells to form primitive streak reminded him of Polonaise. Thus the mechanism of primitive streak formation was called cellular 'dance'. Thanks!

Please, someone find a way to turn off the commentary and leave the music on. And don't limit it to this; I would love to see the Rose Bowl parade without the blather and still hear the bands.
+tonbar tonbarhg Actually, what you are seeing is a polonaise, more of a courtly dance than we are used to. Compare a scene near the end of the movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon where John Wayne's cavalry officers do something similar.

@@embroideredragdoll I have since discovered that it is Ziehrer's "Fächer-Polonaise". Karl Ziehrer (1843-1922) was an Austrian rival of no less than Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) [in his own lifetime known as The Waltz King, he being responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century]. Ziehrer was the last holder of the honorary office of being in charge, musically, of Imperial balls i.e. Hofballmusikdirektor (the first appointee being Johann Strauss II). The writing of his cheerful foot-tapping melodies came to an end only with the end of the Austrian monarchy. He had composed about 600 waltzes, polkas and marches. Thanks to the ravages of the First World War Karl Ziehrer died penniless and forgotten. Here is another version I hope you enjoy: ruclips.net/video/PQ_l5OVdHH4/видео.html
Fächer Polonaise by Carl Michael Ziehrer (early 1900's). Every Vienna Opera Ball opens with a polonaise and this one, written by a Viennese, has been the most popular.
Call it what it is: "rich parents offering their daughters to the sons of other rich parents for breeding purposes so everyone remains rich and no poor outsider can marry in and get a piece of it!"
3Storms if you are rich and let your daughter marry a poor guy you risk the guy is only in it to "get a piece of it". Also I think it's highly demeaning to say that the only way for a poor person to move up the social ladder is to marry someone higher up. And it's also not true. Not in most EU countries, where if you want to educate yourself, you can because taxes fund it. It's not so much about breeding a superior race as it is about the fact that marriage between people from vastly different backgrounds is doomed to fail because they see the world so differently. Also, it's the current year, not 1850. A girl goes out with whoever she wants to go out with. She doesn't need her father to pick her a husband. Thing is, girls most of the time are looking for guys who are richer than them. And google Vienna Opera Ball. Couples applicate to be debutants. In other words, those rich kids are together before they applicate. Single debutants are rarely accepted.
