Building a House for Friends In Thailand

Krahan asked me to film and post a video about his house for him, so here it is. Filmed with iPhone 14 Pro.
About Krahan:
Krahan is Karen. When Krahan was 14-years-old, the Burmese army burned down his village. Krahan became a child solider to fight for his people. He spent the following years facing starvation and hardship in the Burmese jungle. His family got separated escaping the Burmese soldiers.
Eventually Krahan was reunited with his family across the border in Thailand where his people were given refugee status. The Karen people in Krahan's community are Christians.
Krahan is skilled at caring for elephants. Due to his experience as a solder he became good at managing people. These gifts and experience were recognised by the owner of Elephants World and he was offered the job as head-mahout. Krahan lived and worked at Elephants World for 13 years. During that time we became close friends.
Krahan was let go by the owner of Elephants World, along with almost all the Elephants World staff, at the start of the pandemic. Thailand closed its borders so Elephants World had no visitor revenue. Half the elephants were returned to their former owners.
Krahan's income only enabled his family to get by from month to month. Elephants World had been the only home Krahan and his family had known after arriving in Thailand as refugees. Without a job to support his family, Krahan returned to his Karen village on the Thai side of Thai/Burmese border. However, Krahan, his wife Bua and son, Sawang and Che, were homeless. It’s hard to see friends in this situation without wanting to help in some way.

Oh my! What an absolutely wonderful story. It is so good to remember humans don't need all the trappings of modernity to have loving community and individual fulfillment; and that life is more precious with both these things. My heart once again feels at peace and in love.

Mate you are living the dream life... an artist and community man. This was one of the most touching videos i have seen in a while.... There still are good people and good things in the world.... I live in one of the wealthiest countries on the wealthiest continent, but i am a pauper compared to these people, the community and peace is worth more than anything in the world....

Such a beautiful family in need of help & support through this time, they were certainly blessed by kindness & love through friends. The generous donation by this lady was truly magnificent & Khwan's head sculpture too & of course the gorgeous dog, I loved the dog's reaction when seeing the model of himself 😂... Fantastic video. What a talented group of people with different skills and joys. This is what life is all about without a doubt. Playing in the mud to designing a house to cementing floors and walls to painting the interior and exterior to sculpting to delicious homemade meals....ah, the life, indeed!

What a well-told story. I have some questions if you have the patience. (I lived in Thailand for three months in 2014 and my knowledge of the country is rather sophomoric.) In some of your channel videos, even very old ones, I notice Emilie wearing what looks like Karen-style dress (colorful with Pom-poms) …is it because of your association with Karen friends? Or am I mixing it up with Isaan style dress? Is Khwan perhaps from Isaan?
Two other trivial questions. Is Emily wearing a type of sunscreen in this video or is it something else? And finally, I noticed that Sharky has similar features to the dog Bangkor (spelling?) in this video…are there common breeds among the dogs of Thailand and what are they, if so?

A - Yes, it's because almost all our friends in Thailand are Karen. From time to time they give us colourful hand-woven clothes which we love. We especially like the clothes and crafts made by the Karen people in the far north of Thailand. Khwan isn't from Isaan, she's from BKK.
Q - Is Emily wearing a type of sunscreen in this video or is it something else?
A - Emilie is wearing Thanaka cream, something Burmese/Karen people, mainly women and girls, put on their face (sometimes arms). It's mainly applied for cosmetic "beauty" but it's also a sun block and prevents spots and encourages smooth skin. It's made from ground tree bark and roots mixed with water.
Q - I noticed that Sharky has similar features to the dog Bangkor (spelling?) in this video…are there common breeds among the dogs of Thailand and what are they, if so?
A - Sharky is a shelter dog from the countryside. We don't know anything about her breed just she looks like a wolf and has a long fin-like tuft of hair along her spine, hence her name. Thai dogs, especially in the countryside, live outside not the home (our dogs live in the home and Thai people are surprised by this) and are almost all roamers and are just a never-ending genetic mixture so it would be hard to spot any specific breed. We also have several terrier-looking dogs and also 2 long-haired dogs, which is unusual as almost all Thai dogs have short hair.
@@PaulBartonPiano Thanks so much for those answers. It’s nice that you’ve befriended many Karen people. When I taught English in public schools in Western New York, I learned that we have a number of Karen refugees living in Rochester and Buffalo. They are tightly-knit and value education for their children.
I don't speak English very well, I'm French. It would be great if you could activate the subtitles so that I can better understand what you say in the videos :)
