    Been going there for 60 years. That road back in the 60 n 70 you used to be able to drive up there and camp. The usf uses that road still to check the snow pack in the winter. Enjoy

      Big Pine CA about a 4.5 hour drive from LA. There are 4 campgrounds near the trailhead. Nice to go when there’s less people so you can enjoy the quietness of nature.

      I went in August and it got down to the upper 30's at lake 5. Expect it to be cold, especially this early in the season. Good luck!

    Hey how’s it going I just wanted to ask how do u get the permit for it I been trying. To get one but I don’t know how or what website to get it at

    • @TheBackpackingBiologist
      @TheBackpackingBiologist  3 года назад +2

      Hi! Overnight permits arent required from Nov 6-April 30th (it's Nov 6th today). YOu can usually reserve a permit using this site: www.recreation.gov/permits/233262
      There are also get walk-in permits (day of) at the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center, but they are limited so it's best to reserve as early as possible. Let me know if you have any other questions! Good luck :)

  • @Emily-ew4su

    your first video was really great too! i loved the chopstick sticks! is the blue water okay to drink? so there wasn’t an island at lake 5?
    and you totally had to walk, set up camera, then walk away, then walk back right? was that included in the 16 miles?
    i hope the future videos will include cooking scenes and hope the shirtless clips will show more 😏😇
    oh and i’m really glad you included the mishaps like losing the fish and slipping into the water, i liked those bits.

    • @TheBackpackingBiologist
      @TheBackpackingBiologist  2 года назад +1

      haha thanks! I was so embarrassed with this vid I considered removing it, but I'm glad I kept it. So it turns out the island was in lake 4! I probably added another mile of hiking just to get the camera. Hitting the gym so expect more shirtless vids 🤣

    Nice painful 😂hike Sep 6 towards the 1st lake then a breeze towards the 2nd lake. Good advice to listen to your body. Drank water and ate a snack along the way to replenish. Carried less than you did so bravo for going all the way with all that pack. The horses you saw were from Suzanne’s dad www.glacierpacktrain.com/
