  • Our famed technical illustrator Giorgio Piola is celebrating 50 years of attending Formula 1 races - a career that has taken him to more than 800 GPs and started with Monaco in 1969. In this exclusive insight into his time in F1, Piola explains how he earned his first job that year, and his favourite things he has witnessed on the streets of Monte Carlo during his five decades of attending the race

    It didn't go well in 2017, but Kimi's Monaco win in 2005 was one of the most impressive I have ever seen.
    He MISSED the pitlane when the SC car came out, and McLaren panicked, but one of their strategists back at HQ (Neil Martin), told Ron that Kimi could still win if he lapped at the same pace after the SC. He managed to pull out a 20 second gap in like 15 laps or something. Amazing!

    Love Montezemolo dragged from the straight for safety reasons while during the rest of the race people stand next to the track in all sorts of places, and of course the flag dude merrily hops around on the finish line as well ...

    The subtitles/closed captions are laughable in many places. Monaco 69 was shown as monica 16, old Armco shown as old dr myko, Ferrari shown as Rai, etc. I suspect subtitles are automated. However they're done, the company responsible needs to watch the video and correct mistakes.

    It was 1970 when Rindt beat Brabham on the last lap because Jack locked up and hit the bales. With seven laps to go Rindt was 14 seconds behind and gaining 2 seconds a lap IIRC. Seems like only yesterday.

    "The most glamour", that just about sums it up. The race ends with qualifying, but the party marches on. Horrible race.

      Ill never forget that race in 1996(?) Where Panis won. It used to be one of the best races on the calendar in the late 90's.

      Totally agree, years ago it used to be good, the cars have outgrown it now, it's only still their because of the "glamour" it's piss boring now

  • @Euclides287

    If you think Spain was boring, you're in for an even *bigger borefest* in Monaco.
    The track is *dull* and too *narrow* for overtaking. Only the media keeps hyping this race up. Get rid!

    • @Sp4mMe
      @Sp4mMe 5 лет назад +5

      Spain is just boring with no overtaking, in Monaco at least there's always the possibility of a Maldonado happening. Even when he's not in the race.

      I don’t understand this mentality. You don’t need plenty of overtakes to appreciate racing. This race is one of the most difficult for the drivers. You are always on the edge and talent matters more than any other circuit.
