OOOOPS! Forgot to mention that my EVH had a 250K volume pot fitted as standard, so the recording with both pickups you can hear was with the 250k volume pot, I have now just changed it for a 500k volume pot so sounds even better. ENJOY :)
Whats the difference in tone between the two pots? Very cool song btw
@@jaibandroide - The type of pots they use. Volume pots use audio taper pots and tone pots use linear taper pots. The capacitors have alot to do with it too.
@@TomTobin67 yeah, i know that with linear volume its either on or off and the in between its just noise (i need more volume pots haha) but i haven't uses 250k ones, so what about the impedance? I've heard that it sound brighter or something...
I changed my Wolfgang too.... I hate the loose volume.... Stock pickup I changed they were too weak
I just took a duncan distortion humbucker and trimmed the baseplate to fit them in easy
hello Dave, so if ever I will replace my EVH wolfgang special bridge pick up, I will do exactly the same as you did? replacing it with metal machine pickup
Once again that kicks ass, keep on rockin Dave, amazing sound
I've swapped out stock pickups for Irongear Hammer Head and Jailhouse Rail II pickups, believe the hype, they are fantastic. If I said they are great value, it would make them sound like they are great for the price or if you're on a budget, it's not that at all, ignoring the price they are on a par or beat the "big guns" from experience.
I think that both sounds a looks a tonne better now. Loving the IG Dirty Torque in my guitar.
Visually the Steam Hammers are way better looking. Cant really hear much difference in tone myself but I am 60 and Marshally affected...EH ? Wot ?
oh yeah. I've put Dirty Torque in my Les Paul Standard and its a lot more aggressive so cheers for the heads up Dave
Nice to see u back, Dave!!!
Yep i agree with pedraw Dave, sounds good my friend, Cheers
Well the American version is three times more expensive than the Mexico .. but still nice for the price, and I’m not as afraid to mess with it like I would be with the USA version. I don’t like the neck pickup on mine .. so I’m checking out options and landed here. So how do you like the neck pickup on these compared with the stocks?
I'm not liking my EVH at the moment, just cant get it to sound how I expected.
He's back!
Haha nice I put a toggle switch in the same spot for a kill switch. I didn’t need the tone pot anyways. Also, I messed up my EVH Wolfgang bridge pickup to where I can only make it work in parallel 😢so I put it in the neck and the neck pup in the bridge. It’s so damn muddy but works. Anyways, I’ve been wanting to out a Seymour Duncan cream ‘59 bridge and this video helps. Of course I’m going to have to switch out that Alnico 5 magnet for an Alnico 2 or 8. I wonder if I don’t have to do all of this and just talk to Seymour Duncan custom shop and they can make it fit with a custom base plate on my Wolfgang (and switch the magnet since it’s annoying to do).
Isnt there supposed to be foam rubber on the bottom of the EVH pickups? Is it glued on? Or is it just on the bottom of the cavity?
None in mine, on the older models there is foam rubber backing on the pickups.
I dig the double cream on the Iron Gears more than the org zebras, wasn't sure I would but once they were in, hell yeah! I think the rings added a lil something as well. Thanks for posting the effort Dave, always find your stuff inspiring. Peace!
I put a Steam Hammer in the neck of my tele. Nice pickup, only disappointment is that the pole pieces aren't adjustable easily. I think they're just pressed in to the wax, in in an un threaded hole. You can probably adjust them if you take the pup out and push them from the back. Suffice to say I didn't bother doing this....
yes they do adjust
I think the EVH's were slightly brighter but the other new one's were warmer and looked better.
Whats with the remark on the white board? Nice guitar .
Just a little issue with Thomann, perhaps a story for another video.
Piqued my interest, I can tell you!
@@DaveBarlowGuitar intrigued.🤔
@@Axess-sv8nq And mine!!
@@DaveBarlowGuitar Deffo want to hear that story mate. Got a story of my own regarding Thomann!!
Hey Dave, got a couple of questions for ya. How do you reckon they fair against a DiMarzio Super distortion? Look similar, specs seem to be similar too and a 1/3 of the price. You also mentioned changing your volume pot. Anything special about the pot?
BTW PMSL laughing at the comment on the whiteboard. What happened?
OK, nothing special about the pot, the pickups are a little hotter than supers but similar ballpark :)
Whiteboard - Just a little issue with Thomann, perhaps a story for another video.
Dave Barlow Good to know. I'm looking for a guitar ATM to put a couple of supers I have
they sound the same except you made the steam hammers louder in the mix to give the impression they're better?
Have you tried the Iron Gear Metal?? Those pickups are great!!
No, might be a bit too far for me.
Hello Dave great gig yesterday I put a video up. Cheers and be lucky.
Hi David, great to meet you dude :)
Just wanted to say thank you for your videos . If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have discovered iron gear pickups. They are AMAZING! Got some Rolling Mills and they kick ass! Also why the hate for Thomann?
talk about Thomann another time
Eddie had the same issue, jamming the high E into his neck pickup, so he upgraded to the USA Wolfgang
The Steam Hammer pickups sound slightly lower output but otherwise pretty much the same tone. Problem solved.........
i think the easiest way is to just transfer or swap the back plate of the evh pickup on the iron gear, to make it more easier to change pickups.
Wooah de ja vu. I had to do the same thing about a year ago when I got some old PAF's (probate *sigh).
I'm pleased to say that I did it the same way as you did.. phew. :)
Irongear needs to get these on amazon. Their website is horrible to navigate and US currency seems to be a problem. I just want to buy pickups, I don’t need a headache doing it.
I agree on both counts :) Although I dont really like Amazon (Jeff Bezos) that much.
Or ebay at least, and get normal shipping rates. They are great pickups but their insisting on using DHL only to ship it to Serbia (and most countries) ended up in me paying 50$ for a pair of pups, 30$ for DHL shipping and 40$ for import taxes hahaha. Btw all other UK sellers send me stuff for 5 quid royal mail that even avoids the customs.
I think the Steam Hammer sound great although I do prefer the original pickups, those sound a bit fuller to my ear. But still, for the price the Iron Gears go for that's amazingly well sounding pickups. Certainly pickups to consider. Finding p'ups that sound exactly like the EVH pickups probably is not an easy task, especially not on a budget. I think the SH will be up to what you need from them.
And now for something completely different: What did Thomann do to you?
Well I thought this too but the SH are cleaner, in my live rig I can add more bottom end and get the same sound with the same clarity, I think what you are hearing is a slightly lower output sound. Will report back after a few gigs.
@@DaveBarlowGuitar Please do! Yeah, I've wondered if it's maybe because of the lower output, especially as you said that you wanted the pickups to be farther away from the strings. Can't wait to hear what your gigging experience is like.
Bought a Special, I like the neck pickup but the bridge pickup is very weak no matter the setup.
How do you do the kill switch? Not electrically orientated
What happened to the originals? Want to sell them?
no keeping them in case
also i have question how do you rate playability? im about to buy evh standard for 350 dolars from 2018
std is different from the special, I believe they have a cutaway for your forearm for lower singers, the special has not got this, wish I purchased the std.
Whether anyone likes the new pickups in the guitar or not, I came away from this video thinking I should use the Steam Hammers in my LP style guitar that needs new pickups.
I have some in my les Paul at the moment
Kickasss dave
Love them Iron Gear pickups!😀
I'm doing the same thing tomorrow
Cool video. the EVH sounds better.
Sorry Dave all I could see was "Thomann R Cunts" Ahahah
New pickups sound amazing, I prefer them but that Is not to say the EVH ones were bad
Sounds good, those riffs remind me of Green Tambourine
Yeah does a bit :)
We're playing a drinking game. Every time Dave says the word "hole", we take a drink.
Hole! Hic!
I dont know anyone who likes the neck pick ups on any EVH. I put a Duncan 59 in mine. lol
Can I have your EVH pickups please?
No sorry dude they are good pups, keeping them for another project :) Sorry
Jeezo Dave a bit of gaffer tape would have stopped the string sticking. Good enough for Dime
yes I used that idea already but my OCD kicked in LOL
@@DaveBarlowGuitar hahaha fair enough
Steam Hammers had a lot more definition along the whole spectrum to my ears.
I bought an Ibanez a while back, didn't know the bridge pickup had been swapped out, but but as soon as I played it I knew the difference. Exactly as you said, MUCH more definition, but with a lovely bite. I only found out it was a Steam Hammer when I took it apart for a fret polish and general service. I had actually assumed it was a much more expensive pickup, so anyone thinking "too cheap, so can't be any good" should think again.
E.G. Systems Yes the Iron Gear range are fantastic, they also compare very well with the Bare Knuckle brand which are twice the price.
Pretty shitty thing of Fender to do by making their pickup cavities proprietary and non-conforming to other pickups. Nice job on the mod, thanks for the video.🙏
🤦♂ why did you do that?
Why didn't you just get some open top covers, takes care of the string snag ;-)
they wont fit the rout, anyway rerouted now and happy, got some Dirty Torque in there and very pleased with the sound.
lol im about to buy this guitar, seek for someone on youtube and bum its you again! you are small youtuber but on every topic i seek i find you lol
because I dont do videos spouting shit that you have to buy :), thanks for following my channel :)
EVH pickups sound like EVH, the new ones sound like...nothing special
fair enough
Steam hammers sound weaker but clearer
The reason the pickups are too high is because they have been installed by someone thats clueless.
LOL

I agree with your sentiments regarding Thomann. Shame they have an army of shill youtubers. Keep it real!
