    Just love how you suggest to people that expensive pickups are not the only good pickups out there and there other cost effective brands that are just as good. I just recently tried a set of oripure pickups in an ibanez i have and there fantastic.

    I had been looking for metal pickups for a project guitar I am working on (I got a Jackson JS22 Dinky so that I could learn about guitar building) and all of the major brands like EMG, Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio, etc., are so expensive that a set is worth almost more than the guitar itself. I found this video and checked out the Metal Machines on axetec, and even after exchange rate and international shipping (I'm in Canada), a set of these still comes up to wayyyy cheaper than the ones I was originally looking at. So excited for them to arrive and learn to install them on my guitar. Thank you for the awesome video and demo!!

    Really need a good book on wiring and soldering pick ups, I've bought a load of pickups with hopes of learning how to, the metal pick up the white and green wires says they should be joined, are they fitted to anything or just free floating???? They already come joined, im fitting an obsidian 7way switch to one of my HSS strats and putting In a metal machine Hb in the bridge, a smokestack II to the middle and a Texas loco to the neck aaaaaannnd I'm out of my depth,. I also have a two sets of H slags Nickel and gold, hammer heads, sorting out four of my guitars and end of the month some blues engines for my rip off Les Paul, and feeling a tad overwhelmed pmsl, just bought a soldering iron to do three of my guits now what's the best way to get my head around electrics, I want to be self sufficient with my repairs and builds

    Greetings my friend and sorry for being late to the Iron Gear party!!!! As a new metal guitar player with limited budget i got my hands on a new Harley Benton EX shaped guitar and i everything about it except for the damn active pickups. My first crappy guitar before this one that i bought used for 20 bucks just to see if i would want to put the effort to learn guitar was an Epiphone special 2 with this epiphone 650R and 700T humbuckers and man what a sweet melodic sound and also good distorted. from youtubers i like the tone of Ola Englund that has his signiture Seymour Duncan solar pickups that none really knows what are they but his philosophy is passive neutral good pickups because the tone should be shaped in the amp and the pedals not the pickups. so having all these in mind and by watching your videos what should i do ? I was thinking for more diversity to boy a hummer head for the bridge and a metal machine for the neck (unless you suggest the opposite is better ) since my favorite music is Candlemas with doom metal since it is heave but slower and easier to play and learn but also death metal but also Metallica and 80s staff. 1st of all are the metal mashine and the hummer head passive pickups or i am in for a surprise ? 2 . Do you think these are not what i am looking for and i should be looking to Hot slugs or something else ? I thank you for the videos !

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar

    Hi Dave.
    Firstly, I would like to say you a huge thanks for your videos. Thanks to you I've been able to get an idea about a lot of different pickups and I'm getting a lot of knowledge about different aspects of the guitar.
    I've got 2 questions for you: I recently bought from Japan a Burny Super Grade rlg50, a very nice and mint guitar from 1983. I would like to change pickups and wirings as well, but I've never done something like this before.
    Is this is an approachable DIY job if I buy all the necessary equipment?
    Second question: I'm looking for a configuration that could give me the sound from JB blues to Metallica, I like Audioslave/Soundgarden and that kind of rock/not too much gain music.
    What do you think about a set with Neck tesla shark and Overwound Rolling Mill at the bridge?
    Cheers mate and stay safe,
    Matteo

    • @DaveBarlowGuitar
      @DaveBarlowGuitar  4 года назад +1

      I would suggest Tesla Sharks neck and bridge to get those sounds as rolling off the gain gets you a vintage sound which works great with an LP guitar, adding gain in your amp will get you to EVH, Metallica etc, buy a pre wired harness on ebay if you are not sure about wiring then all you would need to do is hook up the pickups :(

    • @strapanasi

      Dave, what can I say, thank you very much for all this information! Pure gold!
      I really appreciate it. You'll have a free pint of beer if you'll come here in London!
      Cheers.
      The Tesla set is a very interesting option, I'm still unsure if I should pick them zebra or nickel covered, I'll figure it out. I don't want to ruin the vintage look of my cherry sunburst LP :)
      Yes, you're right and my amp has a lot of gain as well (it's a Blackstar HT20 MkII), so with the Tesla it will be fine.
      I'll see what to do with the pre wired set, the Burny uses 500k pots but I think the only flaw on Japanese les pauls is the electronics, I'll figure it out.
      Thanks again,
      Matteo

    What a grear video.. used iron gear before and their pickups always impress. Im currently building a tom delonge strat. Do you think this pickup would be ok. Was looking at a seymour duncan invader which are about 16k..the iron gear here is bit hotter. Would it to much do you think? Or would you go with the invader or maybe something else like a warman? I tried them, they are a little bassy for me, but not bad. Output level is high as promised, sings nicely on the higher strings. However, I put back my stock epiphone les paul pickups. Overall, they are more balanced and defined, and I really missed that vintage tone, wich the metal machine doesnt have... It sounded so generic somehow, uninteresting...
    So, still looking for an upgrade for my les paul.. I like the stock pickups, my main problem is the low output, since I play metal. I think cheramic pickups are not a way for me, since I like how the alnico vintage pickups color the sound. Dave, could you recommend me a pickup please? :D

  • @ScottANovak
    @ScottANovak 5 лет назад +1

    Whenever you are using a set screw type knob on a split control shaft , such as the one in this video, find something solid to fit into the split in the shaft. If you don't have the split filled with something solid, the set screw will cause the shaft to bend inward, which weakens the shaft, which can eventually break, or even more likely, cause the knob to come loose. The engineering rule is that if you are using a round shaft, the knob needs two screws or it will eventually come loose. If you are using a half round shaft then one set screw in the knob will keep it tight. With that set screw knob on a split splined shaft, one set screw should work okay, provided that you fill the slot in the shaft.
