It is said that Eric Clapton was so perturbed that Jimmy had use these chords and that chord sequence that he wrote produced recorded “let it grow” to spite stairway.
Interesting stuff. Thank you. I could have done without the backing “music”, though. It was distracting and definitely not representative of the music being discussed.
Thanks for the post! I want SOMETHING behind the narration and, unlike the shorts, I can’t use copyrighted music, so that’s why you hear the generic stuff. I can take a poll of the subscribers and see what most think.
Fascinating!!! I've often wondered how well they liked the song. I bought the sheet music, and trust me, it doesn't sound very good on just a piano. At least in my experience.
I'm first at my first premier?? Insomnia sometimes pays off! 😄 Back in the days when FM radio was fresh! Oh yeah, I bought that album immediately after hearing Stairway to Heaven. My dad liked it. My grandmother loved it. It's a classic! It was our class song at our prom. But I can understand how Robert felt. I love that song....but it's at the top of my list of Great But Overplayed Songs I Really Don't Need To Hear Ever Again. 😄😄 But I did learn a few new things. Thank you! ♥️ (Edited for autoincorrect)
I found Zeppelin's next album after *IV, Houses of the Holy* to be their masterpiece. Definitely a vinyl record flipper (listen to one side - you want to hear other side immediately) They could've released an album like *Presence* that would of killed the momentum they had with *IV.* Maybe Atlantic would of tighten that leach on the band. Plus no *Physical Graffiti* double album if *Houses of the Holy* flopped.
I loved Randy California and Spirit but the courts got it right. There’s only so many notes. There’s also a guitar part that sounds similar to The Beatles You Never Give Me Your Money and Creams Badge but it’s their song alone. Great video
Good show! When that record was released, I'm sure you remember, the radio stations and every kid on the block played the cowboy sh😃t out of Stairway. Within two years, everybody was tired of it. It was like being trapped inside an ice cream parlor overnight. By morning, you're sick to death of Rocky Road. I remember when I saw Led Zeppelin in 1973 in Dallas, when they (Page) started plucking those opening notes, all the guys standing around me started laughing dersively, exchanging mocking glances over it; however, the girls all scolded us, "Shut up! SHHHHH!!!!" and turned to watch Robert sing directly to each...one...of...them, lol. Still, we loved it deep down. In my high school I got a reputation for being able to play it on acoustic guitar. THAT'S how fewer guitarists there were per square foot then, I'm sure you recall, GT!
For two or three graduate high school classes voted Led Zeppelin as the best song. My class (1976) at the high school I went to broke that streak. Our class voted for *David Bowie's "Golden Years".*
I’m still thinking about the backlash to the song being overplayed. A band mate had a sign in his music store in the acoustic guitar section that read “No Stairway To Heaven!”. I was present several times when he took a guitar away from a potential customer as soon as the opening to the song was heard. He would give the guitar back after explaining that the sign was serious.
The story about a donation to a radio station in Portland is great. I heard that story from a public radio station several years ago during that station’s fundraising period. The story said that the Portland station was advertising itself as the “No More Stairway To Heaven” radio station during their own pledge drive. Plant, who happened to be driving down the Oregon coast, heard this and stopped along the way to call in a pledge. I was always uncertain as to the validity of the story so it’s great to have it verified!👍🏼
Dolly Parton in an interview about an album she did of various songs besides country, called Plant to get his blessing to recorec the song. It took months for them to connect as he seemed to not care to get in touch with her. When they finally talked she explained that she wanted tp do a Gospel take on Stairway, he responded; "Well at that time we were listening to a lot of Joni Michell, so I think that would be fine." Dolly version is very different but still a fine recording.
9:30 the studio version used a recorder trio or quartet, (a woodwind instrument), if you listen very hard, at the beginning you can hear jones drawing breath, and the tune will come to you at last.
In polls, "Stairway" usually came in at #1 or #2, alternating with "Layla," on the rock stations in the eighties. This was before WNEW FM in New York was destroyed.
@@Mick_Ts_Chick I listened to WNEW FM in New York from the early seventies until the late nineties. The people were extremely knowledgeable and played the "hit" songs and everything else on the album that was worth listening to. They had a kind of a rock historian on Sundays, I believe, and he was great. They had women DJs also. I guess for financial reasons and changes in music itself, the station stopped playing rock. I honestly don't know what they're doing now. The end was near when they got two a-hole shock jocks, Opie and Anthony, in the afternoons. One thing I remember was they encouraged "girls" to flash men with their breasts on the Long Island Expressway on Wednesdays. Anyway, while they were still broadcasting, the DJs said they didn't have too many records to play because as soon as it became definite that the station was closing, people (I'm presuming the DJs) began taking things out of the library. The last month or so was pathetic. I was very sad. I wish the DJs had had the foresight to do something with the library, which was vast. Internet still wasn't very developed. I believe the station began in the late 60s--they had everything. Best wishes.
@@glittermama Wow that is sad. I hate when the really good stations go down the drain. We had an 80s station here in NC in the early 2000s that was fantastic. Naturally since I loved it, they decided to change it and play whatever crap was popular then, and ruined it. 🤬
@@Mick_Ts_Chick I know I know!!! (As soon as you find the right color lipstick, for example, they discontinue it!!!). When I was in HS in the 60s and I was loving Rock and Roll, I used to listen to "Murray the K" on WINS. He was terrific--he had rock and roll shows in downtown Brooklyn at the Paramount Theater and Rock and Roll was US. One morning as I was getting ready for school, I turned the radio on and there was a NEWS STATION instead of the regular rock program. Murray the K disappeared also and never was on the radio again. The last I heard, there is still news on that station. The only thing that kept me sane was Cousin Brucie who played Oldies. 💔
@@the_guitar_trooper Listen carefully to the studio version and you'll hear them breath. They're kinda Renaissance consort (three or four simple voices around the chord notes) and a little too hi-fi when compared to a Mellotron.
I'm working on an essay on LZ at the moment and one of the bits that I cut out of it was a diversion on the "glorious stupidity" of Led Zeppelin and this song is the prime example - it's over the top maximalism, gobbledegook lyrics, it's function as a show case for Plant and Page posturing on stage, the way so much of it is flat out nicked (not just Taurus, the section before the solo sounds a lot like.... I'll get back to you) but LZ didn't care and the way - but they get away with it because that (which would make us laugh at any other band) is the magic of Led Zeppelin. LZ IV sold all those records and never made #1 - Santana, Sly and The Family stone and Carole King kept it off the top spot.

I love Led Zep and the song but it's not in my top 10 by them. I prefer the "rockier" type songs, but it is nice if you want to wind down.
Well said!

Try it on an accordion. Ummmmm

Yeah, it got pretty heavy for a while. I think that it’s mostly because the store personnel were sick of hearing it!!

Yep. In 1972, the FM album stations were playing them both endlessly!
Just curious but how was it destroyed? Did you mean the actual building or by something else going on?
