  • A short little video of an unforgettable flight in a beautifully restored RAF Chipmunk, one of very few examples still flying today in it's original colours.
A MASSIVE thank you to my excellent pilot & the lucky owner of this bird for giving me this tremendous opportunity.
Please note there's no fancy camera work here at all, you'll have to make do with my shakey hand using my smart phone.
    Thanks for viewing folks!

Great stuff takes me back to my ATC days in the 70's. Going through parachute training, where to walk on the aircraft, comms procedures, waddling out over grass strapped into a chute with the smell of hot engine and the back draft of the prop. For a teenage Biggles and WW2 fighter ace avid book reader this was already living the dream! Being taught the basics of flight hands on in air by an RAF pilot was all an unforgetable experience. On one of my flights the pilot, once he knew I had the basics, said "I need to stretch my arms, you have control". Having said the required response "I have control Sir" I took the stick and pedals whilst he proceeded to pull back the canopy and and wiggle his fingers in the slipstream. Never ever outdone was the experience of flying upside down and the deathly hush of a stall turn over Wiltshire on a glorious summers afternoon at 5,000? feet. Also during the same flight the pilot asked me how many aircraft I could see in the sky. After an intense search with my then keen15 year old eyes I proudly reported one-to our left at approximate same altitude. To which he replied I see 7 (including 2 helicopters which he pointed out and unbelievably one of the early Concordes contrailing way above us). Which was one of the reasons some years later when the RAF politely declined my application to fly one of those rather fast and expensive jet aeroplanes by myself.

Wow. Exactly this, except we flew them at Filton where Concorde was built. Once saw it taking off as we flew over the airfield,

I slipped the Earth's surly bonds for the first time in a Chipmunk, 47 years ago. Those 47 years just evaporated.
    What a beautifully pure aircraft!
    Thank you for sharing.

Flew in these quite a few times in the A.T.C at Finningley and Turnhouse. Took control and the pilot did some aerobatics, barrel roll, loop and a stall turn which was my favourite. Watching this video brought so many memories back. Great times.
The sound of the horizontally opposed gipsy major, never forget that sound 👍🏼

Noice!!! Nothing like the real thing..The touch, the smell..that mix of old leather, AV fuel smokes, metal...the wear and tear, scuffs, squeaks...the G-Forces....VR's got a long way to go LOL! but still the best option for those who want to get a glimpse at what flying is all about...

It might just be camera zoom, but the landing looked well slow - chipmunk must have a pretty decent low stall speed ! Not sure they still use it, i'm thinking probably not, but it's good to see people still fly it. I was in ATC myself but never got the chance to be in one.

Great video! My father owned Chipmunk G-APPM 1966/67 and flew it all over the place. Wonderful aircraft, although he laughed and said it was rather noisy. He learnt aerobatics in it, over Biggin Hill.

Great to see this again! And what a blast from the past too. We were told not to to aerobatics below 5000 ft. to ensure that safety margin in case of hairy dives whilst fine tuning new manoeuvres. To get max. air time and get the aircraft down for the next guy without a tedious descent, we would spin down and (in recovery, as per the manual) "pull out of the ensuing dive" at some distance from the top of the downwind leg, calling downwind as the aircraft slowed from that dive spread to circuit speed of 90 knots. Gee Whizz: seeing it again - my stuff was 1959 - 1961 in the University Air Squadron - was really something. Those were the days: spot landing practise, formation flying, and once when preparing to enter the circuit in formation, getting mightily thrown about in the wake of a Gloster Javelin at Thorney Island. All 60 years ago in what feels today like another country. Still, lovely video: thanks and "keep'em comin' matey!"
