Real flight in a vintage RAF Chipmunk

- A short little video of an unforgettable flight in a beautifully restored RAF Chipmunk, one of very few examples still flying today in it's original colours.
A MASSIVE thank you to my excellent pilot & the lucky owner of this bird for giving me this tremendous opportunity.
Please note there's no fancy camera work here at all, you'll have to make do with my shakey hand using my smart phone.
Thanks for viewing folks! - Игры
Great stuff takes me back to my ATC days in the 70's. Going through parachute training, where to walk on the aircraft, comms procedures, waddling out over grass strapped into a chute with the smell of hot engine and the back draft of the prop. For a teenage Biggles and WW2 fighter ace avid book reader this was already living the dream! Being taught the basics of flight hands on in air by an RAF pilot was all an unforgetable experience. On one of my flights the pilot, once he knew I had the basics, said "I need to stretch my arms, you have control". Having said the required response "I have control Sir" I took the stick and pedals whilst he proceeded to pull back the canopy and and wiggle his fingers in the slipstream. Never ever outdone was the experience of flying upside down and the deathly hush of a stall turn over Wiltshire on a glorious summers afternoon at 5,000? feet. Also during the same flight the pilot asked me how many aircraft I could see in the sky. After an intense search with my then keen15 year old eyes I proudly reported one-to our left at approximate same altitude. To which he replied I see 7 (including 2 helicopters which he pointed out and unbelievably one of the early Concordes contrailing way above us). Which was one of the reasons some years later when the RAF politely declined my application to fly one of those rather fast and expensive jet aeroplanes by myself.
Wow. Exactly this, except we flew them at Filton where Concorde was built. Once saw it taking off as we flew over the airfield,
This take me back 50 years. Love the Chippie.
Beautiful plane , used to work on a RCAF chippy in the 80s
Jump jump jump John!
I remember that video.

I slipped the Earth's surly bonds for the first time in a Chipmunk, 47 years ago. Those 47 years just evaporated.
What a beautifully pure aircraft!
Thank you for sharing.
takes me back to the good old days of 5 AEF at Marshalls, FoD signs, soft soled shoes or boots, cadets walking like apes, the old kitmaster who took one look at you and got your helmet size spot on.
Fantastic
Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful.
I flew this plane when I was in cadets back in 93. I think it was from Nescliffe , amazing memories. Thank you
Flew the Chipmunk many times, and got ATC Wing Blue, where I soloed at 17 in one.
Flew in these quite a few times in the A.T.C at Finningley and Turnhouse. Took control and the pilot did some aerobatics, barrel roll, loop and a stall turn which was my favourite. Watching this video brought so many memories back. Great times.
The sound of the horizontally opposed gipsy major, never forget that sound 👍🏼
Lucky old you, that takes me back to my real flying days - awesome!!!
Thanks David! :)
Noice!!! Nothing like the real thing..The touch, the smell..that mix of old leather, AV fuel smokes, metal...the wear and tear, scuffs, squeaks...the G-Forces....VR's got a long way to go LOL! but still the best option for those who want to get a glimpse at what flying is all about...
Hey Sky Starr you are absolutely spot on, I love the smell and feel of these old aircraft!
Learned to fly one of these most forgiving airframes in the 80’s
It might just be camera zoom, but the landing looked well slow - chipmunk must have a pretty decent low stall speed ! Not sure they still use it, i'm thinking probably not, but it's good to see people still fly it. I was in ATC myself but never got the chance to be in one.
Jump John, Jump!!
Sweet! I'll have to watch after I get back home but wanted to get my thumbs up in!! This will be a great video!
Thanks Don that's really kind of you! It's nothing special, just a few snaps and videos from a smart phone :)
Ah, a reminder of my Air Cadet days! Will have to book a flight next year. Thanks for the upload.
Great video! My father owned Chipmunk G-APPM 1966/67 and flew it all over the place. Wonderful aircraft, although he laughed and said it was rather noisy. He learnt aerobatics in it, over Biggin Hill.
Thanks for sharing!
Awsome! Nice views of Binbrook!
Thanks a lot!
Great to see this again! And what a blast from the past too. We were told not to to aerobatics below 5000 ft. to ensure that safety margin in case of hairy dives whilst fine tuning new manoeuvres. To get max. air time and get the aircraft down for the next guy without a tedious descent, we would spin down and (in recovery, as per the manual) "pull out of the ensuing dive" at some distance from the top of the downwind leg, calling downwind as the aircraft slowed from that dive spread to circuit speed of 90 knots. Gee Whizz: seeing it again - my stuff was 1959 - 1961 in the University Air Squadron - was really something. Those were the days: spot landing practise, formation flying, and once when preparing to enter the circuit in formation, getting mightily thrown about in the wake of a Gloster Javelin at Thorney Island. All 60 years ago in what feels today like another country. Still, lovely video: thanks and "keep'em comin' matey!"
Wow that's really fascinating John thanks for sharing your real world experiences and glad this little video brought back some incredible memories! Take care
VR Flight Sim Guy There must be lots of ex-UAS guys out there with lots more to say. I hope some of them come through!
Flew in a couple at Kinloss many years ago, great.
Takes me back early 90s cdt 1st class Ross . J AT.C 127 City of Wakefield Sqn.
A good friend of mine as just bought 2 of these,Hoping to go when he collects them.
Loving the transition at 3:40. Great video as always!
I flew in a couple when i was in the atc, then later met and worked with a testpilot who tested them when he was in the RAF.
Great video. ❤ fun flying with birds like this. This is also at EGNW Wickenby Aerodrome Lincoln UK where you recorded you MSFS2020 with this same plane that you will release tomorrow Sunday 26th of June?
Yep you guessed it mate 😊
@@VRFlightSimGuy if I look at your photos from your video you have an addon for this Airport because my default one did look without your details
Jump Jump John!
who? what?!

Had to watch that many times in my cadet days.
I think anyone who was atc will have been in one of those.
5AEF at marshalls, happy days.
Great ortho!
Zoom Level 9 million 😉
Great videso, brings back memories. The music ruined in unfortunately; the sound of the beautiful engine is enough and would demonstrate the experience much better
This was recorded off a mobile phone, so you can imagine how awful it sounded..cheers.

Great wee video, reminded me of flying a chip from Maston in Kent, it was spoil slightly by the music, why do people put backing tracks when the sound of the engine and the passing wind is enough?
Thankyou. The video was recorded with a phone, trust me, you don't want to hear that.
Nice film but why have music!!!?? It ruins the whole thing!!
It was filmed with a crappy phone, there is no audio to enjoy
❤
Why the music? I like Pink Floyd, but I wanted to enjoy the sound of the chipmunk. Great filming, well done.
The videos were shot from a phone with terrible audio, trust me, Pink Floyd was the better option 😉
Seems to be a good reason to take another flight with a small camcorder, a good excuse to go again.
I flew in WP800 when in the ATC in 1964!
Good film, pity it was not without the music
Cloud effects look good but you need to turn up the autogen traffic. Then it *might look real. ;)
This is running on a future 120000080ti ;)
Shame it didn't include any aerobatics!
YAY, the one millionth great video made unwatchable by shitty loud music.....congratulations!
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Ruined by the music
In this case trust me, it isn't. There isn't any nice audio of the engine as I filmed this with a cheap phone at the time.
