- Hollywood promises fame and fortune to anyone lucky enough to hit it big. But for many child stars, the pressures of celebrity and the excesses of Tinseltown come too soon, too fast, and at too high a price. If the tragic stories of former child stars like Gary Coleman, Lindsay Lohan, and David Cassidy have taught us anything it's that the spotlight can blind even the biggest talents to the dangers of greed and excess.
Still, for every child star who makes it out, there are more like Dustin Diamond, Corey Haim, and Amanda Bynes who are never the same. Here's a tragic look at some child stars who lost it all and never managed to recover.

Let's be honest...most of these kids were exploited by their parents and closest confidante. So very sad
Hollywood in general is a place based on fakery, manipulation, lies and abuse, and while they may have managed to cover it up to some degree in the past, increasingly we are seeing people coming forward with disturbing exposes on what goes on there
Their *job* is fabrication, it's literally why it exists. They manufacture fantasy and a person's ability to stay employed is directly dependent on their ability to pretend to be someone else, aka act, and as we've been seeing more and more, their willingness to submit to the inappropriate, perverted, degraded and wholly criminal yet overlooked demands of individuals with the power to get them where they think they want to be. It's a dark place and seeing what comes out of there recently seems to be almost openly admitting to its iniquity and saying 'we don't need to hide anymore'
For every 'successful moviestar', there's 99 failed ones, still clinging on to that unrealistic dream of stardom because they're living in fantasyland in their head and unwilling to accept reality. If this business chews up and spits out grown adults onto the streets homeless without the slightest care or hint of remorse, imagine what it does to children
Child actors should not be a thing and no parent should be allowed to essentially pimp their child out, especially when there is no vetting of any kind as to whether they have the capacity, or intention, of handling their child's career and earnings properly. Too many kids have had their parents steal the money they made and mismanage their careers leaving them broke and way beyond the point of no return for a career. It's a travesty, disgusting, and everyone knows that, yet it's still allowed to just keep on happening for some reason. People with moral and ethical integrity need to speak out more against this morally bankrupt and corrupt industry.
@@J3diMindTrix damn that's a long diatribe!
@@J3diMindTrix Well stated and true. Bravo! The bottom line is regardless of the industry when a child/family member becomes the source of financial support for others greed takes over.
The "star" is literally prostituted. Talented people become slaves. When they become overworked and overwhelmed the leeches (family included) prop them up with drugs. It is a pattern we see over and over.
When parents step in to manage a career they are motivated by greed. They don't have the mental acuity to handle the intricacies of money management. They get bamboozled by accountants, money managers, agents, and a variety of industry insiders who lead them to believe they're in charge. In truth, they are not.
Parents, along with their golden goose, are being played for patsies. They only wake up when the IRS notifies them of back-owed taxes. When that happens all "handlers" have disappeared.
When the next dreamer appears the "machine" goes to work and in the end, we see broken, disheartened, drug-addicted people who have been used, abused, and toss like everyday garbage.
From Judy Garland to Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston to Brittany Spears and other current-day notables the same fate awaits. They are utterly and completely destroyed. Prince and MJ spoke publicly of their predicaments and both succumbed to their manufactured addictions.

It was the parents or drugs.
Their parents have a role in this too. Alot of these kids have drugs forced on them, and suffer sexual assault. They need to have some protection from greedy parents and agents. Look at Judy Garland, for example.
And her daughter
Didn’t Corey Haim talk about the sexual assaults perpetrated on him and other boys?

True Story: Had a layover in Peoria, Il in the late 90's. My friend and I by happenstance met Dustin Diamond outside a stripclub (Big Al's). We had a conversation with him for 5 min. We triggered him by asking y he was waiting in line like everyone else and he explained (very nicely btw) that he was exploited and signed a bad kid contract that paid him pennies on the dollar for royalties. He was bitter and pissed off...but very nice to us.....RIP Mr Diamond!!!
I liked Diamond. RIP
Yeah he got screwed. He was such a nice human being with a truly good soul. Then his life got cut short. RIP bro.
He could not sign. His parents would have
I'm from Peoria.. this was weird to read
How much substance use was due to sexual abuse in the industry? You skipped right over that for Corey Haim.
Corey Feldman too. Feldman as of now advocates against abuse of child actors due to him being exploited earlier on in his life.
As a kid I envied the kids who were famous in TV shows and movies, as they seemed to be on top of the world and living the dream. But I am so glad now that I'm a relative nobody, knowing now how many of these poor souls were cruelly exploited and then chewed up and spat out by the creeps and moguls of the entertainment industry. Some have managed to crawl out of this wicked world after so much hardship and get back on their feet, and to me will always be an inspiration in survival. Should ever we feel sorry for ourselves at the cards life has dealt us, we only need to look at these people and those who have had pretty rough ride in life, to put our trials into a more balanced perspective.
Most of my favorite child stars turned out fine. Kenan & Kel, Tia & Tamera (and Tahj Mowry) and others.
yes, and fame brings loss

Oh my yeah, totally true! I have to admit my life is perfect compared to any of these child-stars.
Very interesting post. I agree with most of what you typed.
Same. Now that I’m much older I realize there is an advantage in being relatively anonymous and unknown.
Child exploitation and mismanagement should become against the law.
They get used and abused, then they toss them away, then they get messed up or even die!!🙁

Corey Haim... Heartbreaking.
It is. One minuet he was world famous and everyone was knocking on his door and then they didn't even pretend to know him. Very sad. I enjoyed his movie License to Drive.. think that was the name of the flick...very funny movie.
i know. that will never sit well with me. i was really into his movies too at the time of his death.
Gary Colemans story breaks my heart... 😩
Have you ever heard him speak? He's had the IQ of a raisin.
I feel bad that Gary Coleman's parents robbed him but he took his anger out on people who cared about him. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Me too. His parents worked him to the bone so they could live well. Common theme in Hollywood and dates back to Jackie Coogan in the 1920's. I was so upset when people were annoying him at work because he had a job like the rest of us. For whatever reasons, people felt like they could ridicule him for that...for working a job! On a happier note, he was truly gifted in comedy and I enjoyed his work.
Well, that was depressing.
Can we give Todd Bridges kudos! Twenty years sober, a great dad and the only surviving cast member of Different Strokes which was a great childhood memory for me. So glad he’s ok
He seems very together and has been for a while. Over the years I would watch him on different shows and he seems very comfortable in his life now.
We also need a list of child actors who succeeded after the early fame. Ron Howard, Kurt Russell, Beau and Jeff Bridges, Donny Wahlberg, etc.
Drew Barrymore
Jodie Foster
Mayim Bialik (Blossom), Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael J. Fox.
Keenan Thompson (SNL), Britney Spears, Christina Aguilara, Justin Timberlake, Mario Lopez. Depends on definition of success I guess, but ya.
Leo, Jared Leto!

I will never understand how millionaires go broke. Just place the money in the bank and live off the interest. If the principal money is never touched, you cannot go broke. Live a normal life and everything will be great.
This happens alot in pro sports, sad to say.
They get too much, too quickly and too young. They've never learned to handle money, also wealth and life style are addictive (the same goes to most lottery winners).
I find that people who mismanage their finances do so on the scale of their earnings, no matter how great.

Having grown up watching these former child stars at the height of their fame back then, we can only feel sorry at the way they made their downward spiral due to mismanagement, drugs, alcohol and other vices. Blame it also when they had to work at a very young age, with no time to experience what a normal childhood was. Let us also remember that fame is not forever, and cannot buy happiness 😧
Some child stars do well into adulthood if they can stay out of trouble and away from drugs. And if they keep landing roles and have trustworthy families.
What contributed to any of these kids downfall was not only the parents but the Hollywood system and they shit they had to do to stay relevant…
Also their inability to make sound financial decisions. Can't blame it all on the parents or Hollywood.

So many of these stars were screwed over by the people who were supposed to take care of them. Their parents spend all their money and leave them with the bills and the stress and bankruptcy. I think Dustin diamond grew up to be very goodlooking. It's too bad he couldn't get different roles.
Great video! Just some additional info: Joey Lawrence “landed his breakthrough role in 1983 when he was cast to play Joey Donovan in the popular American sitcom 'Gimme a Break!' He played the role from 1983 to ...”. Sorry, I didn’t open the link.
The show starred Nell Carter and her beautiful but underused singing voice (I think there was something in her contract limiting how much she could sing, maybe because she was focusing on her comedic acting for this project?). I’m pretty sure that success led to Joey landing his role in Blossom, as he and his little brother were very well known for their extreme cuteness (aka bowl cuts + perkiness). Joey was just aging out of the kiddy talent pool, and the new role coincided perfectly with his tween idol persona that ‘evolved’ just in time to be perfect for the part he found… in his hair. Yep, I’m old now. I get to do all the dad jokes I want. 😄
So what is the most common denominator? ...children??? PARENTS!!!
There’s a few child actors who managed to dodge the bullet. I was just rewatching Interview With A Vampire. Kirsten Dunst has that combination of luck and talent that has kept her working steadily while avoiding any huge scandals. Yes, she’s had her share of professional and personal ups and downs, but nothing to really keep her from sinking.

California has a law called Coogan's Law, based after Jackie Coogan (yes, the Addams Family, Jackie Coogan) after his parents spent all his money that says that a child's salary must be put into a trust fund until he or she turns 18. You would think that other states would adopt that law and put it into their own constitution.
The current version of the law is codified in sections 6750-53 of the California Family Code and section 1700.37 of the California Labor Code, not the state's constitution. This law requires a child actor's employer to set aside 15% of the earnings in a trust (often called a Coogan Account), and codifies issues such as schooling, work hours, and time off. At present, Coogan Accounts (a.k.a Blocked Trust Accounts and Trust Accounts) are required by the State of California, New York, Illinois, Louisiana and New Mexico.

That’s so crazy about Leif Garret. That one shocked me.
Opie Cuningham's parents actually managed to raise him fairly decently.
And his brother Clint.
Ron howard grew up to be a well adjusted adult.
God I’m so old I remember Joey from Gimme a break.. hello?

How do they say that thing. First comes the rape and thievery and then it really get bad. They say if you work in this industry you will be required to sleep with somebody.
Omfg. I have lived under a rock. How did I not know about Dustin Diamonds passing. It was literally like 5mths ago. That’s so sad
Some of them treated life like an orange, willing to squeeze the last drop out no matter what.

Greed costs a lot of money
i highly doubt Aaron Carter made 100 mil. In his mind maybe.
Will Smith was almost on this list. Thanks to Quincy Jones who saved his career with the fresh prince of bell air.
Yes, but Will Smith is just another parent/star that has succeeded in having a first class dysfunctional family life that spits out dysfunctional offspring. 🙄
@@jbass69goat84 His wife Jada screwed their son's friend ffs 😑
@@RogueReplicant.......Yes Sir! Just a small part of the bigger picture behind my " dysfunctional family and offspring " comment.
It's nice to noted at a young age, but spending what your receiving is most important. Very show TV shows seem to live forever & u cannot buy Windsor Castle & still cannot live
"The Life Of Riley forever." & 2B in debt with the IRS is the worst, ask Al Capone.
You forgot Dana Plato.
Yes
I'm glad at least Willie Aames has found some solace and turned his life around. Heartbreaking stories. I saw a reality documentary on n which Aames participated in in which he had to sell off just about everything he owned, tried a number of jobs/potential careers before ironically becoming a successful financial planner in the Midwest with the help and support of good people, then was able to re-connect with his family, God Bless him.
Let's be honest ....all most all of these former "stars" have one thing in common- a Blame Game. Grow up, take some personal responsibility and act like an Adult!!
Gary Coleman worked as a security guard? That’s hilarious!!! 🤣
Who in the heck would hire Gary Coleman as a security guard? Was he guarding barbie's townhouse 😂? From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Is wasn’t Arnold Drummond it was JACKSON
