Amazing performance, many thanks for uploading, for me the 2 golden era's of T.Dream was 1st with P. Baumann early to mid '70's & the 2nd GoldenEra with J. Schmoelling from late '79 to early '85 ;-D
Classic - 99 percent of the music listeners are really missing out. We are the fortunate ones, who listen to, hear, and appreciate Tangerine Dream's best music.

I was always impressed by their seamless transitions from one song to the next one. I bought my first record (Tangram) in 1980 and have been a fan since then. In my opinion the Froese, Franke, Schmoelling era was their by far strongest time.
Yes, Johannes Schmoelling brought a lot of new impulses and musical ideas with him, which also changed TD's music in a very positive way compared to the seventies. The year 1980 was particularly strong in my eyes. With the concert in the then “Palast der Republik”, the film music “Thief” and the 1980 fall tour, there were some very strong pieces. I mean improvised long versions of Silver Scale, Choronzon, Calymba Caly, Kiev Mission, Undulation and Force Majeure with The Price and so on were played. Even before the release of the LP “Exit” in 1981, not to mention the many film scores. The three of them, Franke, Froese and Schmoelling, were probably the best Tangerine Dream line-up. But I also liked the music of the short period Franke, Froese and Haslinger and the accompanying European and US tour in 1986.
Any chance to hear something from Force Majeure is a real treat. The rest is nice but...Force Majeure is TD's best album which curiously, included neither Baumann or Schmoelling, who I regard as icons of the era. It was the unexpected "bridge" between the more popular ages they were progressing into. It still moves me to this day.
I have been a Tangerine Dream fan since 1974 when I was 16 years old. It's great to see video from this period of TD history and feel that this was the best ever line up. Thanks for posting.
A rather good version of 'Thermal Inversion' starting at 17.50. Hoping that Thorsten manages to revitalise and work this brilliant piece once again into a future TD gig. :)
Yes mainly from the LP Exit. Force Majeure extract associated with The Price, played with the instruments from the period. Everything sounds very good, but unfortunately the guy who made the recordings, intentionally or whatever the music with the image has not syncronized properly. Also, the video effects I find disturbing, in addition to the unfortunately existing image and sound dropouts. But I can tell you this video material is very rare, believe me.
@@theodorrand I agree, extremely rare and most of their older videos appear to be damaged. I enjoy most of their newer videos and one in particular, a live version of Rubycon (2010) with images of the Giza plateau. Though it must have been removed from RUclips for some reason unfortunately.
Thank You so much for this!!! Finding this video right now is perfect timing because I finally aquired the soundtracks for The Soldier and Strange Behavior after waiting impatiently for 40 years!!! They just were never officially released. Thanks again!
Hello! There are several reasons why I can't comment at the moment, including health issues. That's why my late reply. Yes the film music was written in the same period as the concert. The music of Tangerine Dream at that time is also the one I like the most. Only unfortunately there is little to nothing from TD themselves as official releases from that time.
Kiew Mission...such an underrated beauty. One day i was playing around on guitar and recorded a rough Noti Fawkes (metal) Rendition ....should i upload it?
La aparición del adolescente Jerome en bambalinas ...se nutrió de sus sonidos y que lastima que el no haya podido heredar el nombre y el legado de su padre y alma máter de Tangerine Dream
This is so cool I played this song so many times and was never able to see who was the female behind the vocals...great video. Thanks 😊Back in those days TD was the top electronic group.
The video is unfortunately not suitable to use the female voice at Kiev Mission as an example. Because if you look closely, everything is out of sync, which was probably due to the editing and a lot of post-production by videographer Mike Steiner. But I know what you mean. But I don't know if it was the same woman who was on the Exit LP. Thank you very much for your comment. I can't always reply, at least not right away. TD were certainly the top.
Wonderful concert footage...this age was phenomenal, with this three members ! They always did good tracks, but i agree,it was the high time of TD ! Your video is better than you think,im amazed by its quality...think its from a VHS cassette, which is most complicated to upload fine, and the result of yours is an eyecatcher, anyway, good stuff ! I never saw this before in my life,as a fan it just overwhelms me to see them playing...many thanks for it,my friend ;)
Yes you are right, this video material is from a VHS tape. This cassette is from a guy from Berlin who sold it to me in the nineties. By the way nice to hear that you like it ;-) Did you see the Choronzon video on my channel? It's also from the concert and played as encore.

Hello Paul. Yes I think the short periode 1980 til the end of 1981 was fantastic and inventive music. @@theodorrand Absolutely agree. Loved the groundbreaking albums with Peter Baumann, but the early '80s with JS saw some wonderfully varied music. I also agree about the band post Chris Franke - it seems he was not only the backbone but also the glue. It fell apart after he left.
@@andrewgenner2613 Yes Chris Franke was always in the centre of the stage for instance and called the soul of Tangerine Dream by some longtime fans like the guys who published the book "Voices in the Dunes" in the year 1991 plus the Fan Magazine "Dream Collector". But after Franke has left the band, I think some TD productions are interesting too. The CD "220 Volt Live", "Quinoa" and "The Dream Mixes"-CD's are really good and different in my opinion.
Thanks Theodor for to upload this concert in color and very acceptable quality. I have uploaded it in 2009 with worst quality and black & white, so it is a pleasure to see it in this condition. @@theodorrand Of course in Chile we know Tangerine Dream. Electronic music has many followers in our country. Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, etc. Personally, it is a style that I really like. Greetings
saw them this year at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester England. I was pretty convinced they were miming. The White Eagle stuff was 100% the studio album, note for note and I knew it note for note.
I usually take the truth of any video's audio/video connections from this era with a grain of salt.. maybe because their studio/live work could easily be overdubbed and it isnt always easy to tell... it's the same concept when watching a dj nowadays with all their equipment turning knobs in live videos and changes arent always perceived as synced in the way your brain wants to perceive them.. its merely just a though.. I'm not trying to discredit anything here..
Yes, I'm a certainly a fan (specifically of their 70's material), but.... As for the parts of 'Exit': This is not live, it sounds exactly the same as the album. Regarding the other parts: precorded.
I realized some time after I uploaded the video that the music is different from what was actually played that day. But my video shows what it was like at the concert at the end of August 1981. That means how Froese, Franke and Schmoelling played or pretended to play on stage. I only know that Mike Steiner filmed this event but only the 2nd half of the concert was published. You can see it here. Steiner probably used sound recordings of TD from the studio when editing the video material and not from the concert. That is why the picture and music are not in sync. The video is called THE ALPHA BABOON - CONCERT IN FOUR CYCLES produced by Steiner/Froese. If you know more about the video, please write it in the comments. Thank you.
Here I agree with you. This video is not edited together properly in terms of picture and sound. This is the work of the former video artist Mike Steiner who is now also deceased. He recorded and edited the 2nd half of the 1981 concert and released it under the title "Friedenskonzert" ("Peace Concert") with Edgar Froese. The name of the video ran under the title "THE ALPHA BABOON". The title Choronzon, played as an encore, is played more realistically. I have uploaded this video clip separately.
Theodor this is a real treasure thanks! I am a 39 year old TD fan from Scotland and I never though such videos would exist. I have a question. I would love to watch this in DVD quality. Would you be willing to send or upload the original video? I can pay you for your trouble?
Hello Rob, nice to hear that you like Tangerine Dream and my uploaded videos. The quality you see in the uploaded video on RUclips is not so bad as you think. I mean there is almost no difference between my "original" and the one on my channel. I don't know the origin source of my video VHS tape form the year 1988. I bought my copy in the early ninetees from a guy from Berlin. I've recorded it on a DVD with an external DVD-Recorder more than 10 years ago. The quality was after the transformation on DVD a little bit better than the video tape because of the progressive scan function from the recorder. What you see here on RUclips is the best quality I can offer. The content on my DVD or better said a copy of it, is not for sale. Sorry!
Love all the tracks from this line-up, the best of the band. But most of the music played so-called "live" here is obviously originating from a playback tape, apart from some rare synth solos. It's quite embarrassing to see this woman reciting the lyrics of Kiew Mission with the same intonations as on the album. Not to mention Chris Franke pressing buttons in a totally random way, and Edgar Froese frantically tapping his keyboard without any audible consequences !
This video was created by Mike Steiner, a video artist and friend of Edgar Froese. I think I remember that he also accompanied and filmed the Australian tour in 1982. This Mike Steiner has as you can see the footage of the video heavily edited and thus the sound is probably deliberately not syncron to the video image together. Nevertheless, one should be happy that these rare video documents from the time of Tangerine Dream with the very popular composition Franke, Froese and Schmoelling exist. Even though much of the music was not "live", i.e. every sequence and melody was played by hand there at the concert, it was still a performance which was presented live to an audience on a public stage.
Fantastic...BUT it looks like the only part of this edit in sync is the last 3 seconds. It's utterly baffling trying to figure out what is going on not just here but in other footage from this era. How did the meticulously sequenced TD end up with such obviously random filming & editing?
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I can only tell you that I only have the 2nd half, which is not little, considering how rare the old Tangerine Dream stuff is. I don't think I'm sure though, maybe someone knows more, that only the 2nd half was recorded by the video artist Mike Steiner back then. In other words, unfortunately, there's nothing more from the event. Except the encore "Choronzon" which I uploaded separately.
@@theodorrand thank you for your answer. I am already very happy what is already available for us to enjoy. It just doesn't cost to ask an additional question. Hopefully someday someone may come up with something - never say 'never'! Thanks again for the info.
The track is called Thermal Inversion, which is how it is listed on bootlegs everywhere. This piece was usually part of the concerts from the end of 1980 to 1982.
Great quality of the footage :). I had it some time ago on VHS tape, unfortunately very poor quality. Do you have this material in HD (or at least 720p) format ?
Hello! As I said in the description, the quality is that what you see. Sorry! I've only tried to reduce the noise in the picture, because this footage is from a VHS-tape from a source dated 1988. HD or 720p resolution is impossible I think, because in the eighties there was no such camera available. All videos in 720p or higher are interpolated resolution and not true quality.

The video is called THE ALPHA BABOON - CONCERT IN FOUR CYCLES produced by Steiner/Froese.
If you know more about the video, please write it in the comments. Thank you.
Awesome music. The miming....not so much.
East Berlin?🤔
Sorry!
the beginning sounds like an famous 80s pop hit, but i don't know which one. Does anyone know what i mean?
Do you mean Beat-It by Michael Jackson?
Love it! Is this recording available on CD or LP?
Yes,It's the opening track on the Exit album.
Fantastic...BUT it looks like the only part of this edit in sync is the last 3 seconds. It's utterly baffling trying to figure out what is going on not just here but in other footage from this era. How did the meticulously sequenced TD end up with such obviously random filming & editing?
Fantastic upload - million thanks - btw, what about the first part of the concert? Any chance to upload that as well?
Thanks again for the info.
what is the track name that starts at 17:34 please
The track is called Thermal Inversion, which is how it is listed on bootlegs everywhere. This piece was usually part of the concerts from the end of 1980 to 1982.
thankyou very much @@theodorrand
Great quality of the footage :). I had it some time ago on VHS tape, unfortunately very poor quality. Do you have this material in HD (or at least 720p) format ?
Hello! As I said in the description, the quality is that what you see. Sorry! I've only tried to reduce the noise in the picture, because this footage is from a VHS-tape from a source dated 1988. HD or 720p resolution is impossible I think, because in the eighties there was no such camera available. All videos in 720p or higher are interpolated resolution and not true quality.
War das vor dem Reichstag?
Was it in front of the "Reichstag"?
