  • The question of evil, suffering and brokenness in our world can be a hard one to grapple with. Sometimes, when we're in a place of darkness, the question can arise, "Would it be better if I had never been born?"
Today Fr. Mike tackles these incredibly tough questions and offers some insights into why God created you, and why it is good that you exist.

Plucking random , diverse chapters from an unknown edition of the Bible is not a valid method of critiquing the Church. Countless theologians have debated religion and Christianity over 2000 years, and all bibles ultimately trace back to that of At Jerome which is the basis of the Catholic faith.

@@Call_Upon_YAH You are in factual error on 2 points. First, Catholics do not worship Mary.
Second, Catholics do not have ‘their own’ Bible. The Catholic bishops in the 300’s officially together, guided by the Holy Spirit, determined which ones of all the sacred writings coming down from the time of Jesus were inspired and should be in the canon (list of books) of the Bible. The scriptures at that time were originally written in Hebrew or Greek but then were translated into Latin and later into the other languages of the world. All the Bible’s in other languages, including the KJV, are later translations of the original Catholic Bible.

If you were gone, right the same day, or the next day, that woman would notice exactly your void. Those peers would feel your absence. That means that, somehow, you are part of them. Somehow, right now, you belong.
And it is okay for you to stop belonging someplace to start belonging someplace else. It's okay to change jobs. To take vacations. Just try not to leave those places in which you belong, not just because your physical presence would be missed to the mind of others, but to their hearts. Because several of those people belong because they belong with you. They belong a little more because of you. Your acceptance of them makes them belong.

The first time I ever asked why was when my father died. I was about 34 when he died in the hospital. But he was in the hospital for nearly 27 days before he passed. I could not reconcile why God let him suffer for 27 days, 27 days that gave us hope only to take him home, leaving us devastated. I was actually MAD at God.
It took a while to understand that I will never know God's plan perfectly... and the times that I have had to examine God's plan has occurred on numerous occasions, and I'm nearly 70 now. I call them God Smacks. There are times when it is a daily struggle to recall God's gifts through suffering.

Sometimes people suffer with illness for so long to give them a chance to become more holy. Time to say goodbye to loved ones. Time to reconcile with those they have grievances with. Time for them to confess to a priest. Time for family to say goodbye. Time for them to be closer to God. Suffering on earth can also offset time in purgatory.

I had something similar but I was mad that mine started the process without warning suddenly. For me, God reminded me that it would have hurt either way. Also, from His perspective, my dad wasn't dead. He just moved locations in God's everlasting story. I asked God to pass on messages to my dad after that. I felt that as long as the message was something positive that would make him happy in heaven God would do it for me. I'm at peace with my dad's relocation now.

@@Call_Upon_YAH if you are truly a discipline of Christ than you will be adhering to his beatitudes and the other covenants and teachings that he proclaimed in the gospel.
      Namely these are:
      - Putting love for God before all else
      - Loving your neighbor as you would have them love you
      - giving alms to those who are in need
      - reconciling your sins with others and with the church to beg for forgiveness of your sins and to forgive others their sins against you
      - Participation in the eucharist which is given at his churches mass
      - holy orders for those who are to teach or lead those in his church
      - baptism entry into his church
      - anointing of the sick
      - leading a life of humility and humbleness with no attachments to worldly things
      - being obedient to God’s will and not your own when it comes to following him
      - reading scripture and praying
As for the rest of what you said you are truly ignorant of the origin of the bible as there is no Christian bible without the Catholic Church. The Protestant bible is a redacted Catholic bible, an act committed by a mentally ill man who abused his own marriage and led a depraved and perverted life.
KJV is the product of a broken king of England who created his own church because he wanted a divorce and the pope would not grant him one. The king of England is a self proclaimed head of this church and is not in commune with the Holy Spirit or God. So way to champion a man made twisted version of Christianity by a human king.

I don’t disagree that it is possible that there is a justification for why evil is allowed. It doesn’t matter what your definition of evil is the question remains why does god allow it. However I do not see how this fits with the Christian worldview. Father Mike claimed that being unbreakable makes you a robot in capable of being loved and incapable of loving. However, if you believe that people can exist in a meaningful, loving, and free state in heaven where there is no evil, then why couldn’t he make people exist In this manner from the beginning. Do you think that people become mindless robots in heaven?
Additionally there is also evil that is not bound to human free will. For example, animals and our non-human ancestors suffered immensely for millions of years before anything resembling a human came into being. The very mechanisms that God used to bring us into existence and make all are physiological aspects, Are frankly quite barbaric and surprising on and all good God. The very mode of our creation , Evolution, that God used to make us seems to have an extraordinary amount of pain and suffering that is not tied to our free will. How can you explain this evil? Our existence is humans constitutes such a small blink in the face of the existence of life and there is so much other suffering that predates us that should be explained. I wouldn’t say this is a Defeater by any means but it certainly is surprising on the account of classical theism end less surprising on naturalism. I’d be curious to hear your response to this.
Even if evil wasn’t justified I still think it is worth it to exist rather than to not, at least for me. So I wholeheartedly support your conclusion.

Yes! Absolutely yes! This, the problem of existential nihilism, is probably the most pressing problem facing our culture particularly as it relates to youth. Most Catholic commentators are fixated on moral relativism but, underlying that are the more disturbing questions revolving around nihilism especially in light of the fact that so much of existence, both at the level of the individual and that of the species, involves suffering. I was a pretty thoroughgoing nihilist before my conversion and am obviously convinced that The Catholic Church has some really really good answers.

@@MorreHope Nihilism is a kind of radical skepticism which, when it remains confined to philosophy seminars, isn't all bad. But, when it pervades the broader culture and becomes institutionalized in curriculums as "critical thinking" or "critical theory" and taught to lil kids, it can become toxic in the worst way. Fr Mike's question early in the video "Why exist" and the idea that it might be better not to exist implies that we, as a culture, no longer take the 'goodness of existence' for granted. Its different from relativism in so far as relativism still hangs on to some idea of T/truth. Nihilism makes no such claims--it comes in swinging and never stops. Sorry you're feeling unworthy even in a good way. :)

@@maudefalcone4713 Don't feel sorry for me. I like feeling miserable; in a good way. Ha. I am glad you explained this. I encountered people of relativism and that; there was some kind of reasoning going back and forth. Then, on the other hand; there was no reasoning going back and forth with the nihilists that I've encountered. It is a miracle; an expression; that these nihilists come faithfully to hear; and are upset that they can't understand a thing from the Holy Spirit. I didn't give up on the nihilists; even though relativists are on the charts; but I try to use the expression; NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND. I was raised in a cult; a dangerous one too. Though there are others that are obviously cults to the first glance; mine wasn't to why; I pride myself in the good things it offered; that made me a good, abiding citizen; with benefits to help out; someone who is crying and in need. However, unfortunately cults are the rabbit holes that the marginalized fall into. I was born into it; though. I was involved with debating on RUclips. I never owned my own channel. Some ex-member of my cult; would put up a video; and then he would get questioned; by cult members; and I would argue back and forth; NEVER ARRIVING ANY-WHERE; BECAUSE: THEY COULD NOT SEE THE DANGERS OF THE RECENT AND PAST CRIMES; WHERE PEOPLE HAD GONE TO JAIL. IT IS ALWAYS SOMEBODY ELSE'S FAULT. But I had to stop; because: I kept getting triggers of bad memories. They are not relativists. With these cultic people at least; I can go back and forth arguing. The reason why I argued; was to save another child; whom this person; that I argued with; was a pastor of a church; and would hopefully change his denomination; as I did; I became Catholic. On the other hand: In my debates with nihilists in the Catholic posts; of the Catholic channels; I was very surprised at the level of; complete reasoning-shut-down; in such demonic powers. It was my first time; with very highly intelligent people; which I then; erroneously; thought it was relativism; that I was dealing with. BUT YOU EXPLAINED IT EVEN FURTHER. WOW. WHAT AN EYE OPENER.

But all the evil that is happening is making me to be deeply depressed!
A wonderful man in Hollywood Florida was married for a year, trying to provide for his family as an Uber Eats delivery man and he called his wife to say he had one more delivery and then he would be home. Turns out, his last delivery was the cost of his life when the man at the house forced him into the house to rob him, killed him, and dismembered his body, and put it in plastic bags out at the side of the house!
    WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE???
And at this year's Grammy Awards they where worshiping Satan on stage!
    WHAT IS HAPPENING FATHER?
I can't stand this! I just want to stay in my house and never come out again

When life is relentless, when you feel as if you’ve nothing left in the tank and/or when you feel aimless, both situations can leave you pondering the point of yourself. It can feel too “big” to ponder the point of the world. We travel, journey within it. As much a conversation as an answer. Thank you for this.

I think what someone is saying when they express that it is better never to have existed is that non-existence is preferable to eternal pain. Sure, I don't think anyone would take non-existence over indescribable, eternal joy. And yes people grow tired from living and trying to live righteously. It is difficult even in good times, but we are living in especially evil times. We are world weary. Add to this weariness a real possibility that one sin or disposition or whatever will keep us from enjoying the Beatific Vision and condemn us to an eternity of despair, regret, loneliness and hatred. Yeah, I'd rather not exist than experience that. If I don't exist, I would never know the joy but neither the pain. In fact, I wouldn't know anything.
