  • If you've got a question for Fr. Josh, comment below with #AskFrJosh or share a Glory Story of how God has worked in your life with #GloryStory. Your question or story may be featured in the next video!
Today, Fr. Josh tackles the question, "What does it mean to suffer with Christ?" Sometimes we wonder how our suffering can have meaning and purpose. We can be left confused as to why we are struggling, whether with physical sickness or mental illness and how we can offer those difficulties up to God the Father as Christ does on the cross.
Ask Fr. Josh is the question and answer show to help you navigate life when our Catholic Faith doesn’t give an easy “fill-in-the blank” answer. In each video, Father addresses one question from three different perspectives: your relationship with God, your relationship with the Church, and your relationship with others.
For more Fr. Josh, check out his weekly Ask Fr. Josh podcast at ascensionpress.com/askfrjosh.

Thank you Fr. Josh. I have major depression and tried to kill myself once. I was hospitalized, and after I was released, I continued to cut myself because I denied God and believed life was meaningless. It was not til the end of August that I found God and sought help. I just want everyone to know God will lead you in the right direction if you let him. God bless you all.

some months I started taking a cold shower, up to 2 minutes every day without fail; a real must for me.
I discovered it calms me down reducing fear and apprehension. It gives a boost.
I was apprehensive about going into a store and when I got past the checkout I would then give a sigh of relief.
By taking a cold shower each day I walk into a store and take my time; more relaxed.
      It also reduces heart beat
For years I hated brushing my teeth, there was always blood. The past 2 months no blood at all.
There are special breathing exercises that contributes to well being.

I really wish we had a league or society in the church that was comprised of clergy and lay people who are trained therapists. Mental illness is something that one can only make peace with with the help of the Holy Trinity. Taking our Lord God out of the equation of healing mental illness is like taking an engine out of a car and expecting it to run the Indy 500

I have suffered with mental health issues for about 25 years. I converted to Catholicism about 5 years ago but had been asking lately if it was something God could help with. Leaving church on 24th Oct I found myself feeling lighter and had a very strong sense that my ruminations would be taken from me and have since felt great relief from my previous issues. When I got home I saw a sermon online about St Raphael the Archangel. My baptismal name is Raphael (‘healed by God’) and 24th Oct was his old feast day so I feel like he interceded for me. I would encourage others to ask God for help in mental health issues (and tough times in life generally especially if you have bitten off more than you can chew!) and be open to unexpected ways he can help carry the burden or perhaps even lift you out of it. Trust God #GloryStory

Thank you so much Fr Josh for allowing the Holy Spirit to reach me through your words! God is so good! I stopped taking medications, thinking they were a lack of trust and just suffering, trying so hard to carry this cross of depression myself - well, now I know it is okay to reach out for help, that God wants me to stop suffering and has given me a good doctor who I should listen to, because God gave us doctors, too, and often chooses to heal through other people. This is beautiful and humbling. God bless you Fr Josh!

I never considered Jesus being stripped naked as a form of sexual abuse. I wonder why I was more focused on the physical beatings. The goal was to humiliate him. It is strange that people even spit on him. Humans can be so cruel.

#GloryStory Aged forty I turned my life around and tried to reject all y sinful ways, so I returned to church and sought spiritual mentors. During an Easter vigil at an Orthodox monastery in Belgium, while we were adoring the icon of Christ, I became overwhelmed by grief and wept harder than I have ever wept. I was made aware that each of my sins was a stripe upon the body of The Lord, and I repented sincerely. Then I was consumed with blissful peace in my heart for the first time in my life.

#AskFrJosh I deal with anxiety a lot and it affects my nervous system. I really appreciated this video you did. What do you think about the scriptures that say don’t be anxious and don’t be afraid and fear not? Even though we walk this earth and we all experience anxiety to some degree; isn’t God calling us to tap into His power over the anxiety that comes our way? I want to walk in his power to overcome the anxiety that can cripple. I believe Jesus wants us to walk with Him and not be afraid. I speak from experience of a life of fear and worrying. Many have really messed up childhoods that scar us but I want to believe that Jesus can give me power over it. Supernatural power. I love your videos and I am learning a lot that I didn’t know about Catholic beliefs. I am a seeker after truth. Thank you again Father Josh 😇💕🙏.

I needed this. I have bipolar 2, ptsd, anxiety, and multiple physical ailments, both common and super rare. I've been in the mental health system and taking meds since around 10 years old. I recently had to switch antidepressants bc i was in a rough place. I switched, and now im dealing with so many worsening depression symptoms. Im now depressed and afraid because i have little to no medication options left. Yes, I've trialed and failed that many medications. After being a psych ward frequent flyer for roughly a decade, next month marks 5 whole years not being admitted to the hospital for mental health. I am so very scared of going back...
OK, i probably overshared, but it gives a more accurate picture of how much i needed this. Thank you, and God bless.

Hey Samantha scrupulosity is a obsession due to fear and doubt. Such as always trying to be or figure out if your good enough, does god love me, is god merciful ect. I would seek help from a therapist who works with and specialised with obsessive compulsive disorder. This was a obsession of mine also and it can be managed just like other concerns and fears in our life’s.

Thank you so much for this. Your video popped up in my feed. I've never seen a Catholic one about mental illness. It was so thorough and covered every angle. Our son has been mentally ill for 10 years now. It is difficult for him and us with the ups and downs of mania and delusions. And we and he are serious practicing Catholics, so it has been hard to figure out why God allows this. For the last 3 years, he has done as the doctor orders, but the cycles persist. Our son's plans fail. Our son didn't sleep last night again. Before picking him up from the group home to come to our house where he spends a lot of time with us, my husband said he didn't know if he can take this much longer. He's always wanted a comfortable retirement and it is near. I had him watch the video and we realize that our retirement might not be what we had planned on. We have to offer it up to the Lord. My husband realizes this, and we will pray the Psalms more, Psalm 88. Who knows what the Lord is doing. I know he is trying to deal with our lack of patience and faith for sure. I will watch this with my son now.

I remember when ISIS first emerged, they paraded in chains and beheaded those hostages on that beach because they refused to abandon their faith - that SHOOK MY CORE.
That very Sunday, after the Gospel reading, my parish priest adjusted his mic and very calmly asked us; “How many of you would have laid down your head to be chopped off for Jesus?” Instantly, I cried. Because in my head, I heard a voice (which I tried to deny); “You do not possess that kind of courage to suffer or die for Jesus.” Hence; my tears…
I never stopped thinking about that question. And its been what; 20 years? Do I have it now? Will I ever have it?
Sometimes I wonder; when their heads were down (there), that split second before that axe came down, did they see Jesus? If they did, I guess it would have made it easier. If they didn’t, how did they have in them that kind of courage?
I guess I will never stop thinking about that question. Ever.

I never heard the Sirach reading before. Certainly makes me have to think a bit more about my distrust of doctors.
I would still argue that doctors need to not just treat symptoms but help heal the source of the suffering. I think modern medicine is too focused on telling us to pop pills to dull the pain instead of healing the pain. But, is that a problem with them or their training? Need to pray on this more.

so agree with you, my husband might be alive today if the doctors he saw were not so dependant on their "tests" , he had cancer but he tested "negative" yet died of 4 stage cancer... select doctors who are not totally dependant on pharma companies and their tests and drugs....

Thank you, Father, for your loving insights, humor, and holy energy! I agree with everything you say, but I ask you to pray for the mental health system in this country, which is often Godless. (I have a brother who has a mental illness.) Many times, it ends up being all about stuffing people with pills. I could say so much more about it, but ultimately thank you for caring!

Through suffering comes great rewards. We may not understand or see an end but God has a plan. Through our own free will we make many bad decisions that cause great suffering at our own hands. This choice is not God's true/perfect will for us but he gave us the gift of free will. Under the new covenant with man, God became man to forgive for our sins, that one day we may join him in heaven. That is God's true will for each and everyone of his creations. Even though you may not see an end to your suffering and may not understand, trust in the Holy Trinity, follow Christ to the best of your ability, attend Mass partake in the Eucharist as often as possible. It is our daily bread, not just Sundays bread. Be the best follower of Christ you can be, carry your cross, and there is a good chance that you will be with the Heavenly Father when you leave this Earth or when the end times occur. As a Catholic our call is to Sainthood. Some of the greatest Saints led terrible lives until they opened their hearts to God. Everyday is a new day and God welcomes us with open arms. Look for the good in all of your suffering, God is with you even when you turn your back on him. God bless

I've been worrying over issues that I don't yet have answers to and I just starting playing your Playlist here and I thought oh he sings all the time, songs just come to him, me too, maybe I'll watch more. This video started playing and hearing you talk about how God speaks to you through songs when you ask what the message is made me think...
Well, I've had this song on my mind now and then for the past month maybe from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. It's one of my 2 favourite musicals, along with Les Miserables. Anyway, the song that keeps coming up for me is "Everything's Alright". I was thinking it only a few hours ago and then I saw this video. I'm filled with such joy right now. Thank you!

I have congential fusion of vertebrae in my neck that gives me chronic pain and headaches, and some people very close to me seem to think that it's somehow bad to be dependant on medicine, like I'm an addict or something!! So disheartening to hear and endure and been brought to tears over it more often than I care to count. Thanks for reading this, I can take heart in it!

Hi Fr Josh, thanks for the video today. In the future, could you address on ways to grow in the virtue of humility, because I struggle with resisting to think about myself alot of the time. I understand that every time we sin, it is a form of pride, so we all have some level of pride when we sin. However, what would you recommend to increase in humility and what would you do to avoid dwelling too much on the good things we do?
    God Bless.

I'm no Fr Josh but I just couldn't pass your comment without saying wow, you must really be going through alot. Yet I'm in awe since you are seeking to be closer to Him, in the midst of your suffering. What I understand from what Jesus said to St Faustina there was when you accept suffering you will be close to Him. Acceptance, without necessarily liking or enjoying the pain and suffering would seem like the first stage towards receiving the extraordinary grace of actually seeking and loving suffering like some of the Saints did. Accept your situation as God's will as difficult as that may be and take His Hand and squeeze it tight through the pain. He probably wants to use this difficult time for you to bond with Him on a deeper and more intimate level, since only you and Him truly know the extent of your suffering and only He knows the best way to comfort you. Be real with Him. Complain to Him. Cry to Him when it gets unbearable. Tell Him how much you hate the suffering. But remember Fr Josh's prayer at the end. Not my will but Your Will be done.
'Lord, this hurts so bad and I can't stand it, but I'll trust that Your loving Will will be done in my life'
Hope that provides even a little help.

@@mariaandia3364 Thank you Maria, for your insight and compassion, and reference to St. Faustina on acceptance of God's will for us, despite the suffering that comes with physical, mental, and spiritual pain. Jesus in The garden of Gethsemane, knew well the physical, mental, and even spiritual pain and death He would suffer, and yet accepted the will of the Father. So Jesus knows what we're up against in this life. What an incredible blessing for us to have a God that experienced life in the flesh, and walked on this earth as one of us, yet at the same time, was fully divine.
