  • The spiccato off-the-string bowstroke can be tricky when it comes to finding a balance between flexibility and stability in the arm, wrist, and fingers. In this video we look at how spiccato is related to detache, sautille, and colle - and how understanding this can help us solve the question regarding how much flexibility is really needed. Sometimes too much flexibility can create inconsistency in the sound. It's up to us to continue experimenting and discovering as we develop this bowstroke.

Hello! I am someone who has played violin on and off over 50 years but gave up on spiccato for the most part due to frustration. I appreciate the honesty with which you say we all struggle so enjoy the journey. My fear about spiccato was a bad experience as a teen playing the overture to the Magic Flute as second violin. I was humiliated that I couldn't do what others did so effortlessly. This and you other video give me hope to finally play Sicillienne and Rigaudon by Kriesler.

Thank you. Do you think that it would be helpful to work on detache to make my forearm stronger for spicatto?

Rather than "stronger" listen/get a feel for evenness between upbow and downbow.

Inna, thank you for another excellent video! Your videos are my "go-to" when I am frustrated by my teen son's (whom I teach) questions and arguments. I've sent him several since I discovered them. Sometimes I don't have all the answers or do things more intuitively, and need time to come up with the answer, especially when it is the kind of question you talk about in this video. For his nitpicking, ADHD, and age-driven mind it is not enough. I think he trusts you. Whether he implements the advice or not is another story, but at least he sees that his mom is on point and not imagining things.

@@Violinna Thank you! Waiting for the new videos! Today during the practice my son said, " I was advised to..." And when I asked by whom he said: " By Inna!" !!! Truly G-d sent!
