  • Making small drawer pulls without a lathe is actually quite fun, and easy. The main items you need are a powered drill, some dowels, a beautiful small piece of wood, and preferably some powered sanding equipment like a belt and spindle sander.
    The back story:
I recently needed to make some drawer pulls for a bandsaw box I was making for my wife. Since I didn't have a lathe at the time (Which is not the case any more!), I had to get a little creative with the tools I did have in the shop. The process I tried out worked well, and was really fun!
    Bandsaw Box Design:
The bandsaw box I made is a design by David Picciuto included in his Bandsaw Box Book. If you buy the book, you can download printable templates for free: makesomething.com/product/the... (This isn't a sponsorship and I don't make money from you clicking this link, I just want to give credit where it is due!)

This video just 'pulled' me right in! Ugh... I'm such a 'knob'. Don't worry... I'll get a 'handle' on it. Great video Doug! Outstanding editing quality, as usual.

Thanks Drew! You really like to ‘turn’ a phrase I see, but I’m glad you didn’t ‘drawer’ it out any further.

Doug nice video for those of us that don’t have a lathe or don’t have the desire for one. it seems to be just as quick.

Thanks Bodie! I agree, and it doesn’t depend on sharp lathe chisels/gouges either. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for sharing this. I was looking to make drawer pulls for the very same bandsaw box! Snap! I'll give it a try using some cherry I have.

Fine the small handle. Well done!
This reminds me that I want to make another band saw box as a present.

Thanks Darin! And haha about the shirt. I sometimes get questions about that when I wear it - so I try to explain 😂

Nice video Doug. Like the idea of making items without a ton of expensive tools!

Thanks Steve! I worried about using all the sanders - but I expect more woodworkers have sanders than have lathes, haha.

Great tutorial, Doug. I like the painter's tape on the drill trigger. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to use a clamp in that spot and it doesn't always work well. Great tip - thanks!

Thanks John! I think I tried a clamp first too, haha. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Another fantastic video, Doug! We need more DN Handcrafted videos! ;) I really like how you were able to mimic some lathe operations such as the final sanding, but with a drill instead.

Thanks for watching Bruce! Yeah, I felt like a real turner using sandpaper like that, haha. Also that’s the first time I’ve been called Doub before 😂😂

Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. I love using specialty woods like this - especially in small quantities since it makes it more cost effective.
