I’m glad he said “co-producer” because any other title like “track-maker” is nonsense and you don’t hear that in any other genre. At the very least Kanye should’ve been credited as composer, arranger and/or musician like it was before beat-machine/DAWs were made. I agree and respect most of what D. Dot said but a producer by definition is one who creates a product and the product was a music track. So yeah “co-producer” at the very least. But whatever D. Dot is a legend, respect.
Cap. Kanye was never... EVER, considered an official or unofficial Hitman because he contributed NO TRACKS to any Bad boy artist or production credited to any Hitmen. What track did he supposedly "ghost produced" for to make him any way, shape or form, a Hitman? Stop with the nonsense and pull up the credits whether it's written down or spoke on that says he produced a song uncredited. Give Kanye his flower... but don't take them from someone elses garden.

I worked on many projects as a producer and beatmaker. There IS a difference. Dr. Dre is a great example. Scot Storch will make a beats and then he will go in and add his flair then work with the artist to produce the beat. That's why artist talk about how long he takes to record a song with him b/c he's a producer that's obsessed with perfection. Think of a composer and an orchestra. The orchestra are the beatmakers, they play the instruments and the composer is the producer. He puts it all together. Some people are just good at making beats. Some are just good at producing. Some can do both. I've done both. It's a HUGE difference. A BEATMAKER CANT MAKE HITS OR A HOT SONG. A PRODUCER CAN!! Another example is Quincy Jones. Thriller is the greatest selling album of all time and Quincy Jones is considered one of the greatest producers of all time. He knows how to play instruments himself(orcehstra/beatmaker) but on thriller(and other albums too), he produced the records(composer/producer). If the people he hired to play the instruments did it themselves we both know Thriller wouldn't've never sounded the way it did. Our problem in the hip hop genre is that we are taught false and flat out incorrect information on what is what. Any other genre this is clearly understood. Kanye also did the SAME THING that D.Dot is talking about with HIT-BOY!
5:42 Ye doesn’t hide the fact that Mike Dean works for/with him. Mike Dean is credited on everything, tours and performs live with Ye. So Mike dean isn’t a “ghost producer” I’m low key confused on D Dot point in this whole clip? DJ Tomp did alot of work in graduation and Ye said “Tomp killed this shit” in big brother. He’s honest about who produces what… Gotta see the whole video for more context…
Kanye's name is in the credits for almost all the songs they did together. So he's saying if Mike Dean isn't a "ghost producer" than neither is Kanye. Both get credit for their contribution to the song.
I remember when, he snapped in the booth "WHAT I LOOK LIKE, SOME YOUNG RAP CAT / I'M OVER 30 / B*TCHES BETTER HAVE, MY DOUGH...LIKE OLD DIRTY" #Classic
Hiphop gave a different meaning to producer. That's where all the confusing comes from, constantly. D-dot is absolutely right. When somebody write lyrics, we don't say that person produced the record. you have writers, composers. and a producer. they can overlap, but non of them are the same. Obviously of course. But for some reason in hiphop we don't like the word composer, and also don't like the word beatmaker. So producer it is. When convenient.
If you send a beat to too short, he raps on it then releases it… literally no changes on the beat, nobody in the studio coaching him on what to rap or adlib… are you not the producer? How many stories have we heard of the person funding the project get writer and producer credits for nothing other than putting money up? Js…
It's because of lack of (musical) knowledge and/or vocabulary. It's like how we say "16 BARS". We count a bar as an 8 count when in music that's 2 measures of 4/4 (1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4). So really, if you give it to a trained musician who reads music, it's 32 BARS. In this case, as far as the producer and beat maker, the producer oversees everything. They know and orchestrate what writers to get, musicians/singers to get, what engineers to work with, the proper things to have in the room and they know how to get what they must out of these people to make a proper record...or PRODUCTION. Case in point: Quincy Jones never played drums on his records and didn't write all of the songs, but he's known as what.. ?
Why did esco not release so many classic songs, literally his unreleased songs are better than his albums lol, high is a jam and no 1 heard it outside of a few mixtape heads in ny

I feel like the beat maker and producer discrepancy is only known within the industry - to the consumers, the person that made the beat is the producer - that’s why we were so flabbergasted when Rick Rubin said he can’t play an instrument but calls himself a producer
Beatmakers are prodcuers..Just say there's levels to production. Trying belittle different talents shows insecurity or hate or the feeling of not being recognized for ones contributions.
Back in the day if you was new to the industry they would not let you produce the song or get a producer credit. Someone would take your beats and put they name on it. That was the way of the industry, you would be lucky to get 2 points on a record.
Dude is trippin. You don’t have to be in the room to be a producer. You just have to contribute to the song. That’s why he eventually said Kanye co-produced the record. FOH cut it out D Dot
99% of rappers produce themselves, this is not Pop or RnB. Dont fall for the game. In hip hop we care about who produced the beat not who pressed record and said "I like that." 2 Pac said it best."Daz produces the beat, then Dre comes along and turn a few knobs and get all the credit."
it sounds convincing but i call bs on one part ...the label still has to clear and add info on all tracks ,pretty sure they called someone to find out the name of D. dot publishing company so theyy can add it to the credits/booklet but i fully agree on the beatmaker ,producer argument
I hate when these thief’s try to justify their crookedness with the whole “I’m a producer, they’re a beat maker” spiel. Poppa Was a Playa which D-Dot stole the credits for is a straight sample. What the hell did he “produce”? Kanye enlisting Timbaland to redo the drums on “Stronger” is an example of someone actually producing, not this crap that this guy is pushing.
Producers with the industry definition bs. It’s easy to manipulate because people follow the money. On some underground ish, if you make a fire beat and have someone rhyme on it, people will rock with the raw demo if that beat slaps and them rhymes are fire. The producer’s job is to polish the sound for commercial purposes but let’s be clear the streets will eat them demos. Plus- You have NOTHING to produce without the beat. Engineers are robbing Beatmakers by saying they are the producer.
Dilla Dounts sold off instrumentals ! So you work on beats ? Send it to someone that's a "Production Company " ? And since your not there or have a name ? You get no credit? Or the Actual Record ? The Record Company is a Maze!😂😂

As much of a fan as u and i are dilla catalog aint fuckin wit his. Not even off a the records he produced for other ppl.
There are subtleties between beat making and producing HOWEVER, a lot of what happens is just industry tatics. Middlemen make sure to place themselves between new producers and the artists. Giving an artist some else's beat isn't producing either. It's funny because Kanye has done to lesser know producers as well. Go listen to the BBHMM demo that Bibi and Deputy sent Rihanna. Kanye did almost nothing to the beat and got half the producer points. Deputy stated he was never allowed or asked to come to the studio.
Without the beat, there is no record. The beat is what inspires the writer’s words for the track. More often than not, most of the “producers” don’t do anything but slap their tag on the beat… and credits. Then try to downplay the “beat maker”. Smdh
😂 I feel you but thats not how that works. The beat is essentially a rough sketch/idea. The producer fleshes out the record. That same beat could of been overdubbed a million times all kinds of sounds replaced, shit added , stacked, and arranged. The producer also does the same with the vocals and with the artist during the recording process. Which is the work he was talkn about. after all that shit, he still has to make sure the mix is where it need to be and the direction for the record is not lost. D Dot has the right to feel how he feel about that situation. Cuz after all that he has to SUBMIT the record wit his reputation behind it. Thats after he approves that its finished. Thats y niggas hate Dr. Dre 😂. Because if it flop they not lookn for the co producer they lookn for the D DOT .
@@knix2for5 nailed it. The "producer" wears a lot of hats. beatmakers can be Producers too but it's not always the case. I know a lot of beatmakers that can't produce for shit and vice versa. But as you saw on the documentary Kanye had to fight to get the deal. Why wouldnt D-dot sign him as a rapper? You can never ever deny Ye's talent and contribution. ever. My question to the critics.. what you have contributed???
A “Chicago Rapper”. And who cares if this unknown was signed to Columbia?
The artist's name is Grav and the album is called "Down To Earth" (dropped in 96)
Album is Fuego!!
I think Kanye did the beat for between 6-8 of the tracks on the album. It's actually available on RUclips Music
In all actuality you just proved his point. No disrespect.
Everything happens for a reason look where he’s at now
Also Foxy Brown “My Life” on her 1999 album, Goodie Mob “Rebuilding” in 1999, Trina & Tamara “Jodine” in 1999, Made Men feat. Big Pun and Mase “Is It You (Deja Vu) remix in 1998, Harlem World “You Made Me” in 1999.

I co produced or beat made on that one 🤷🏾♂️doesn’t matter to me but I was involved. Good end product.
Wow..that was my favorite song on that album🎥💪🏽

You know the funny thing is that D-Dot is a true O.G. and legendary producer in the game and the crazy thing is that a lot of people don't know who he is but everybody know Kanye and this is not to take nothing away from D-Dot but the stars was aligned for Kanye to take off into the stratosphere and that he did D-Dot is like the proud teacher/master and Kanye was his humble student/protege respectfully!!🙏🏾💪🏾✊🏾👍🏾👑💯

That verse at the end is tough! They say I'm big and loud... 😮😮😮😮
Beat making is producing, now engineering is another level as well. If you’re programming the drums and programming the ASR or TRITON that’s producing. When it comes to levels and mix down that’s engineering.
Kanye was unofficial member of the hitmen a lot of people don’t know that d dot mase nas need they flowers cause they put on an early ye
I knew that being from Chicago n by working with him n opening up

Like yo that one album in 1999 with how to rob and ghetto shit like that its coo but for him to say dilla isnt seeing his catalog is insane
Exactly!!!
Kanye's name is in the credits for almost all the songs they did together. So he's saying if Mike Dean isn't a "ghost producer" than neither is Kanye. Both get credit for their contribution to the song.
And d dot is saying he did the same with Kanye, there’s no “ghost” to with of the two
@@13playingwithlifeexactly

Better than a movie
Maan, a masterclass in production from D. Dot would go DUMMY!!!!

I feel like the beat maker and producer discrepancy is only known within the industry - to the consumers, the person that made the beat is the producer - that’s why we were so flabbergasted when Rick Rubin said he can’t play an instrument but calls himself a producer
That was 💯.
Probably one of the BEST interviews ever.

Beatmakers are prodcuers..Just say there's levels to production. Trying belittle different talents shows insecurity or hate or the feeling of not being recognized for ones contributions.
"When do instrumental albums sell by themselves?"
Not even a DOOM stan like that, but the Herbs & Spices series is a big outlier.
Back in the day if you was new to the industry they would not let you produce the
song or get a producer credit. Someone would take your beats and put they name on it.
That was the way of the industry, you would be lucky to get 2 points on a record.

How after allll these yrs of growing up listening to hip hop i never thought of the difference btwn a beat maker & a producer 🤯
He mad 😂
99% of rappers produce themselves, this is not Pop or RnB. Dont fall for the game. In hip hop we care about who produced the beat not who pressed record and said "I like that." 2 Pac said it best."Daz produces the beat, then Dre comes along and turn a few knobs and get all the credit."
it sounds convincing but i call bs on one part ...the label still has to clear and add info on all tracks ,pretty sure they called someone to find out the name of D. dot publishing company so theyy can add it to the credits/booklet
but i fully agree on the beatmaker ,producer argument
I hate when these thief’s try to justify their crookedness with the whole “I’m a producer, they’re a beat maker” spiel. Poppa Was a Playa which D-Dot stole the credits for is a straight sample. What the hell did he “produce”?
Kanye enlisting Timbaland to redo the drums on “Stronger” is an example of someone actually producing, not this crap that this guy is pushing.
If he was just a beat maker then why did you just you use his beats? Why didn’t you just make the records from scratch yourself?
WHY DIDN'T THEY SCARY AZZES AK HIM THAT QUESTION? 😤

Yeezy‼️
Dilla Dounts sold off instrumentals !
So you work on beats ?
Send it to someone that's a "Production Company " ? And since your not there or have a name ? You get no credit? Or the Actual Record ? The Record Company is a Maze!😂😂

The differences are only subtle to beatmakers I promise you
Without the beat, there is no record. The beat is what inspires the writer’s words for the track. More often than not, most of the “producers” don’t do anything but slap their tag on the beat… and credits. Then try to downplay the “beat maker”. Smdh
Man I don’t think folks understand how tedious it is to organize sound like that. This dude trippn.
Kanye's early stuff sonically sounded like ASS but he got away with it cuz he was very skilled and the bones were there. That's where a D. Dot would come in or Jermaine Dupri or shit even Mike Dean. Putting records together is just as hard as making beats!! Love or Hate Puffy but him and D. Dot are legendary producers. Benjamins sounds BIG AS FUCK when it comes on til this day.
@@pizzeo 🎯🎯🎯, this is what ppl have a hard time digesting. I did this shit for yrs the process we talkn about makes CLASSIC records. Not no fly by night shit, Kanye was not the kanye we know today , then. Even if you watch old NOi.d. interviews he say same shit D Dot said about ye. But those guys understand the process n know what it take to produce on that level. Alot cats do music n the comments i can tell but they aint never mess wit a producer on that caliber before. Plus the level of competition is high af. Cuz you also had niggas like just blaze , battle cat , ea ski, dj premiere, rza , pete rock around too.
My thing is, regardless of all that, the Producer puts their name on the credits because they know full well that most of the world will think they made the beat. Most people don't read all the credits. And those that do see producer and equate that with 'they made the beat'.
